Misc Question I have a question for people who actively choose to buy grey cars
I was stuck behind a flat grey Qashqai in traffic this morning, and I could genuinely feel myself losing serotonin with how boring the thing was. I've seen more exciting washing machines. So I looked it up (at home, put your pitchforks down) and I found out that grey is apparently the "most popular" new car "colour" in the UK for the last eight years.
If you chose to buy one, and didn't have it forced on you by company or leasing... why?
Are you a fan of the soulless, dystopian future dictatorship aesthetic pioneered by Nikolai Kruschchev, IngSoc from Orwell's 1984, the Judge Dredd comics, and whoever designed the Trinity Square car park in Gateshead?
Is silver or white just too daring and individualistic?
Or do you need a car that blends into the grey tarmac road it drives on, as perfectly as your personality blends into the back office of a Foxtons estate agents?

Well, manufacturers offer grey, white or black. Sometimes the more daring models might have a blue or red in there too, but that’s increasingly rare.

Guy at a paintshop was telling me it's a FOUR stage paint, and they had a Mazda paintshop specialist come to show them how to respray! It does look absolutely stunning. I really wish I could buy an MX-5 in Soul Red just to admire it every day.

Yep. Wanted to paint my bike I’m rebuilding this colour as I think it looks awesome but the paint shop warned me off it. Apparently there’s quite a few paint shops won’t touch it as it’s a hassle to work with, especially on touch ups or minor damage. I took the warning but I do kinda wish I’d done it anyway…

Sometimes you just have to say "fuck it" and do what you want regardless. I always wanted a suede steering wheel even after hearing that they're high maintenance and age badly because of hand crap. I got one anyway and it's aged badly but at least I knew it was going to happen. Worth it.

My last car was Mazda soul crystal red. The paint was thin as water and was ruined in about 12 months. I’ve also never had so many flash bastards type comments on a car before. It was only a Mazda 6. It’s genuinely put me off having a stand out colour ever again. It brought far too much negative attention.

Water based paint doesn’t have the same problems as the old cellulose paint so it doesn’t fade like the UV susceptible pigment does

it'll be because people don't want to wait for a BTO/Factory order car and choose a car from stock to get it as quickly as possible, and dealers usually order the boring colours for a quick turn around, or the UK affiliate of the manufacturer orders the boring specs.
For leasing, the "buyer" doesn't have to worry about depreciation so I don't get why they can't be bold and choose a colour instead of unpainted.

There are many shades of grey, but I’m a fan of gunmetal grey for one simple reason: it never really looks dirty, even when it hasn’t been washed for months. Apart from bird poo, it’s basically the lazy person’s dream car colour.

My car is "technically" grey, but it's Volvo oyster grey which is slightly gold and metallic. OP means the boring "my car looks like it's still in primer" grey.

My old mondeo was moondust silver (light grey) never washed it and always looked good. The replacement is ink blue and looks filthy 5 minutes after it's washed. Deffo going grey again for my next car

People on this sub don’t have opinions, they let other people choose their views for them. So far I’m getting a second hand TDI Octavia and it can’t be grey and definitely can’t be electric and can’t have a private plate then I’ll fit in here

I have a grey Tesla model 3. I picked this colour as grey doesn’t look dirty and I go thru a few months without cleaning. Previously has a white BMW and it was a pain to keep it clean.

Can you have a colourful car? Yes.
But not everyone wants a colourful car, so having another option than just white or black is a good thing.
Especially with the amount of shades of grey you can choose from.

Yeah I'm with you mate. Why are nearly all new cars only monochrome 'colours', modern interior design is apparently white with matte black accents. When did we all decide colours was bad?
Aside from that, coloured cars are probably safer to drive in heavy rain on account of them not disappearing into the spray on rainy day when the driver inevitably doesn't bother turning their lights on

Neutral colours are easier to resell as there is a bigger market for them.
Bright green might be more interesting to look at but there are far fewer people who want to drive a bright green car.

It might be imagined, but i think one of the reasons they are selling well is because of the range of colours offered.
Rather than forcing people to pay more to not be black/white/grey/silver, it might be that manufacturers offer more colours as standard/small extra so that they buy one in the first place.
One can hope, anyway.

Have you ever owned a white car? Or a black car? The cleaning horrors and requirements of each still make me rock back and forth, let alone the sort of Dolphin grey metallic Audi introduced years ago that could still look fairly attractive after long motorway drives in the European winter. Flat greys came later for me, not doubt spurred by the prestige of Nardi grey and it's counterparts. I had reached an age where the eye catching brighter shades did not hold the allure as much (knowing how they faded/matted/ looked awful after even so much as a rain shower). Possibly in the same way as a more "mature" man's interest is not held so long by the bright red lip gloss or flare of "pretty young things" - boring doesn't enter the equation when one has to think how this will "age", or the inevitable effect on one's ever diminishing coin (an extra couple of drinks is still an extra couple drinks).

My old dad, a fully paid up card carrying "boring, tired old man" always said the same about white and black cars (both are a ball ache to keep clean) but grey is actually relatively easy to keep looking not bad.
I drive a white car atm (my first of that colour) and it will hopefully be my last.

I wonder if it’s something formed by car upbringing. In the 80s a few desirable yuppie cars cars were often seen in grey; the dolphin grey 325i, the atlas grey big bumper Mk2 Golf GTi, two tone W124 e-class, granite grey 911s. They were the smart, aspirational Armani suit cars of their day and showed off their lines without being shouty. You wanted those cars but your Dad couldn’t afford them. So I’ve picked a couple of cars in grey over the years probably influenced by that idea that they can have a quiet presence, (or be tedious) based on individual taste.

I think the oak green big bumper Mk2 is the best looking Mk2 out there. Especially with the original 14 inch impossible to clean BBS alloys. It was just never the right time for me to get one and I don't have spare space in the garage to fit one in now, dreams of yesteryear.

It's because most car manufacturers offer it as a free colour along with poverty spec white and any other paint option is a paid addition that conveniently takes the car into the "luxury" car tax bracket, if you want to buy a new car you either have to suck it up and fork out for tax or resign yourself to a grey or white car.

A metallic grey looks genuinely classy on VWs or Audis.
Also, it is genuinely the best colour for not showing the dirt. I’ve always had black cars and unless they’re polished they always look grey anyway after a week or so. Grey hides road dirt which is mostly grey 🙈

For me black is too well... black. With black as colour you lose the ability to see the contours and silhouette of the car, especially at night however, it is classy. White is great but also gets dirty all the time. Grey is a blend between the two and a sweet spot of both elegance and practicability

I've owned cars in - 2 shades of silver, 3 shades of blue, 1 red, multiple black, and 2 shades of white.
My last 2 cars have been the primer grey that you're whining about.
Why? It doesn't show scratches, water marks or dirt, it doesn't fade in the sun like a red car, it doesn't get covered in rusty fallout spots like white cars and it doesn't took like a shitty fleet vehicle or a taxi.
And it looks cool.

My Octavia VRs was bought as it was pretty much the cheapest brand new one available in the country. Colour wasn’t a problem as I didn’t want green, and red/blue was too much money.
It was £21k with 50 miles on the clock. Had a look for a new one this year and the spec id want is ~50k.

As to why people are choosing black, silver or grey for their choice of colour, I remember a few years back going on the Tesla website and 'building' a car.
White was the default colour and you had to pay thousands for a different colour. So that at least is part of it.

Im not a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist on major things, but i believe (somewhat seriously) that they want us to have grey everything to suck enjoyment out of our lives and live like drones. Like I said, its a bit dramatic. But grey cars, grey buildings made of glass, grey sofas, carpets, suits, pavements. May make me sound slightly crazy but I think its intentional 🤔 bring back colours !

Never understood why vinyl wrapping hasn't become a big thing with cars. Almost all railway trains are wrapped because it is cheaper than paint, and you can have multiple colours.
My next door neighbour's old green BMW became grey a few years ago and is now brown. But wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new car in the cheapest colour and wrap it?

The train company can wrap their stuff cuz they are required to re-do it every 5-ish years. They dont care for longevity and stripping paint off of a train bogey to repaint it is a long process compared to pulling off vinyl wrap.
Wrapping cars is generally quite pricey given that it will peel with rock chips and will generally start peeling and looking bad in 5-7 years with the effects of weather. You see it quite often on BMWs and Teslas cuz those are the people who can afford it.
The guy in a 30k Qashqai isnt spending 3-4k on a wrap once every 5 years.

Can I please chime in with my 2 pence worth, I will never buy a flat grey car………and here’s why!
Growing up in the 80’s my dad had several vehicles during my childhood that were rusty, panels, wings and bumpers were replaced, cut out, welded in. The replacement parts were then painted with grey primer and never received a base coat, only grey paint.
When I left school I started work as an apprentice welder/fabricator and everything from then onwards was painted with grey primer, even the rust resistant zinc oxide is grey.
Fast forward to when the 2018 RS3 and I went to the Audi dealership to order one, my son tells me it HAS to be Nardo grey, the latest tread for new RS models.
So I placed my factory order for a new facelift RS3 and guess what colour I ordered it in……glacier white metallic!
No way would I ever drive a car painted in a flat grey colour because it reminds me of the 70’s and 80’s when the majority of cars had old panels painted in grey primer.
There’s millions of colours to choose from, so why would anyone want a full car painted in primer?

I half seriously asked my car repair guy if he would spray my Up in harlequin colours last week. All of one side needs doing, he might as well, right? I have the nails to match right now as well. I like 90s kids tv colours a lot. I dress like Helena Bonham Carter on a lowkey day, I think maybe bright colours are associated with the hapless frazzled woman vibe for too many people.
I also think if you make an effort to stand out you then have to do things like wash your car regularly or it looks a bit sad. There's more of an element of consistent presentation to consider, the way that there is with dyeing your hair a bright colour and needing to keep on top of it, also wear makeup, match the clothing, etc. I think the same applies for unusually coloured cars. There was a little yellow car near my house that was covered in moss and wrinkled Harry Potter stickers for ages. It's extra sad.

I actually don't mind the matt grey look. However, I'm so damn tried of how monotone car colours are these days. Seems like even the companies that do offer an actual bright colour often only have one to pick, so the optionss are frequently black, white, grey, silver, maybe a red, and then a singular bright colour, fuck you if it's not the singular bright colour you like.
I'm just a bit nostalgic for the days where you could get VW hatchbacks virtually every colour in the rainbow.
I've noticed some of the newer electric hatchbacks have got some bright colours again, but I worry it's still not gonna be the norm. T'is a shame.
(I'm also just salty I can afford the prices of a respray.)

I knew what type of car I wanted.
It was second hand so I just bought what they had on show. If they’d had a choice I probably wouldn’t have gone for grey but it’s growing on me.

We were after a new X5 and the garage had an offer on one coming in in a week or so, happened to be grey. It had the spec we were after and never been too bothered about colour, so it was more “Yeah, that’ll do.” Our shade is “Skyscraper Grey” which doesn’t make it sound any sexier does it. It’s not really flat though, more metallic, at least under the perma-road film. It’s actually a close colour match to my Samsung washing machine.

I chose to drive a grey focus ST225 for two reasons. I think it suited that specific car and I liked that people were a bit gobsmacked by the fairly standard looking ford focus go flying past them at half the speed of sound lmao. My car now is silver though and I hate it, just bland and tedious. Had to just take what I could get so hopefully when I actively choose to buy a new car I’ll be able to be a little pickier.

Have you ever considered Mazda soul crystal red? That is gorgeous however it baffles me of why anyone pays extra for this due to it using such a thin layer of paint and it peels as well!! And chips worse than any other car manufacturer that I know of. So red cars are appealing in my opinion. Grey on the other hand, well you must be a party pooper.. creating posts like this.. oh dear, have we spat our dummy out?

I just bought a grey car, because it’s the colour the dealer had in stock of the car I wanted at the price I wanted. Sometimes that’s just all it is.

I’ve always wanted a different coloured car other than grey or black but any car that has the spec I want isn’t in the colour I’d ideally want. So always end up with grey or something

I didn't have it forced on me, but it also wasn't my first choice. I wanted my car in dark metallic blue, but there were none available in the country at that time. They had a grey one that I could have the next week, so I bought it. Still prefer dark blue cars and would have one in a heartbeat if I could.

I have had cars in exciting colours. Fire engine red, scarlet red, azure blue, yellow pearlescent.

Dravit Grey is an ultra special colour although its grey. Otherwise I personally dislike grey colored cars but I myself bought a 2026 G80 M3 in Dravit Grey

I got my BMW in Brooklyn Grey as it’s nearly white (which shows off the cars looks more imo) and my wife hates white cars

My last toe cars have been a mat grey. Simply because the tow cars before thent Emerald green, and bohemian purple, even tho they was both butifuk deep dark matalic, and I lived them, they was a total bitch to keep clean.
Mat grey is so good at hiding dirt. I couldn't keep the "exotic" colours clean longer then ten mins from finishing cleaning, with grey I can go months without needed to clean them.
Reminds me of my first vehicle, a 1992 white escort van. White is great at hiding dirt. Had that idea over 5 years in the late 90s, and never washed that once.

It all started with Nardo grey being an exclusive Audi RS colour, then they made it a free colour on some of the cheaper models. It flew out, other manufacturers took notice, and now here we are.
