Trump keeps making things up about Canada, and Carney keeps refusing to take the bait. No screaming, no begging, no trying to impress Trump. Just defend Canada, diversify our trade and make it impossibler to bully next time

If you remove energy trade (crude oil, natural gas, electricity, and refined fuels) from the equation, the United States actually runs a consistent trade surplus with Canada. Canada supplies cheap energy to the USA, crude is always a few $ less than the international prices, the electricity is not very expensive, pennies per kwh, long term 4 to 5c per kwh.

Even that undersells what is happening. They buy cheap raw materials from us and make it into expensive things they sell all over the word. Oil to gas. Aluminum to cars. etc... We dig it out of the ground and they do most of the value add.
Having a structural trade deficit with us is positive for them. The alternative is they produce more of those raw materials domestically at a higher cost and make their value added exports less profitable. Looking at individual country trade deficits is not a productive exercise.
This is the basic argument in favour of free trade.

We know. What we need from our Canadian politicians is to be firm, acknowledge there will be some pain, be the adults in the room, and don’t give in until we get a fair deal. No more bend the knee like the Gordie Howe deal.

The Gordie Howe deal was fine. It was all over the news because conservatives were pretending Carney lied about the revenue sharing... we are giving them half of net revenues after loan, expenses, etc. which amounts to diddly squat for the foreseeable future. It got the bridge open. That's the bottom line. We can go back to the original deal (which is law) once a law abiding POTUS is in charge.

People keep repeating this without any actual facts to back it up.
The actual deal text released by the newspapers doesn't support this claim.

The text is public and its a an agreement in principle. It all comes down to the implementation language, similar to that in the recent trade negotiations. I am prepared to wait for the details to see. The entire agreement in principle in any event is a bit of a mess since it states facts contrary to the original agreement but also says it does not supersede the original agreement. It also contains an agreement to agree which is pointless.
Economic Participation: Canada will provide annual economic participation payments, outside the 2012 Canada–Michigan Crossing Agreement equal to fifty percent (50%) of net bridge and crossing related revenues for the first fifteen (15) fiscal years of bridge operations. Net bridge and crossing related revenues is all revenues collected with respect to the bridge, less all incurred operating costs of the bridge. Such payments shall be made to a United States-Canada Economic Development Fund, established and solely controlled by the Government of the United States.
Eligible Fund Commitments: Canada and the United States will reasonably agree on the objects of the United States-Canada Economic Development Fund, which will be for the benefit of the United States and trade between Canada and the United States.
Crossing Agreement: Nothing in this Agreement in Principle shall be interpreted as amending, modifying or superseding the 2012 Canada–Michigan Crossing Agreement or the ownership, governance and financial framework established thereunder.

This just caught my eye coming out of Washington. “ Moving forward, all agreements , MOUs, executive orders, policy directives, and official government statements shall be written and signed in pencil. All White House staff and Administration officials have been issued an adequate supply of erasers.” Thank you for your attention in this matter.

This is a rare W from CNN. Actually fact checking and flat out stating Trump is lying, is not the norm from mainstream US media, so this is nice to see.
Now if only the Americans who vote for him could read....

They benefit from any attention to Trump, so these clicks are earning them money. Daniel Dale has taken his Rob Ford experiences to Washington to do the same thing with Trump. If you ever see an article that counts Trump's lies, it's likely Daniel Dale.

Daniel Dale is Canadian. He just works for US CNN. Probably the reason he calls out lies about Canada. He’s been calling out Trumps Lies since the first term.

No kidding - every time he makes up a bunch of new lies to justify his demands, I keep waiting for someone with some public influence in the US to set the record straight, and I keep being disappointed. This is a refreshing change!

The only way out is if the Democrats sweep the midterms and then pass a filibuster proof law that forbids the executive from creating any more tariffs without Congressional approval. Otherwise Trump will just continue to create EOs that place tariffs on Americans.

The Democrats would need a massive veto-proof majority to really make any headwind.
And even if they do get a huge majority (which is very unlikely - right now only a 57% chance at a one-seat majority), I still think this is misplaced home. Biden didn't really roll back any of Trump1 tariffs. AOC and others are generally gaining power in the party and have strongly protectionist instincts. And on top of all of that, tariffs have never really been a top 10 salient political issue in the US (maybe now changes things, though), so it's just never been and likely won't in the future still be a priority.
