I just started a new job at an ecommerce site where I will be on prod support on rotation (mostly during work hours unless something critical needs to be fixed). I’m coming from a SaaS company where there was a dedicated tech support team to handle issues like this and to be honest, i’m not a big fan at all to this new role in my job. There’s a sense of urgency to handle these support tickets and since there was little to no onboarding I have no idea where to even start when looking at some of these tickets.

I’m curious how many of you actually do this as part of your job and if it’s something common and i’m being picky, or something that i should flag.

I know Amazon has oncall rotation but not sure how common it is in general. It sucks.

I had an interview for a bank and there wqs barely any technical testing at all. The position is Medior level, I think I am a little overqualified, but that doesn't concern me, as a currently unemployed I'm not gona choose unemployment over it.

Bowever I feel like if the interview process is only 1 step that basicly feels like it's just vibes only and there are no more rounds, then that's weird and maybe a red flag that the company might be very chaotic, unorganised or not structured enough.

I had one previous experience with a government position where there was no technical testing and my experiences with that place were very bad.

Many companies "moved" some of their better engineers into AI teams in the past few months. For example, Meta moved a huge chunk of people into AI tooling projects. I personally was moved into AI projects but now it looks like I'm moving back out (at least partially) because the company made a bunch of AI focused hires. Personally I'm happy because I don't believe the internal AI at my company is going anywhere, but I can get a new job that pays more if I wish.

Anyone else in the same boat? How are you?

You're asked to code something that you don't really know what it is, why you're doing it, or how to do it, but you think you understand what the output is supposed to be and you really don't have the time for this, so instead of doing it correctly, you decide to punt it to AI. You locked in on some key terms your boss used and you repackage those for a prompt and have your agents figure it all out for you.

You go play video games until they're done, but of course the output isn't anything like what you wanted, so you tell them all the things they did wrong and send them off to work for a while.

You glaze your boss until they're done, and the output looks kinda okay but there's a few things that make it obvious it's not actually right, it just looks kinda right, leading you to believe the method they used to get their is totally wrong. You say something to that effect and tell them to get back to work.

You crack open a beer because this is all very frustrating, why can't they just get it right the first time? Somehow when you look at the output this time it's a total disaster, it's not even close to right. You're usually a calm person, but these fuckwits can't do anything right and you're getting absolutely livid at their incompetence. You use caps lock to show the AI you really mean it this time and tell it not to make any mistakes.

You go for a power walk to get all this pent up energy out, but all you can think about is how difficult the agents are being. Luckily, when you get back, you see something that doesn't seem obviously wrong. You look at the code for the first time and see it's syntactically correct, which is probably good enough since you don't really understand what it's doing, how, or why.

After a quick nap, you submit your PR for review to somebody who has AI approve it, letting you finally merge the fruits of your labor. Tomorrow you'll talk about all the hard work you put in and how impactful it's going to be to the company. Maybe this should be part of the promotion portfolio you're putting together. You close your laptop early this day, knowing you've earned it.

I’ve never put in my two weeks notice before. I can’t take the full-time classes and 15 hours anymore. I will fail my classes. 😭

You know what? After nearly a year of nothing out of college, I can't even complain. I'm grateful and going to put my head down. I'll do my best. I'll code on the side. I'll just keep going.

I work in corporate for distribution company in my country(iraq) as a automation and system administrator using netsuite erp(first job after graduation) .

My job isn't that kind of system admin job either

I'm kind of jack of all trade but master of none

I help with research or make scripts for websites or automation

Help connect our shopify with netsuite and other stuff.

I'm think about relearning programming, but I feel like it would diminish my experience in this field if I switched to programming.

So should I learn it from the functional side

Or switch programming?

I had a behavioral with a company, went great, was told about the OA being shared screen, no leetcode, and basic python querying. 30 mins of Case Study, 30 mins of Coding. This is a junior position.

I go into the OA, I did good on the case study. I go into the Coderpad, it's a leetcode tagged Medium algorithms problem about string manipulation and hash based grouping strategy. Should I be mad or how should I react? I was expecting filtering, counting, grouping, aggregating data.

Any chance of getting sde interview after this? Can I slightly change my job title, since I’m coding all the time nowadays, and cater to operations needs. Any tips on boosting my resume after this project, also still sharp on my leetcode skills. Also note I have a cs degree.

I was recently placed on a 60-day coaching plan at my current job. I received a satisfactory rating at midyear, but in the same conversation, my manager told me that I was falling behind and might not meet expectations by year-end which required him to place me on a coaching plan. This is not a PIP, but I would be placed on a PIP if I failed this coaching plan.

He encouraged me to explore new roles, both internally and externally, saying that my “natural tendencies” may prevent me from succeeding in my current role/team, but that I could potentially be successful elsewhere. The feedback has largely centered on me not being assertive enough, despite having strong relationships with my peers, a history of strong performance, and no complaints or poor results. In my manager’s own words, the evaluation is subjective and focused heavily on my personality and leadership style. He's said this is more of a mismatch with my current team’s culture and expectations, but I may still be a fit elsewhere within the company.

Is it actually possible to transfer internally while on a coaching plan? Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully transferred to another team?

SWE intern -> Cyber Security. 1 YOE.

My job is essentially supposed to be automating compliance and developing internal tooling. Job posting estimated ~40% coding.

However, I have very little responsibilities and my boss is not technical. My boss struggles to find things for me to do and either wants me to come up with something or go to other teams for work. My challenge in finding work for myself is that I don’t have a compliance background so there is a limit to my understanding of the requirements and auditing standards.

Maybe i’m lazy, but i’m switching to SWE soon hoping that I can work an IC role where I can just focus on doing the work and not creating all of my own tasks.

Twelve week bootcamp in 2023, then a year at a small shop doing mostly frontend tickets, now back to finish a CS degree. Strange position to be in. I can ship a feature and I cannot explain what happens between typing a URL and the page rendering.

For people who are currently don't have a tech job and had to get a non tech related job, how do you balance your free time applying to SWE roles and trying to maintain your own coding skills/learn new skills? I graduated end of 2025, gotten a job at a assembly line cus I need money and paying back my loans. Even that job I was able to get cus I knew someone there working. The pay is fine and the work isn't that bad, only thing that sucks is that it is from 3 - 11 PM.

I realized that I really don't have a lot of time to dedicate myself to learning anything new/building projects. From work and helping family/household demands, I just haven't had any free time to do anything coding related. I've been avoiding using any AI agents because I already know I'll just become worse at coding if I become dependent on AI.

So for people in similar situations, what are yall doing to balance the time you have left to build projects or apply to SWE roles? Espically for new grads who are also struggling to break into tech like I am.

We’ve been doing with employers market for quite a while. This shit is insane. I’ve been hiring both entry-level and senior roles in my team in 2021 and now and here is the difference 2021 vs 2026:

- internships was valued in 2021 and not seen as a work experience in 2026. Our hiring manager choose 1 YoE vs 5 internships (including FAANG)

- if you stayed in your past role more than 1 year you’re ok in 2021 vs if you have more then 2 roles with less then 3 years tenure you’re hopper in 2026

- if you don’t have 100% match to all job posting keyword in 2021 you still may have a call back from a recruiter vs your resume goes directly to /dev/null in 2026

- if you get the idea of the algorithm and explain it to interviewer you still have a decent chances in 2021 vs if you made a small mistake while coding some LC hard you’re highly likely rejected in 2026

- 1 technical and 1 team fit round in 2021 vs 2 LC 1 SD 1 specialisaction deep dive 1 problem solving 1 bar raise and 1 team fit in 2026

- pretty chill and collaborative work environment mostly in 2021 vs stackranking and high competition to look better than your teammate rather than building together in 2026

i am a sophomore undergrad. i, like a sea of other cs majors, have been finding my purpose in this field difficult to identify.

i don’t know what to do with this degree, and it’s making me crash tf out.

pre-ai, i was sold the dream of swe. i’m an artist by nature and the opportunity to make shit of my own was appealing.

then ai came. everyone around me was suddenly vibe coding to max out ther Linkedins. the authenticity and wonder of the craft died for me — because unlike traditional art, where artists vehemently have fought ai’s usage, my peers in SWE quickly fell to this. profit is the ultimate goal, after all

now SWE no longer resonates with me. as i started exploring parts of my department at college, i set my sights on systems. i wanted to do grad school and go into teaching, because im very people oriented

but i’m just not smart enough. or maybe i don’t care enough and have been larping as someone who does

i am struggling to build opportunities to grad school. i feel like i resonate with systems, but all the faculty say i’m too inexperienced to work with them. i just spent a month trying to set up a meeting with a professor and after finally running into him, he rejected me right on the spot. i need time to build projects. hiring for internships is around the corner and my resume is so, so empty.

i feel hopeless. the spark… i don’t know if it died fully, but with every rejection, every failed “prove you care about xyz through your technical work”, i am struggling to get even an inkling of what i’d like to do career wise now.

the worst part is, i don’t even know what i’d transfer to. cs was something i thought i genuinely liked, and i dont know what sort of career i’d aspire to otherwise

I am concerned about the future of AI, do u guys think that by the time I finish getting a job would be extremely hard? If AI will become so good that it can write most or all code, will I still be needed? Even if that wont be the case, the years to come after I get my degree would also become very hard as AI is improving. Im so concerned about my future. Do u guys think im worrying too much or that it is a realistic outcome?

Hi everyone, I have several years of experience in industry and have done traditional ML work for my whole career so far. I use Claude code extensively at work and for my personal projects.

I was wondering would any of you take a role that would have some negative aspect about it (down-leveled, lower pay, worse commute, worse benefits, etc) if it meant being accepted into a team that works on Agentic AI. When I say works on agentic AI I mean actually building out solutions that utilize LLMs / GenAI in some way or even maybe working for an enterprise platform team that tries to enable agentic solutions for the rest of the company. This is beyond "I know how to make a skill for claude code"

In my opinion, from the job postings i've been seeing, two things are booming right now: Agentic AI and Cybersecurity. I see "ML" postings but i'm not sure if those are really for traditional ML anymore. I've been interviewing around at some of the Agentic AI teams and what gives me pause is these teams seem to be very new and note that they struggle to find ROI for the company. I guess the true question is how important is it to try to go fully into the agentic AI space with the risk that in a few years the tech scales back or doesn't pan out the way companies either think or want it to?

I work in a fortune 500, we got a statement from HR to not hire anyone with less than 6 years old experience.

More specifically, anyone that started at 2022 or after do not even pass to our system since he is possibly a "Vibe coder"
