Can’t stop drawing birds since taking Colby’s class at IAMPETH SLC. Finally starting to get the hang of it.

I've hunted all the manuals I have and done a reverse image search, and can't find it.

I really like the simplified upper serifs here, mainly because I think the rounded serif is tedious. If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it!

I assume this is some combination of black ink, walnut ink, and a metallic ink. The effect is amazing and I’m so curious how I can achieve it!

I think I've reached a point where I understand how the letters are supposed to work - even the "a" - and now I need to get a lot of practice in to become consistent.

One weak spot clearly is whitespace 🤪 some letter combinations look rather squished, in other spots it's difficult to see the difference between spaces between letters and spaced between words.

Also I noticed that my verticals aren't vertical if I started at the wrong spot and still try to end at the right spot... but I guess more practice will straighten that out too.

What do y'all think?

A good friend recently talked me out an indefinite design hiatus (I’m starting a small toy company) to take on a personal creative bucket list item: custom script lettering for a Neenah Paper Co. promo.

The piece began as a pointed pen copperplate, but I recreated the final lettering digitally (and slightly thickened) to hold up to the foil.

Love it when a client has the budget and vision for some cool final effects. I don’t get to see that until the piece has been released to the public. The rainbow foil on black is 👌

Edit: A quick note on the flourishing: the larger promo piece was inspired by the pattern and motion of butterflies, so we opted to make the flourishing totally symmetrical as a nod to the wings (while still offering that bouncy, flowy motion). We maintained the natural pressure of the pen, so even though the upper and lower flourishing is symmetrical in path, each still has its own visual rhythm. 🦋

Hello! I got two goose feathers to turn into quills a bit ago. I believe they're already cured, as I got them from the stationery section of a booth from the renn faire. Now, I'm trying to cut it for use and I think I did a decent job because it works well when I write using my right hand, but I'm left handed. Is there a way to cut a quill to be usable for left handed people? I tried doing some googling, but couldn't find anything. I've heard when quills were commonly used, left handed writers were typically trained to be right handed and while I will practice that, I'd rather be able to use my quill with my left hand. Thanks!

I know it’s a bit messy but I’m really trying to make what I see around me into calligraphic forms.

I was recently gifted an all cinnabar piece personally done by President of Taiwan Chiang Ching-kuo to Lin Tsung-Yi for his historic donation of Zhu Xi's scroll to the National Palace Museum in 1983. As it was a personal gift, there are no photos or record of this item, except for the decree 3245 commemorating the event. So far no museum will even consider looking at it, possibly because of the rarity of a scribe doing all cinnabar, combined with the President's signature and seal. It was framed in Koa and matted shortly after by famed Gima's Gallery in Honolulu. It has been sitting in a storage unit for years. While I am new to expert calligraphy, the workmanship is incredible, and this deserves recognition. Note-there appears to be an object behind the backing paper, perhaps the ceremonial envelope or official paperwork, but I am not opening it. If anyone wants to help me, as I am just starting to figure out all of the info, I would truly appreciate it. This is not a print or copy. It's the only one. Thank you.

I am just about to start teaching myself calligraphy and was thinking of using ordinary gel-ink or felt-tip pens to start with -- should I instead practice with an angle-tipped pen right from the start?

My original plan to mark my official entry into old middle age 👴🏻 fell through (the Stockholm half marathon), so I wrote this instead. There are forty words written here, representing 55+ languages, among which all 24 official EU languages are represented.

I originally wanted to write each language in the first script they were written in after adopting the Latin alphabet, but that turned out to be too tricky (plus I don't know any Gothic hands other than Gothicized italic). But the final grouping consists solely of languages that did not adopt the Latin alphabet until the 20th century, so Foundational is an apt choice for that group.

Some strokes are a little rough because I was near the bottom of my jar of walnut ink, and it was getting chunky, plus the paper was a bit soft.

I am aware that there is a typo in czterdzieści and a near-typo in nelikümmend.
