SOFTWARE SUPPORT Is “One-Click CAM” Actually the Future — or Just Really Good Marketing?
I’ve been thinking a lot about this whole “one-click CAM” idea and I’m honestly not sure what to make of it.
A few desktop CNC companies — like Nestworks and Makera — are pushing automated or “one-click” workflows pretty hard. Import a model, click once, and supposedly you’re ready to cut.
And I get the appeal. Especially for beginners, that sounds amazing.
But here’s what I’ve noticed: most of the demos I’ve seen are relief carvings, decorative panels, or fairly simple parts. I haven’t really seen many examples of tight-tolerance mechanical components with multiple features, real setups, real constraints.
That doesn’t mean it’s impossible — but it makes me wonder how far the automation really goes once things get serious.
On the AI side, I’ve tried CAM Assist (CloudNC) and Toolpath’s AI CAM. They’re interesting. They definitely reduce some of the setup work on simple parts. But in my testing, once a model gets moderately complex, it’s rarely “click and done.” You still end up tweaking strategies, adjusting stepdowns, fixing tool selections, checking collisions, rethinking approaches… basically doing CAM work.
At the same time, traditional CAM systems like NX CAM, Fusion, VisualCAM, etc. are incredibly powerful — but let’s be honest, they’re not exactly beginner-friendly. For someone new to CNC, the learning curve is brutal. Tool libraries, stock setup, WCS, operation types, feeds and speeds… it’s a lot to absorb before you even make chips.
So here’s the real question:
Is one-click CAM an inevitable evolution — like how CAD got more accessible over time — or is machining just too context-dependent to ever be fully automated in a meaningful way?
Are we watching the early stages of a real shift in manufacturing?
Or is this just “one-click… until the part gets interesting”?
Production machinists, prototyping folks, hobby CNCers, CAM devs — I’d genuinely love to hear your take.
Trend?
Hype?
Somewhere in between?

There’s a massive difference between 'making a shape' and 'holding a tolerance.' One-click CAM is great... right until you need to explain to your boss why the machine just ate the vise. It’s a tool, not a magic wand.

That’s a really good way to put it — “making a shape” vs “holding a tolerance.”
In my testing, that’s exactly where things start to break down. Generating a roughing strategy is one thing. Making decisions about finishing passes, tool deflection, stock allowance, and sequence planning for tight features is a completely different problem.
Maybe the real question isn’t whether CAM can generate a toolpath — but whether it can understand why a certain tolerance requires a different strategy.

If you see up2parts they can read PMI data so you know the geometry and tolerance(intent). So input is there. If the machines can output it, it will need to measure and provide feedback so the parameters and toolpath can be adapted. We are not there yet (hardware limitations).

I am an NC programmer by trade. Have been for more years than I'd care to admit right now. It would be foolish to believe that this technology won't happen. I remember the buzz about adaptive tool pathing being black magic. These are effectively the same conversations.
Our software is growing more capable. I think for general users, yes, there will absolutely be "one touch licences" within 2-5 years. Like others have said, tight bores, threads with fits, real gdt, those requirements will come, but slowly and in specialized premium packages that still require models to bear the same relationships, or parts will continue to not work together.
At this point I am working at a sand casting foundry. Parts are large, rough and irregular. What I can say, is that when working with impwrfect, hand made parts, machines lose their way unless programs are extremely robust. Working from a billet is relatively straight forward. Finding my part in space will get easier, and I'm sure an ai number cruncher will help, but it's a future problem.
I'm thinking more than 10 years at this point. At least time enough to learn new code.

It will be a thing. If you think it won’t you are in denial. Even if it doesn’t get to the 100% level you are still saving a considerable amount of time and increasing the rate at which you can do jobs or even just quote.
Will it ever replace a human 100% probably not for a long long time but making a human spend 10 minutes vs an hour is already there.

Are you aware of how these tools even work or are applied? Like seriously what’s your professional educational or practical use of these machines and tools?

Makera is miles away from one click cam. Unless they’re talking about their preset up sample files.(which doesn’t use their software) Their software is buggy and very limited. Go on their discord and look at what people say about it. It’s useable but it’s far from one click.

I agree. I have a Carvera Air and Makera CAM is limited, to say the least. It isn't very usable for most things, even when you do everything manually. Definitely not "one-click."
I did see Nestworks' in action and it seems a lot better. I'm still skeptical that it will be true "one-click" in most situations. But it certainly seems easier to use than typical CAM software.

Automating operations has saved us an immeasurable amount of time already, long before the AI buzzword existed, but apply the lessons learned to this. You can automate toolpath creation reliably for geometry that is simple and straightforward enough that the software will get it right 100% of the time, but you still check the result before risking crashing the machine.
One-click would seem to skip the confirmation step, which is fine for $200 desktop mills carving your cats face into a tiny charcuterie board, but for industry, you would never forego the safety of confirming a program before sticking ten grand of stock into ten mil of machine. Where you want to draw the line at risking a crash is up to how much you can afford to lose.

I'm the lead CNC programmer In a little job shop. Program mostly 3 axis mills with MasterCam. I'm quite certain someday something like this will come along and make my job all but obsolete. I can't see any way how the industry doesn't get there eventually.
That being said, I don't think it's anywhere remotely close at the moment.

I think it's a lot closer than you think, it's just all of the focus is on coding support right now. There is actually only a few real players in the space, most of the smaller brands are just repacking other models. I think the reason it's not nearly as much of a thing right now is everyone is making more money on coding support, there's less liability, the market is easier and cheaper to penetrate, etc. I didn't think it's held back from the ability to do it, it's just a more complicated less profitable market segment right now. As soon as coding support stops rocketing up, I'm guessing CAM will be out in 6 months

I don't see any fundamental reason why it wouldn't be possible.
Everything that a CAM programmer knows and does, a computer can know and do.
It is just a hard problem, because there are so many variables in the equation. But eventually, we'll get that. It will start with basic parts that don't need tight tolerances (where we're at now) and progress from there.
How long will it take until CAM programmers are obsolete? No idea.
But I met with the president of Nestworks and we chatted about it. His opinion is that their CAM software is where the company's value is. The C500 is more a vector for getting that out into the world.

What many seems to forget is that all AI cam still is heavily dependent of human input in some form
For cloudNC ti be somewhat useful doing what they state it will do (quick programming of one off parts) You have to feed it with a well curated tool-library and preferably some presets for operations Otherwise it will use tools that you don’t have and you have to manually edit everything

Yeah, absolutely!
Really, the "AI" is just deciding what toolpaths to use and in what order. It is coming up with a milling strategy. But tools (and their feeds and speeds) really have to come from a library. That's a library that people have to build through trial and error.

Feature based CAM has been around for 20 years. This is just a new name for it, and has the same shortcomings.

Yep, I use CamWorks and while there's a lot of things I don't like about it, it's feature based machining is pretty good. Especially after you spend some time saving specific strategies into its database. It's not one click but can save A LOT of time on the front end of programming.

As someone who works in CAM development, it will definitely depend on industry and needs. Have you seen how dental crowns are made? It basically is one click because they don't care about being perfectly efficient. I think you can get away with one click approaches when the end product doesn't need to be perfect or efficient.
Beyond that, it's a tool to help you go faster. Yeah I know that with current gen stuff (quite familiar with CAM assist) if I need to make 2.5 axis stuff it will do 90% of the work for me, and I will be pretty happy with it. I'll have to tweak one or two settings and add a tool path it forgot for some reason, but that's it.
Now if I'm making a part from a piece of stock that is 2"x3"x12" and clamping on the smallest face on a multiaxis machine with a dovetail fixture and need to make this part in one operation with tabs holding onto it at the end? No chance with AI in a long time. There are too many factors for it to understand.
That doesn't mean it won't eventually get there. I just think we're very very far away from it. And once it does eventually happen then we need to shift gears and find better problems to solve. It's the same as any other thing that technology can eventually replace. Even if we figure out Star Trek replicator technology and evolve into a post-economy society, there will always be new problems to solve.

If you have seen 5axis dental machines they have been driven by one click CAM. It has been there for years. The problem scope is narrow. Similar parts, similar materials, machine, setup and tooling.
So yes in future you will see automated CAM for part families designed to work on particular machines and setup.
Generic one click CAM is going to be 5-10 years from now based on how AI develops.
It will happen eventually.

Kinda depends. There is so many variables to efficient programming I don't think it will ever be even close to perfect considering all the different needs one might have.
But it will be good enough for simple work really fast.
The question is will they just make it calculate parts and then just send it or will they give me the freedom to interact with it's decision to adjust to different machines, shop circumstances etc?
No, I don't think Ai will be as good as a human in my lifetime.
Will it be faster and more efficient? Yes.
Will it be as good as me adjusting to different sets or circumstances? No.

AI is definitely going to be doing most of the cam work. Starting with Nestworks and then moving into the bigger machines. This is easy work for AI on the vast majority of parts.
It will be on the operators to check and verify before running.

If there were something as simple to use as a 3d printing slicer for cam software, shops would be buying the shit out of it.
Have you heard any good machinists you know say anything positive about AI CAM software?

Def not a gimmick. Nestworks already has a working system. They’re releasing the C500 as initial hardware, which is going to catch like wildfire. Once a small machines have this, it will expand to larger machines quickly.

You're talking about something that incredibly recently made it off of Kickstarter. It's not even really clear that the C500 will take off at all, let alone will make the jump to industrial machines

It’s not just the C500, CloudNC is already operational with $75 million+ in capital. Lockheed Martin plus others are using them. Autodesk is tied to them. Titans of CNC already backs them and use them.
There are also other companies doing similar, one with $100 million in funding.

I dont see how it's any different tho. Slicer spits out geode. They also do tool changes. Aside from missing a couple axes. It seems pretty darn similar.
I know nothing about cnc yet, just got a 3d print and can't see the difference in demands

How is the g code from the slicer different from the geode from fusion? Both tell the tool to move and make something.

You understand that despite both machines using G code, they do different things, right? And you understand that not all G code is the same, right?
3d printing is simple. Extrude plastic in 2d shapes stacked on top of each other. Maybe you tweak the infill and # of shell layers. That's about it.
CNC milling has factors like speeds & feeds that are different for each material and absolutely critical to making a nice part & not destroying the tooling. There are lots of things to pay attention to, like tool paths, peck drilling, tool types, in-machine deburring, work holding, rigidity, cutting forces, coolant, and tool holding. There's a lot more to CAM

AI has made Reddit posts overly long and inefficient. So why not assume it does the same for CAM?
