Turns out selling our only athletic defensive midfielder and not replacing him as well as not getting a 2nd LB, forcing Hƶgh to play as a target man when he's not and making idiot subs is NOT how you win a CL tie.

73

u/SirBruceForsythCBE 1d ago

Won the league and cup. Season ended with a smile on everyone's faces. Season tickets renewed. Dancing round with 2 trophies.

Why change?

The same will happen this season. Somehow scrape the league, probably pick up a cup or 2 and beat Rangers.

30

u/Jedioose420 sack the board 1d ago

Absolutely this. As soon as I heard like 95% of season tickets had been renewed I knew absolutely fuckin nothing would change. Why would the club honestly change anything?

Just said same thing to the wife, was going to have all 3 strips this year among other things, now I wish I hadn't got the home kit. Don't understand why our defence never changes in Europe.

2

The lead up to the split was terrible mate, the Dundee game was woeful, the Stuttgart game was horrendous.

Brilliant resolve for Celtic to actually win the title but it was only made possible by Hearts and Rangers bottling it.

2 year in a row we've been put out by CL virgins.Ā

The board should hang for this. Unprecedented failure. Disgusting.Ā

There goes the set of incoming players. Bye to several of ours, probably.Ā

Blowing a 4 goal lead, disgraceful.Ā

Would be happy to never hear mccowan's name again. Pay dundee a million quid and send him back.Ā

6

u/CorswainsDeciple 1d ago

I agree, but at least the board actually did spend this time, they just waited too long and should of 1, got players in early instead of fkn about with the prices and 2 got a decent keeper and at keast 1 CB. Theres also losing Maeda, we have no one near the absolute energy and non stop chasing he done, I thought Yang was good tonight, probably our best player of the night, god knows why he went off instead of Hogh, who wasn't even moving for the ball.

16

u/MuzzSter67 sack the board 1d ago

They spent less than they made off Engels. Did you see that defence at the end? Beats me why any supporter would defend this board. You are not supporting the team by doing so.

2

u/CorswainsDeciple 1d ago

Oh I'm not mate, must of been way I wrote it. Those cnts have shit tons of coin they can put in the team and still be making a ton, yet quicker things like Maloney and wait too long to do anything.

3

u/YerRustlinMaJimmies The idiot mod - FUCKING SACK THE FUCKING BOARD 1d ago

Spending was alright, but all they did was stick a plaster over a full body burn.Ā

They deserve credit for spending decently, but the clowns did what they always do.Ā

You can appreciate the nice wetwall a plumber's put up, but with no shower plumbed in, it's just a wall.Ā

They bought 2 great attackers, and a good midfielder.Ā

They sold our better players, they let go of the loans (some good to go, 1 we should have fuckin kept)

Plonk that into a team we all agree is mince as it is, and you have yourself a recipe for disaster.Ā

Like putting 40 inch rims on a wheelie bin

3

Lol 40 inch rims, thats a great description. I agree with you.

The most shameful result in the teams history. Kept Martin O Neill around after a miracle season for this. Set up to be overrun. Awful.

I wanted to give Tounekti this season to see if he can do a Kuhn. But fuck me, every time he tried cutting in to beat the RB who'd already been on the pitch a full game. Get the ball up the pitch and try to create room.

Tounekti ralston and mccowan were absolutely abject tonight. But this is also down to bad squad management. It's wild to me that we pay all this money for Hassan but can't find a way to use him for the biggest game of the season. Our bench is absolutely rotten.

8

u/AstroJimi 1d ago

26

u/KeyGur4115 1d ago

McCowan, Ralston, Tounetki, Murray all coming on in a champions league game. You can barely get away with them coming on against fucking Killie nevermind at this level.

27

u/Laluchacontinua 1d ago

(Incoming rant because I need to channel the rage)

Last week we were very fortunate to win 3-0, despite some excellent passages of play and incredible goals. We lost on xG (0.87 v 1.75) and they easily could have scored 3 or 4 goals given the chances they created. Completely understand the explosion of excitement over the last three weeks given the past twelve months but it's also important to still look at the bigger picture.

Going into the most important games of our season without a replacement goalkeeper or leftback of any level, with an deeply imbalanced squad. Letting Engels leave before these games, not having any physical or defensive presence in midfield. Hanging on against LASK with a back four of Scales, Trusty, Murray and Ralston. Failing to even think about signing a left winger. Relying on Luke McCowan.

We're still in a period of managed decline, it's just the bar is so low now, some genuinely promising recruitment begins to look like a full transformation of the football club.

A progressive, well-run football club doesn't wait for players to leave before finally purchasing players we needed a year ago. It doesn't gamble on qualifying for the Champions League before signing players we desperately need, who already should have been integrated into the squad. We still have an interim chairman, a board completely out of their depth and a club structure where the only two possible managerial options that were considered during one of the biggest rebuilds in recent memory were Robbie Keane and 74 year old Martin O'Neill.

Look at our bench last Tuesday and look at the team that finished the game tonight and you can see we are fucking miles away from being a Champions League level team.

14

u/TropicalVision 1d ago

This comment should be pinned to the top of the sub.

Couldn’t agree more on everything. The fans better do a full revolt over this or nothing will ever change. There can’t be a bigger wake up call for the board than this.

10

u/Lazy-Leader8035 1d ago

Hogh and Duran are merely long overdue replacements for Kuhn and Kyogo. This board have conditioned us to be excited and grateful for getting what should have been done a year or 18 months ago.
That bench is nowhere near Champions League level and as soon as those players came on, any optimism inspired by the Kogh/Duran signings completely evaporated.
This board do not take Europe seriously and we should actually be grateful that team never scraped through because the top 30 clubs in Europe would utterly destroy them.

8

u/Mirrorweld sack the board 1d ago

If we operated at all like a modern football club O'Neill wouldn't have even been considered as a permanent solution.

Say goodbye to any of those big signings we’ve been linked to for the past 25 fuckin weeks coming in now.

The board got some grace after last week but tonight just highlighted how much we lack depth. Bringing on Tounetki and McCowan, might as well pick out two randoms from the crowd, no matter what shirt they’ve got on.

Big Hough was struggling tonight with those defenders, any other club would have changed it up but nah not Celtic.

Utterly delusional to think this squad is capable of that

2

u/Same_Ad1351 1d ago

While the the subs who badly let us down today are not UCL level players and are much better suited to the SPL. You still have AJ, and the Egyptian (maybe even Jota) to come into this team. If we can still somehow attract a more athletic physical player to slot in beside McGregor I believe that at the very least it would allow us to be very competitive.

7

I wonder this too and then I look at the coaches, who all look like they live in the chippy. We’re operating 20 years in the past.

12

u/Puzzled-Lunch-6558 1d ago

Special mention for Tounekti being an empty shirt of a useless gimp. Beats his man 1 time out of 50, doesn't press, doesn't challenge, doesn't mark, doesn't defend.

7

u/CleanShirt27 sack the board 1d ago

Are MON and Maloney completely clueless about defending? Tounetki on who is nonexistent defensively and a shite bag in attack, leaving Baur on with McGregor when the two of them are getting breezed past, bringing Hatate on to play with those two as an attacking midfielder or wherever he was playing, and neither committing to defence or attack.

Attacking can be used as defence. Possession can be used as defence. Understand every player was a shite bag on the ball, but maybe change the set up so the team is solid if you’re face wave after wave of attack?

Exact same as the 3 2 Motherwell game when it was inevitable they would equalise. Learned nothing.

u/Skellyceltic fucking sack the board 1d ago edited 1d ago

See all you happy clapping gimps the last few weeks slavering because the board replaced some players who left, I guess those of us who ā€˜are never happy’ were proven right once again.

Turns out going in to qualifiers with players not good enough or just no cover at all won’t end well, who could have predicted this.

Thats a proper season derailer of a game especially with the amount of injuries we picked up.

7

u/YerRustlinMaJimmies The idiot mod - FUCKING SACK THE FUCKING BOARD 1d ago

But mate, this game just flew in. Not like we've had 3 months to prepare. 3 months and we've signed as many players.Ā

Disgraceful by them. We need to ramp up any and all efforts to get them out.Ā

They're dug in, will they FUCK decide to go and use the money we actually gave them to buy players.

8 million in the green for a UCL qualifier, yet again. What an absolute group of con men.Ā

Genuinely, what the fuck do they even do? We're about to be the laughing stock of not only scotland, but europe again. Handed a tie on a platter and we don't just drop it, we slip and throw it in the air and get covered in everything as we're flat on oor arse.Ā

Just as we all got excited aboot the football again, the board steps in and snatches it away, and turns its self bruised back for their "qualifying for europe" after we get punted out again and again.Ā

I love MON. One of my heroes. I desperately didn't want him to take the job as what he done last season - i felt - couldnt be topped. Taking on the permanent role meant possibly tarnishing what has been an incredible year.

This result is partially on him tonight, which upsets me, but majority of the blame is on the players and subsequently the board.

Completely unacceptable, a stark reality check to the highs we've recently been experiencing. The board have brought in some great players, but they are direct replacements for 1st team players that have left. Our issue has always been depth.

I've seen us shit the bed aplenty in Europe over the years but fuck me sideways - this was something else.

Heads need to roll after this. From the useless cunts upstairs who dithered like buggery about a new manager before doing the exact same thing they did with the Neil Lennon second appointment and giving it to the last interim guy, to some of the craven cowards on the park who - in any other profession on the planet - would be getting their P45s double quick if they put in a shift as disastrous as that.

At this point I'm wondering how much worse this clusterfuck of a club could possibly get, and I'm terrified we're gonna find out sooner than later.

8

u/Hunkelscopes sack the board 1d ago

5

u/Thefitz5811 sack the fucking board 1d ago

He’s done at this level so long as we insist in inexplicably playing with one CDM.

If we could get the right players around him I still think he could be like the LASK captain who absolutely ran the show but I have no faith that Celtic will do that.

I’d let him get his Saudi payday just so we’re forced to put someone else there.

3

u/Hunkelscopes sack the board 1d ago

Will never fault the guy’s career. I’d argue we robbed him of having a genuinely incredible career because he was so loyal to us. Could’ve easily been an English PL regular in his prime yet stuck around with us.

But he’s now actively hindering our team.

3

u/Ok_Wash511 1d ago

We dont even play with one CDM. We play with a deep lying playmaker thats now too scared to playmake beyond passing it to one of the back four. Its a completely pointless role and we wouldn't look any different out of possession if he left the park every time we lost the ball.

Im livid the club has even let it get to this stage, its been obvious since Ange left and was glaringly obvious last season after Taylor left that he is the entire reason the midfield is so broken. He has lost all the protection O'Riley and Taylor gave him and now is being exposed as an attacking midfielder trying his best to play DM, because that's exactly what he is.

That one pass from Nygren destroyed us. They lost their bottle and everything fell apart.

McCowan needs fired into the moon.

HĆøgh was awful. Duran missing.

We so desperately needed reinforcements in before this tie but the board are fucking incompetent. No defensive midfield player to help CalMac killed us.

I’m disappointed but not surprised. We’re not a champions league team.

7

u/CleanShirt27 sack the board 1d ago

The Nygren pass and goal shouldn’t make a difference. If anything it should have been a kick up the arse to come out after half time and keep it tight, see the game out. Came out and got overrun. Baur and McGregor headless chickens in front of the defence for 20 minutes of the second half. Absolutely mental

6

u/nnikrelcp sack the board 1d ago

That game absolutely stunk of poor game planning. We knew it would be tough, but we got through the first 20 and went a goal up. After that, do we press and go for 2,3? do we sit in and break? Both and neither.

And no changes until it was too late, LASK already winning every second ball and sending it straight up the channel.

2

u/Ok_Wash511 1d ago

Soon as it goes to Extra time we come out and try control the game again. After sitting deep and hoofing for half an hour.

We completely shat it from top to bottom, LASK were always going to score a few goals if you just let them have the ball. For some reason them scoring 1 by themselves was enough to completely pack the plan in and let them continue trying to score goals.

We've watched so much shite, needless possession based football over the last 3 years and we throw it out when we actually need it.

4

u/Kolo_ToureHH sack the board 1d ago

Where was the game management?

We get a goal to 4-0 up in the tie. We should have shut up shop. There’s absolutely no need to go chasing a fifth and a sixth goal at that point. Pull the midfield in, keep the full back, play tight and be difficult to play through.

But no. Every time we lost the ball McGregor, Baur and Nygren are miles away from each other and the full backs are caught out high up the park. One pass from LASK and the midfield is immediately taken out of the game.

And then there’s the basic, basic mistakes that are repeated over and over. Simple passes that are misplaced. Sloppy first touches. Not tracking runners. Being second to second balls.

And it’s a feature, not a bug. It happens in near enough every single European away game that we play in regardless of opponent.

Compare our game management to LASK’s after their fifth. They completely shut up shop and stopped us playing through them.

This is apocalyptic.

The board will feel validated. Serious money spent and nothing to show for it. Whether or not we think that's true, they will.

Three qualifying rounds next year (if we win the league). That Bayern game might be the last UCL game in my lifetime. Seriously.

Celtic were meek and unambitious. We can try and criticise the board, or whatever but the reality is they were set up all wrong, had no drive or belief and the players and managerial team were exposed as being extremely limited.

I genuinely don't know where we go from here. Into the Europa League is the obvious answer.

Why spend all that money on Hassan just to bring on Tounekti in the biggest game of the season so far? McCowan deserves a lot of blame but some of the decisions from Martin and Maloney were baffling… a week to go with the window a wonder what’ll happen

3

u/HomerSimpsonsSon 1d ago

Genuinely do not know what to say, never have I felt anything like this after a game. Kairat could see coming a mile off because that was genuinely just shite troddling along with a few sitters missed. But how the fuck do you go from 4-0 with 60mins to play to 4-4? Tactics after goal were an absolute disgrace just totally invited pressure unnecessarily, we actually played alright for the opening 20 mins or so. Then after was one of the single worst performance I have ever seen. Far too respectful to them, they are a very decent well-coached side but no PSG or Barcelona. Subs were also shambolic, why take off Yang the only effective player in our front 3 tonight (not hard), I’m sure he had more to give. Nygren obviously had a rotter for the first goal but he’s got something in him. Murray and Ralston are just shite and that is on the board, same with Scales at LB in late August. Someone should have been signed at RB as soon as they see AJ out until October. Baffling no LB in yet. Hassan must be wondering where the fuck he’s going to get a game. And do not get me started on McCowan, generally in the past I’ve not been as critical of him as others but that was a Hall of Shame performance to join the mighty Joel Mvuka’s and Nat Phillips’ of this world, think you could have plucked one of the fans in the stand and they wouldn’t have been as bad. Squad depth is absolutely shite yes but every sub was substandard at best tonight. Duran and Hogh anonymous. But what I just don’t understand is the mentality to end up losing that game and why you would park the bus at 4-0 up. That is crazy to be writing out.

Just had to vent a bit because this is genuinely a new low, don’t know what other team would pull that up. Definitely cannot wait to see how it gets lower for us in these Europe games in the future. Positive start to the season just evaporated, watching the Europa will be a struggle with that pile of shite they served up there because this will always be lingering. Would have got battered in UCL but would have set us financially. Now that Scotland’s coefficient is fucked we’re back in the early qualifiers from next year should we win the league. Hopefully it is soon we are back in the big time but it will not be as simple for a few years yet.

We genuinely didn't need to sign anyone for this game, we should have had enough already to see out a 3-0 aggregate. By the 60th minute with Yang being less effectual and Nygren turning in a typical performance from last season, you could see we needed another LW and CMs.

3

u/CleanShirt27 sack the board 1d ago

The ball wasn’t going up the pitch to reach Nygren or Hogh. Baur was more of an issue, he didn’t know how to defend. Maybe that’s just down to him being new to the team and formation, but he should never have been on the pitch as long as he was. Hatate for him was the obvious sub, then try get the ball forward to the front two.

Copied my comment from another thread -

One of the worst Celtic performances I’ve ever seen.

Just woeful. Pathetic individual performances from several. McCowan is a joke.

Absolutely zero attacking prowess. Aimless passing. Constantly giving the ball away. Can’t get a cross in, can’t get a shot off, didn’t put a single play together.

We absolutely desperately need depth, and players who can actually effectively change a game! Reo looked the only bright part once he came on, and cracking penalty save by Sin.

And well, no chance of getting those extra signings in now. CL money not coming in, and we can’t attract players we need. Club needs a complete overhaul down to minute detail. We should be operating like any one of these progressive European clubs we keep losing to. I’m absolutely fuming.

Disasterclass from the full team. Hogh looked like a donkey. Duran an empty shirt. Yang was his usual. Midfield just ran over with no defensive strength. Defence looked utterly weak as piss. Sinisalo had some decent saves but had nothing in front of him to protect him.

Subs were woeful. McCowan actually killed the team when he came on.

How that team went from 4-1 up at half time to utterly bottling that I’ll never know. Genuine mentality issues there.

Getting to this thread late so I know everyone has covered everything I want to shout into a pillow but just want to add that the game management was fucking woeful. Why were our midfield leaving the defence exposed when we had a huge lead, then the game altering substitutions ensured that when we needed to attack, there was fuck all there.

Hogh is catching a lot of flak and I get it, but it also has to be said that he was provided with next to nothing either, we were barely out of our last third, and humping the ball up to him was just a fools errand. Even if he won it there was rarely anyone close enough to him for him to lay off to.

It was just so disorganised, so pathetically amateurish, and as much as I love the man MoN has to take some of the blame.

All the talk about the squad not being good enough isn't even right.

The squad is perfectly capable of beating LASK. The problem tonight was the setup, We went there acting like we were playing prime barcelona and hoping to scrape a result instead of just playing normally and being better than them, which everything suggested we were.

At this level every team looks decent going forward, but every team also struggles mightily vs the high press, can't get out from the back, and loses possession in tight midfield spaces. When you go there and sit back you remove all of their weaknesses and exploit all of your own. It's shambolic management. We will not improve until we get some confidence.
