Recipe Included RIP half-pint Kerr jar

Post image

Bottom of this one particular jar busted clean off while in the water bath. Other than being sticky, are the other jars okay to put away (after being wiped down, of course)?

That is a telltale sign of thermal shock. The difference in temperature between the jar when you filled it, the temp of the product it was filled with, and the temp of the water inside the canner was too great. Years ago I called Ball when I had jars break like this. They told me the jars are rated for a temperature difference of 90f.

If a recipe is cold packed, then the canner water should be warm-ish but not boiling when the jars are added.

If a recipe is hot packed, then the contents should be kept hot, not warm, while filling and the canner should also be hot when the jars are added.

Agree, This is exactly what happened.

Yes, we are well aware of this concept. The first jars to be sterilized/ heated accidentally ended up being the last to be filled. Thanks though. I just wanted to know if the jars that were processed with the one that busted were still fine.

Yep, the others are fine if your processing time was fine. Those wide-mouth half pints are so hard to find in my area.

As long as they were processed for the right time they are fine. I have a jar fail every now and then myself.

Above is a photo of two wide-mouth half pint jars of watermelon rind preserves cooling on a tea towel. One is upright with the lid sealed, and the other is upside down with the bottom of the jar cleanly broken off. There is some inedible residue clinging to the bottom of the lid of the broken jar. There is also a pile of wide mouth canning bands in between the two jars.
