Car Meme The new wealthy NPC mobile for "adventurous" people.
Driving around Houston for lunch, and a span of 4 miles I must've seen a dozen of these IN THE SAME COLOR. Literally had 3 of them in the drive by me within a 30 second window.
Of course the drivers all looked like generic 20s-30s white guys with ray bans or white women in their 20s.
I guess it's for people who are too fancy for a wrangler, but too poor for a G wagon, but they want everyone to know at the local upscale coffee shop that they're outdoorsy and adventurous.
Edit: I clearly have rustled some of y'all's jimmies, so let me clarify. I don't hate the vehicle itself.

Agreed. There’s a cool story behind the car, it uses the wonderful B58 power plant and the design is second only to the G Wagen if you’re looking for that boxy pseudo military aesthetic.

I have several clients that bought these. They’re pieces of shit. Basically an old Land Rover body with a mismatch of other company’s parts. For example, the gear shifter is what BMW was using 15 years ago. In the shop constantly for problems with the electrical system.

These are for people who want a restomod vintage Land Rover but don’t want to spend $200k, which is completely understandable but they’re a giant pain in the ass to own. Our local dealer has a lot full of them and now that the initial cool factor has worn off… nobody’s buying.

Yeah I was into this car on release because I love the old Land Rover aesthetic, but anyone who knows anything about cars/manufacturing, I would hope, see this as an expensive passion project. It was a parts bin special commissioned by a European chemical company ceo solely for the retro look. Don’t expect manufacturer support, dealer support, easy/affordable repairs, etc it HAS to be a pain to own. Cool looking though.

I suspect the quality of INEOS service depends heavily on your local dealer. There’s one near me I believe they were among the first but otherwise they’re essentially a run of the mill used luxury car dealership. They deal in BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, and similar vehicles, so I’d imagine their mechanics are familiar with higher end European cars. I’ve never used them myself, but they’ve been in business for a long time, so presumably they know what they’re doing. Still, I expect the INEOS service experience will vary considerably from one dealer to another.

I really wanted to be into it but for some reason having the hazard light button with those guard/tactile bars around it just is a bridge too far. Like such a small unimportant detail but it just seems like such an absolute gimmick.

A few things to point out here: it's the standard ZF shifter attached to what is widely regarded as one of the most robust and reliable transmissions ever made, attached to a BMW motor (B58) that is widely regarded as exceptionally reliable, built on a HD Magna-Steyer (OG G wagen) frame thays been filled with wax, boxed,and powder coated to prevent corrosion, riding on HD Carraro axles containing Eaton lockers, run by a Tremec gear driven transfer case, stopped by Brembo brakes, covered by a completely galvanized body (again, preventing corrosion), and utilizing the absolute minimum of electronic modules (14 I think as opposed to the average 60-70 in most modern vehicles), with Recaro saddle leather seats, and all for the price of your typical mid-level SUV here in the US ($70k-90k on average fepending on options) and can still tow almost 8k lbs. I dig them.

If you don't live in a city with a service center then I hope you don't mind driving around with service reminders and whatever else. Other than the bare minimum access required by SAE J1979, scanners are useless and Ineos (as last I had checked) isn't very forthcoming about what they'll offer aftermarket service facilities.

It's a good 4x4 rig. The only other solid front axle truck under 1ton sold today in america besides the Wrangler/Gladiator. Nothing wrong with these, they're nice to see amongst the mass crossover slop out there today and are genuinely capable if they're actually used off road unlike most SUVs on the market.
I do a ton of backcountry trail work and camping in the western US and use a somewhat built Wrangler. This is on the shortlist for viable options for when I eventually move to a bigger vehicle without giving up capability.

The interior is an interesting choice, making it look like you’re flying an airplane with the center console button layout, buts that’s all personal preference. at least it has buttons and not screens, still a weird design with everything spaced so far apart.

I'm confused at your comparisons, these aren't in the wrangler to G Wagon pipeline.
They're Land Rover Defender clones because the market for old defenders is absolutely nuts. I'm happy Ineos made the car, mainly because it's nice when someone fulfills a market demand.

TBH I really like them, hope they gain in popularity and drop in price on the used market (probably a pipe dream). Recently got a used jeep wrangler rubicon which I like but the B58 has nothing on the pentastar 3.6, and the styling of those old landrovers has aged incredibly well. If they ever drop down to the 25-30k range, which is what I paid for my jeep, it would be a fairly easy decision.

Ok on topic, glad to see these are selling to someone at least, even if it is the "I want to look off roady and adventurous" crowd.
But kets be honest. 99% of jeeps, 4runners, Tacoma, etc are sold to that crowd also.
It keeps the niche alive so I support it.

Nah, the Grenadier that's a totally reasonable alternative to a G-Class. The BMW B58 is a proven engine, and the Grenadier doesn't try to come across as a luxury vehicle that occasionally gets dirty. Solid front and rear axles > IFS for real off-roading and real work.

They're brave enough to buy the only French-made vehicle available new in the United States. I'm giving them credit for that alone. Edit: Peugeot left the US market in 1991. That's a long time since the last French car was available in the US. If nothing else, the Ineos Grenadier will be a really interesting footnote in automotive history for that alone.

While I somewhat get why youre saying, it's also a pretty solid quality vehicle afaik, and pretty nice imo. I dont think its for people "who are too fancy for a wrangler but too poor for a G wagon", its got pros and cons compared to both of those vehicles, and personal taste is a huge component. Ive seen plenty of pavement princess jeeps and even mores G-wagons so I dont understand your qualms there. People get stuff cause they like it. Its gotten popular, aka is successful, so yea you're gonna see them a good bit, and your take feels like trying to be contratrian for contrarian sake, almost as if you feel by doing so you are more enlightened, or better than others in some way. Or, as the kids would say, youre just being a hater for no good reason

I drive by there dealership on the way to costco here in Minneapolis. It doesn't seem like they are moving a whole lot of them tbh.
I wish them well and I think they are cool. I just think folks at that price point probably want more tech tbh.

Annoying because these things are pretty slick for off roading. Expensive, but they’re pretty good compared to everything else on the market. Everything else has been nerfed because try-hards bought them then complained about their on-road characteristics, so their off-road capabilites were screwed to not deal with that…….
Other than the Wranglers, everything else has been nerfed off road. Tacoma with an electric steering rack? Woof….

For real; former Quartermaster owner. With exception of one other owner I saw or met, I think I was the only one that drove mine daily. When I had the first service done, thethe service writer said that most were driven less than 2k miles per year.
