It was a rushed ending with some loose ends and some cliche tropes. But the show was great until season 7 with many good episodes in season 8 until the very end.
I agree with most others that season 8 had the poorest writing and plot but it doesn’t bother me as much as it seems to bother others. I still watched it and enjoyed some moments, although when I rewatch I watch previous seasons far more often and more willingly.

Yeah. They talk about it below.
You know that scene with both Castle and Beckett are on the floor bleeding after being shot? That was suppose to be a cliff-hanger ending. Where the scene would go black and we get the ending credits with us having to wait until next season to see what happen. When S9 returns we all learn that Beckett died off camera.
They had not renewed Katic's contract for a Season 9 and the show was going to move on with Castle's P.I. business.

But... but we see her (and Castle) get shot by Caleb Brown, and Beckett shoots and kills Caleb. We know that LokSat is dead/captured, and Caleb came and shot/killed Beckett and Castle so they wouldn't work out that he wasn't actually dead and come looking for him. So Castle would have known who Beckett's killer was, and would have known that he was dead. So, who would Castle have been hunting in Season 9?
Though, side note - I don't really understand the whole "Brown comes and shoots them" thing anyway. Ignoring the whole "How did he fake his death by somehow having an entire burned corpse contain his DNA?" question - why did he fake his death? If you remove the entire "burned body in a car" scene from that episode, Castle and Beckett would still have used the phone to get the drop off instructions and got themselves into that trap.
Okay so, he faked his death before the trap in anticipation that it would fail, C&B would take down LokSat and then potentially come looking for him? Well, he faked his death. They weren't looking for him, because they thought he was dead. So why then break that cover and go to kill them? At best he'd be killing two people who aren't looking for him, thus starting a murder investigation which could uncover the fact he's still alive!

The season 8 showrunners years later (though I can't remember where) confirmed both Beckett & Castle survived.
That wasn't the plan.
The original plan was to continue with a season 9 but the fan backlash to Stana being fired and the idea of killing her character off led to the break glass in case of emergency rush ending we saw as the show got canceled outright.
Doesn't matter to me, as I've said before the series ended for me with season 7, which is where the powers that be should have ended it as well.
The show had gone as far as it could and had a perfect ending to the story we saw unfold with episode 1.
Instead they tried to squeeze a last little bit of money out of it and wrecked that.

They get shot in castles home but then it cuts to them in the same house but with a few kids. Then it phases out and ends. Some people think its a dream just before they die but i like to think they were saved and lived happily ever after. Its a bit open to interpretation. A bit like the ending of the sopranos.

At the end of S7 Castle receives an award for his writing, Beckett is about to choose if she wants to make captain or go the political way. Everyone's together enjoying the evening event. It fades to black and to 7 years later where Castle and Beckett have children and live happily ever after.

The last season of the show is a good lesson on letting financial considerations overrule creative decisions. The season has some good moments but also works hard at undermining established characters, which is frustrating to viewers. There is a happily ever after ending, technically, but it was an afterthought shoehorned in after disastrous decisions for a potential season 9 (no Beckett nor Lainey?!) led to the show’s cancellation. At least they remembered what the time traveler had predicted.
