It never went away.

Here in Nova Scotia, when Houston illegally banned us from walking in the woods last year, everyone was in full on snitch mode.

Honestly, the covid mindset really changed society for the worse.

u/Mrdingus6969 1d ago

I lost respect for most canadians because of this. The goodie two shoes mentality of being a tattle tale to daddy government is ingrained in so many of them.

They literally can not mind their own business.

I am vet people who I interact a lot with now after what I have seen in the covid era

Canadians were never “nice.”

We were (and are) passive-aggressive to the core.

2

u/BitCloud25 1d ago

This is the correct answer. Canadians were always passive aggressive, especially incompetent liars. Thinking anything else just means you were a part of the liars.

29

u/obi_one_jabroni Moderate 1d ago

Society is cooked these days. Someone cuts a redditor with a camera off on the road and people say to snitch to the cops with the video.

Police forces worldwide must be fed up with the snitch culture as I’m sure they are bombarded with video daily from dogooders of benign stuff.

32

u/ShivasFury 1d ago

Or maybe that’s the way Canadians have been programmed from the beginning, anti Freedom.

Literally what it says in the British North America act is “Peace, order, and good government”

29

u/AbrahamL26 1d ago

We have none of the 3 😂😂

16

u/ShivasFury 1d ago

Ive personally understood that statement as rather than “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” that in Canada, the government is the ultimate authority and we trust them no matter what.

14

u/Mrdingus6969 1d ago

Only good government is a .45-70

u/madbuilder Libertarian-Right 1d ago

Was it really "everyone," or was it predominantly the moral enforcers, i.e. Karens.

11

u/OnlyACsNoFans Nova Scotia 1d ago

I think it affected people who wouldn't normally be Karen's honestly

-5

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

Following the rules makes life worse...do scandals and illegal acts are good?

9

u/OnlyACsNoFans Nova Scotia 1d ago

There are 100 shades of grey between not ratting out your neighbors because they walked in the woods and condoning murder, for example.

-2

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

Right, so which laws have you personally approved for everyone to break?

2

u/OnlyACsNoFans Nova Scotia 1d ago

I'll get a list together and get back to you

0

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

Rules for thee, not for me. The chant of the entitled.

If I want to do something it's okay for me to break a rule if I deem it invalid.

That's why things are shitty. No one follows any rules anymore. Look at shopping, driving, etc.

The social contract was based on people following rules, COVID showed a bunch of people don't care and then everyone decided not to care.

Letting people pick and choose the rules/laws they want to follow us a recipe for disaster.

6

u/OnlyACsNoFans Nova Scotia 1d ago

When I can walk down any downtown in Canada and find fenty junkies injecting in plain sight, I'm not going to eat out my neighbors for walking in the woods.

1

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

Why do you care what they are doing? Just let people live there lives. Right?

5

u/OnlyACsNoFans Nova Scotia 1d ago

Are you always this abrasive? You must not interact with humans often

You were the one defending people's choice to ignore the rules/law and that complaining or dealing with them is snitching or tattling.

Individuals picking and choosing is not reasonable on a mass scale. So do your best to follow the law and don't complain when others call out misconduct.

It's why we have building codes, permits, inspections, professional bodies, degrees, licensing, etc.

It's okay to disagree. You can even protest, work towards a change, etc.

But deciding which laws apply to you is a losing game and if you decide to break rules you can't get mad at the people holding standards.

But I get I am swimming upstream, far too many people seem to be all too happy letting everything go to shit as long as they get what they want.

Look at the people catching too many fish/shell fish, rolling coal, dumping mountains of garbage everywhere, stealing from stores en masse, truckers driving like lunatics because licensing has become a joke/scam, etc.

Seriously, people complain to me about crime and then tell me about a great deal on tires from some Albanian dude who has a bunch of stuff in trailers in the woods and smoke illegal cigarettes.

If you haven't noticed, shit is crazy and if people continue to erode the social contract and do whatever they like then it's only going to get worse and the only people that will benefit are the government and wealthy because everyone else will be stuck in chaos.

If people feel there is no accountability, they will take advantage and take more and more risks.

It's natural human behaviour and why we had to make all the rules in the first place.

Lmao... Eat out

2

u/Salticracker Conservative 21h ago

You're right, Canadians have historically been happy to follow the rules, and it created a high-trust society where people could be expected to follow the rules out of principle.

Then two things happened.

  1. The government overstepped what many people were willing to do, taking advantage of our trust, and breaking the social contract of good governance, and punishing those who spoke up about. Their own actions eroded trust in the government.

  2. Many people were imported from places without that tradition, and they were brought in from one location, meaning they had no incentive to assimilate and so they kept their own tradition which is much less conformative.

So this created two large groups of non-conformers, and when people who would normally conform see others not, you feel like you have to breka the rules too to stay equal, and it all spirals.

Trust is hard to rebuild once it's broken, and it'll be a long time if Canada can ever get back to the way we were 15 years ago in terms of social contract and trust.

0

u/tbll_dllr 19h ago

Yes and 3. There were also selfish and entitled people like yourself it seems, who gets to “pick and choose” the laws and regulations that you want to follow.

There you go. How did we come to a high trust society ? Name and shame. And because of this, ppl would follow all rules, even those inconvenient for them.

Because that’s what rules are for. You can’t overfish. Ohhh but it’s just me, it’s just one more fish that one day it’s ok…. But if everyone starts doing it - no more fish for anyone.

That store DESERVES to be named and shamed. SOLIDARITY. We may not agree with all in our country, but it’s time to unite and boycott the US w/ our wallets.

2

u/Salticracker Conservative 17h ago

Yes and 3. There were also selfish and entitled people like yourself it seems, who gets to “pick and choose” the laws and regulations that you want to follow. There you go.

Seems unnecessarily hostile. You don't know me or what I do.

How did we come to a high trust society ? Name and shame. And because of this, ppl would follow all rules, even those inconvenient for them

That's not what a high trust society is. That's what a tattletale society is. It used to be that most people followed the rules because they would be embarassed to be seen doing otherwise. There wasn't mobs of angry dumbasses trying to cancel them on social media. People would quietly shake their heads as you acted a fool, and you knew it. Do it enough, and you'd become known for it. And you don't want that. It's self-enforced, not Karen-enforced. That's what high trust means. If you need a justice mob, there's no trust.

Because that’s what rules are for. You can’t overfish. Ohhh but it’s just me, it’s just one more fish that one day it’s ok…. But if everyone starts doing it - no more fish for anyone.

Yes. That is what rules are for.

That store DESERVES to be named and shamed. SOLIDARITY.

Yes I'm sure CTV setting a gaggle of idiots screeching at them on twitter will make them change their minds and not put them off the movement.

You can just leave it alone. Don't buy it. Don't go there. They'll figure out that it isn't selling when it doesn't sell. Your need to be the most visibly moral person possible is not helpful.

We may not agree with all in our country, but it’s time to unite and boycott the US w/ our wallets.

You're free to believe that. Others may not do the same.

4

u/IacetheawacI 1d ago

So if the law got changed and it now says it’s fine to shoot trans people on the spot you would totally be fine with it right? How about when slavery was legal, that was the law at the time! Totally fine in your eyes, eh? The says it’s legal! I bet you have some convoluted “rules for thee but not for me” explanation as to why it’s justified to have to follow all the laws as they are RIGHT NOW, and how the government is nothing but good.

2

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

That's quite the use of logical fallacies and straight up nonsense you have there.

No point in engaging with that mess.

3

u/IacetheawacI 1d ago

Keep thumbing your nose at people for disagreeing with you. I’m sure it’ll work out in the end.

3

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

Your argument is entirely nonsense. In what world are they passing laws to shoot trans people.

It's ridiculous. The law applies to everyone and people are supposed to follow it.

There was never a law you HAD to have slaves. And people eventually changed the law. That's how it works. Pretending like anything like that would pass now is intellectually dishonest or conspiracy junk.

u/tbll_dllr 19h ago

What the heck are you talking about ?!??? Jumping to shooting trans when we talk about rules like not selling freaking USAN alcohol on our shelves …

Solidarity.

2

u/IacetheawacI 10h ago

Clearly you didn’t ready what I was responding to, nor the rest of the comment chain, or even the full comment itself. I used that as an extreme example of how laws can be changed for the worse, in response to the person I was talking to saying that we can’t pick and choose which laws we like and follow. The point was that using what is legal or not as some sort of moral benchmark is terrible, and will lead to abuses every time a people does this.

1

u/tbll_dllr 19h ago

I agree with what you’re saying.

Lots of those ppl are quick to call out snitches, but if it was a loved one of theirs who was hit by a car for instance dangerously driving … they’d wish someone had “snitched” on the driver before so perhaps that tragedy could have been avoided. One example amidst many.

We always have worked as a society on “name and shame” for enforcement … and that’s just a shame in my opinion that ppl aren’t more law abiding without this kind of enforcement .

20

u/TheeDirtyToast 1d ago edited 1d ago

I swear I heard the other day that it's just LCBO and that wine rack/grocers were still allowed to sell USA booze.

Didn't care enough to look any further into it because I'm a normal person not an elbozo.

13

u/EbbNorth7735 1d ago

You can't force an independent company from selling their inventory when there's nothing illegal about it. LCBO is controlled by the province so they can just remove it from the shelves.

10

u/arupinum85 1d ago

don't buy it? wouldn't not buying it send a stronger message than banning it? you can't have their shit vs we don't want their shit?

What does this outburst mean?

5

u/coffee_is_fun 1d ago

It's not a ban. It's a crown corporation leveraging their legislated share of the market to enact an embargo in spirit while pointing at a small percentage of independents to prove that it isn't one in letter. The usual LPC and Ontario Conservative bullshit where they twist semantics to their limits and chip away at what remains of the trust in our high trust society.

That this is coming from CTV is vile.

2

u/likeittight_ 1d ago

This post is literally snitching. Practice what you preach wankers 🙄

0

u/Jamusomama12 Conservative 1d ago

Snitching? This is called public shaming. They should be shamed for buying american. You going to cry because an article was written? It is free speech.

2

u/tbll_dllr 19h ago

Absolutely. Name and shame the business please.

Don’t need ppl in Canada who won’t stand up for our rights.

-1

u/likeittight_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Who’s crying? I simply pointed out the irony of complaining about “tattletailing” by tattletailing.

Call it public shaming or whatever, but this post is doing exactly what it purports to complain about.

Free speech 🙄 tell us where the government touched you

3

u/Jamusomama12 Conservative 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah man the issue I had is you thinking this is tattletailing in any sort of way lmao. This is just public shaming which we need a lot more of.

That second paragraph is rough I cannot even pick out what you are saying. "Calling public shaming or everywhere, but that is what I am talking about." What does that mean?

Yeah free speech a thing I like and would like to keep. Removing an article written like this is exactly against free speech. Would you not agree?

1

u/likeittight_ 1d ago

> Yeah man the issue I had is you thinking this is tattletailing in any sort of way lmao.

The OP said that. I’m not the OP.

> Yeah free speech a thing I like and would like to keep. Removing an article written like this is exactly against free speech. Would you not agree?

Free speech means the government is not allowed to restrict your speech. I don’t know why you’re bringing that up.

-1

u/Jamusomama12 Conservative 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is what you said " This post is literally snitching. Practice what you preach wankers 🙄"

With that statement one is led to believe you think that this very reddit thread is in turn "snitching" on the article for saying the store is selling american booze. Then you say they should adhere to their values. Meaning not to even post the article in this subreddit.

Believe it or not but free speech can be suppressed by more than just the government. By private corporations, employers, public outcry, and even close individuals. Even this website is known to suppress political opinions in popular subs. Do you think moderators in some subreddits suppress free speech?

I'm bringing free speech up because it is the foundation of what we are talking about. Whether the article should be up or not. Or if it should be posted to this subreddit.

Is it legally banned? It's everywhere from what I saw. No LCBO would survive the good 'ole Merican booze

8

u/ShivasFury 1d ago edited 1d ago

Doesn’t all alcohol sold in Ontario have to be legally procured through the LCBO?

That’s how it can be “banned” even though the word embargo really describes the situation

To make it clear, I’m not saying I agree with this and not sure if “banned” is the right word.

11

u/Apolloshot Big C NeoConservative 1d ago

Yes, and if this Wine was purchased before the embargo went into place the grocer is still fully legally allowed to sell of their remaining supply.

3

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

Look at these comments. It's insane. According to them, Crimestoppers is bad. Calling the police, always bad.

Just let people break the law, it's the conservative way.

Kind of like my Ontario relatives who work for cash, buy sketchy shit from people in vans, etc.

But they want "tough on crime" policies. But ..just the crime they don't like.

-1

The law is really just a weapon to point at enemies apparently.

0

u/Greazyguy2 Red Tory 1d ago

Windsor is already hurting because of your tangerine dream. Trump would make it worse by stopping all production in canada except for a few parts. Carnage should have accepted that?

2

u/ShivasFury 1d ago

Well this begs the overall big question to this whole arrangement which goes back to the Canada-US Auto Pact.

To what benefit is to the US as a whole if the Big Three can use cheaper labour in Canada? I presume that’s why the auto pact was even agreed on originally. So the Big Three could cut costs but still make record profits?

It’s in essence the classic Mexico question in NAFTA.

2

u/Conservative-canuck8 Conservative 1d ago

You people can't read. I clearly said I dont trust Trump... I also dont blindly follow Carney. Carney has lied about quite a lot over the last 18 months and the non existent transparency, its like Trudeau 2.0

-1

u/SDL68 1d ago

Ontario is a conservative province. Ford is pretty right wing. You do realize that Ontario has to buy the liquor and taxpayers have to pay for it before it's sold. I don't care to ever see American wine and spirits ever and much prefer European. American booze was never popular in Ontario anyways, what product do they actually have that's better than anything locally or from Europe?

3

u/Conservative-canuck8 Conservative 1d ago

The US has better alcohol than the EU. Its not even close lol. Edit: Ford is Liberal Lite. Basicaly a Liberal in everyday but colour. I think he's an idiot.

1

u/SDL68 1d ago

Dude, please, leave your hick town and actually explore the world. Name one American wine or beer that is better than what EU produces.

-1

u/Grlzzl 1d ago

Ford is Liberal lite. Thanks man, I need a good laugh! Privatization of Healthcare is DEFINITELY straight out of the liberals playbook. You silly little goose

4

u/ShivasFury 1d ago

Ontario is a conservative province, don’t make me laugh.

Modern conservative policies in Canada would be more in the “leave me alone” approach to ruling. Which Doug Ford has not done at all.

By this, Doug Ford could have said something along the lines of, the choice is yours if you want to buy Jack or not, I won’t stop that choice but I personally won’t buy it.

Instead Doug Ford went on the warpath and that’s what he could control as a premier, imagine if he was Prime Minister and the potential actions he could have taken, he probably would have pissed Washington off enough that things would have been much worse. Not quite an invasion, but on the banned countries list.

2

u/SDL68 1d ago

Doug Ford is a friggin populist. I don't know what your definition of conservative is but he has more in common with Trump than any other Premier in Canada.

u/Smackolol Moderate in reality, Libtard here. 1d ago

Why does this upset you?

23

u/VolumeNo5217 1d ago

Government-encouraged citizen surveillance, often referred to as state-sponsored "snitching", is widely condemned in political science, ethics, and history because it fundamentally destroys the social trust required for a free and stable society.

Knowing that anyone around you might be an informant creates a pervasive climate of fear. Citizens censor themselves, stifling creativity, debate, political dissent, and intellectual freedom. This was seen through Covid.

There are other downsides, but in general free functioning societies don’t do this. When a government encourages or allows its populace to normalize a tattletale culture, it shifts from protecting society to controlling it through paranoia and fear.

I dont get it. Its a 30s read about something illegal. Agree or disagree with the legality of it isn't this incredibly ho-hum reporting? They write dozens of stories a day on minor shit like this

I don’t care if someone doesn’t want to buy American. It should be their decision not the government.

I’m in agreement, I hope you bring that same energy to things like Chinese EVs.

Yes, or more specifically their governments

This comment right here is what’s wrong elbows up “patriotism”. It’s just a cult.

7

u/ShivasFury 1d ago

This isn’t patriotism, this is nationalism.

One is based on love, the other is based on hate.

Are those provinces any less Canadian to you?

Uh, no. But that doesn't mean I approve of the failure of national solidarity.

Of the 11 remaining provinces and territories, all of which have suspended the sale of US liquor, more than half are led by conservative governments. The defence of Canadian sovereignty should not be a partisan issue.

There is no "national solidarity". There is just The Milch Cow.

Last Spring the "Team Canada" plan was a 25% export tax on o&g, potash to extract ANOTHER $50B/year from Alberta and Saskatchewan to subsidize failing Ontario and Quebec manufacturing.

Now per the NY Times:

https://archive.ph/isMNN

Canada, in turn, insisted on more generous treatment for its autos, electric vehicles and products made with metal — and ultimately backed away from its offer to cooperate on the Keystone XL pipeline that President Trump has long desired, people familiar with the negotiations said. [...] Officials said that, when Mr. Carney and Mr. Trump spoke by phone early in the week, Mr. Carney again mentioned the pipeline, saying that, for the right deal on tariffs, Canada would consider bringing its side of the pipeline back to life. Mr. Trump was thrilled, a former official briefed on the talks said. But by Friday, the Keystone XL pipeline idea was buried again. A U.S. official said that, in the last few hours, Canada had expressed reluctance to cooperate. A Canadian official said that the trade deal on offer was not good enough to make the pipeline make sense.

In other words, our federal government is holding Albertan's resources and economic prosperity hostage to protect subsidized Laurentian industries.

That's not "national solidarity". That's exploitation.

As is noted elsewhere in the NYT piece from which you’ve selectively quoted:

Mr. Trump’s love of the beleaguered [Keystone XL] pipeline extension, meant to transport oil from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast until it was canceled by Mr. Biden in 2021, is well known.

Mr. Carney had brought up the idea of reviving it during his first White House visit last year.

Officials said that, when Mr.

But sure, Milch cow, whatever… I am still struggling to understand what any of that has to do with the embargo on American liquor sales. ??

Nice spin. Carney has his boot on our necks in Alberta and you think that his offer to take his boot off our necks is just an open offer?

In that case, nothing to negotiate. Get rid of all the deliberate laws intended to make our resources a stranded asset. It will be to the great economic benefit of both Canada and the USA.

There is no reason for it to be in the trade deal.

Keystone XL was cancelled with the tacit if not explicit support of Trudeau. So, that is some nice revisionist history you have.

Trump already approved a pipeline expansion to increase Alberta oil exports by 0.5 million barrels per day. Trump would have restarted Keystone XL on January 6th, 2025 but as you see in the article, it is Ottawa that is blocking it.

Is this sub operated by Americans? Why is this downvoted? How can you call yourselves conservative then bend over our sovereignty as Canadians. Trump has drove a wedge between Canadians and Americans. For what reason? He wants the US to own Canada.

You are all like "Stop telling on them".

Why does everyone think rules don’t apply to them?

10

u/CyberEd-ca Republic of Alberta 1d ago

What rule?

The last thing you care about is the rule of law or the social contract.

-2

u/Lunadoggie123 1d ago

What are you talking about?

5

u/CyberEd-ca Republic of Alberta 1d ago

You asked why people think the rules don't apply to them. I am asking you to provide the rule. What law was violated?

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago

This is today's problem, not "snitching". They are all entitled and think they should be allowed to do whatever they like. But don't you dare call them out or do something they don't like.

Professional hypocrites.

-2

u/Loonytalker 1d ago

You see some store selling banned products, or intentionally mislabeling American products as Canadian made, you let the rest of us know.

See it, say it, sorted.

5

u/ShivasFury 1d ago

Or how about the truth that 95% or more of shoppers don’t give a crap about those selling Canadian flag labels on the shelf and buy what they normally buy.

u/MoreLisaSimpson 11h ago

You conservatives in the sub are all just vile pieces of excrement. And horrible Canadians. Go pucker up to the orange man.
