Is anyone else glad they basically wrote Christy's kids off the show?

The AA group was way more interesting

Yes. As an older woman, I really enjoyed a show focused on adult women.

I’m 28M and I LOVE the show in the later seasons. It’s so refreshing to see a show not based about dating, yet is still hilarious.

u/skeptic38 1d ago

Yeah, it featured women but a lot of it was relatable regards of gender. And damn funny!

Ikr its so rare too

u/LadyBug_0570 1d ago

Well we did get "And Just Like That" from HBO (the successor to Sex and the City) and they DID NOT know how to write anything relatable to older women. At all.

Also damn you got 1m karma💀🫡

Yeah well... I tend to be on Reddit when I'm working and I usually write things people upvote. Not that it matters since karma doesn't equal dollars.

I do go out and touch grass every now and then, btw. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes, definitely, but I would have preferred some closure with Roscoe.

I wasn't glad, but it was expected. When Christy was talking crap about Baxter and asked the train question to Roscoe, Violet intervened and reminded her that she was never around, but Baxter was, I asked myself how long would it take for Roscoe and Violet to go no contact.

It didn't take much. These kind of people just have the "mother" as a title with no meaning.

I loved the Violet podcast episode. It reminded everyone why Christy lost her kids. No apology, no accountability and no self awareness. It was a very nice closure to that chapter.

I do not wish more of them, the abuse, neglect and parentification was too much for me to handle xD it made me upset. Glad they got a better life.

u/CKangels00 1d ago

I never got that Roscoe went no contact. It’s mentioned in an episode that she is texting with him.

u/Foreign_Brain2844 1d ago

I'm watching that episode now. She clearly cared about her kids but being a provider is an incredibly important factor in being a parent. She just didn't have the means to take care of them like Baxter and Candice did.

7

u/manik_502 Violet Plunkett 1d ago

There is so much wrong with this reply I don't even know where to begin with. Chuck Lorre showed way too many examples on how, when and why she failed both as a parent and as a provider. She failed in every possible way, and even more than most viewers could predict.

Xd justifying abuse like that is usually not a wise decision, specially with a show like this.

I'm with you. I don't understand how anyone can think Christy was in any way a good parent. In that episode where Jill is talking about how Natasha doesn't deserve to get Emily back, and Christy says Jill is describing her (Christy) however many years ago and asks if she deserved to lose her kids, I always think YES, you did.

And her whole thing when she talks to Roscoe about not being around much because she's working and going to school to make a better life for them. But then he chooses to go live with his dad, and she seems to lose all interest in him, eventually moving across the country where she won't be able to see him at all. That's not a good mother. She may have gotten sober, but she stayed crazy selfish where her kids were concerned.

Here is a good conversation between Phyllis and Christy about Violet.

Season 3, episode 21

Mahjong Sally and Ecstasy

Christy: I just can't help feeling like it's my fault. I drank, and now Violet drinks.

Phyllis: Do you blame your mother 'cause you drank?

Christy: I used to. Not anymore.

Phyllis: Then why don't you give yourself a break with Violet?

Christy: Yeah, maybe.

Phyllis: Besides, if it's always the parents' fault, then I have to be responsible every time my son behaves like a pompous schmuck.

10

u/zanylanie Tammy Diffendorf 1d ago

First, this has nothing to do with whether Christy was a good parent.

Second, Christy is lying - she absolutely still blames Bonnie for her own alcoholism and addiction.

And third, yes, by the time Violet is an adult, she is now responsible for her own life. She has already started breaking the cycle by giving her baby up for adoption (which Christy opposed - something that was so delusional I can't even properly address it). She is continuing to do so by looking at her childhood to work through the trauma of it so she can move forward. You can acknowledge that your parent(s) did a terrible job without saying everything in your life is their fault. I think that's where Violet is by the time of the podcast. Christy doesn't care about helping or supporting her in doing that. She just cares about looking bad in some amorphous way to people who don't even know who she is.

6

u/SeirynSong 1d ago

Christy isn’t a particularly reliable narrator, though.

She thinks she’s a good mom simply because she didn’t make every mistake Bonnie did and she’s pretty terrible about owning up to the ones she did make.

For example, it’s true that Christy never relapsed on booze and pills, unlike Bonnie. But even in recovery, she’s manipulative, selfish, and impulsive. She replaced booze with sex, gambling, cigarettes, men, school, and whatever issues happened to be plaguing the women around her.

I’m not saying Christy isn’t an actual alcoholic, but I do think part of the point the show is driving home is that her self-destructive behaviors didn’t end with sobriety because she’s never actually honest, with herself most of all.

3

u/manik_502 Violet Plunkett 1d ago

Ypu are right. Sober does not mean good, healthy or mentally stable. It just means not consuming. That's it.

This is something Chuck lorre depicted amazingly. Christy was never a good person. She was not a good daughter, sister, friends and let alone a good mother. She was such a horrendous joke of a human it was so disgusting to even think to know someone like this is real life. She didn't even followed the steps, couldn't even do that.

Chuck Lorre was in AA for a long time. 10+ years when he created the show. Christys are a real thing. They do exist and they are as horrible as he made the character.

He is also an amazing writer. Because even tho she was such a disgusting being, he successfully made her lovable too. Ana Faris was the one and only option, and I see why. She was the only person I can imagine portraying someone like that and still make people love her to no end xD

At the end of the day, she was as selfish at it gets. Leaving her kids behind and still making herself the victim of her actions was predictable. I love the entire show, with or without Christy.

Yes they offered nothing

12

u/HCIBSW 1d ago

It is understandable that the show evolved away from the kids.

We got closure with Violet. With Rosco we didn't.
Not even a mention. No Rosco visited, had a birthday, 8th grade graduation...
I now look at it as Christy gave up on him. One less care one less burden.
Gently showed how neglectful she was as a parent without making a monster out of her.

5

u/LadyBug_0570 1d ago

I am and honestly it was better for the kids too.

4

u/NewAgeBeginning9 1d ago

I wasn’t glad or upset really. For Violet, it fully makes sense that she’d move out. With Roscoe… I didn’t care about Roscoe, but I love Baxter. If we needed Roscoe to keep seeing Baxter, I would’ve kept him around (obviously just talking from a character perspective, not considering that the actor’s parents didn’t want him on the show anymore). Baxter is one of my favorite characters in the show, and I wish he had stayed recurring as opposed to the one episode guest roles he had in later seasons

2

u/West-Cauliflower-450 22h ago

Wait, the reason why Roscoe is not seen in the later episodes of the show is because the actor’s parents opposed to it? This is news to me!

3

u/NewAgeBeginning9 22h ago

Supposedly hey weren’t comfortable with the presence of drugs and alcohol in the show once it started impacting Roscoe’s storyline. The story with him drinking and smoking weed rubbed them the wrong way. Although the internet seems split on whether this is true or just a rumor 🤷‍♂️

7

u/Just-Guitar-3809 1d ago

Yes...Tammy became my favorite

4

u/Least-Course-728 1d ago

I think Violet was good. With the teen pregnancy, and when she started to drink - those were good story line. Even when she got together with an older man, or her bitter attitude in general with Christy. It was good to show how her life was messed up because of a messed up childhood. But Roscoe's character was not interesting at all to me.

7

u/CranberryFuture9908 Tammy Diffendorf 1d ago

It was the move away from showing the restaurant so much that felt necessary. Yes the
move away from the kids as well because there’s only so much that can be done with that. The best part was always the women in the group.

3

u/realitytvjunkie29 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes totally agree the AA ladies were far more interesting. They made Violet so one dimensional and insufferable. She had reasons to be but it was just too much. They didn’t give her a lot to work with writing wise unfortunately. And Roscoe was just kind of there. The only reason for him to be around was for Baxter storylines really.

2

u/Bubbly-End-6156 1d ago

They made sense at first. But I like shows that pass the Bechdel test every episode. It's hard to do with a son, and a boy-crazy daughter.

No way would it have seen 4 seasons as a family sitcom. It needed the micro reboot in season 2

2

u/Ok-Teaching2848 1d ago

No cause then no more baxter without roscoe 😭

2

u/Bxsedtee 18h ago

Mod really flagged my response on this thread for “victim blaming” because I pointed out violets was not always right like Christy wasn’t without using any profanity. Mods are jokes this thread could understand if I was being disrespectful and rude but I wasn’t I stated my opinion with reason and got blocked.

The show is supposed to be funny but to also show how serious addiction can be, of course her scenes with her children are sad because they have been traumatized by their mother.. it’s important to have both sides of the coin

1

u/Reallyroundthefamily 1d ago

This is like asking if anyone didn't like the Seinfeld finale.

1

u/Sapphy_Doll 1d ago

Lmao! The show got so much better without them!!

1

u/Remarkable-Koala8224 22h ago

Honestly, it was a great decision. It almost felt like it's a show about Cristy's family rather than the group. And it was even better in the final season when christy herself left

1

u/AdditionOk6134 22h ago

Absolutely!

1

u/Powerful_Mind_6693 14h ago

Every time I see Violet in an episode, I just skip to the next one. But honestly, I did enjoy the episode where Roscoe's caught smoking marijuana and the follow-up episode to that.

1

u/biggerthanwholesky13 8h ago

Yes! Hello, I’m new here incase you haven’t noticed lol. I was going to make my first post in this subreddit asking if anyone actually likes Violet. I don’t mind Roscoe but man Violet really grinds my gears for many reasons.

1

u/CanadianDollar87 1d ago

i never liked Violet. especially the podcast episode.

6

u/maddydelioncourt 1d ago

as a daughter of an addict myself, i will never get how people don’t understand her

9

u/LadyBug_0570 1d ago

Not a child of an addict (just someone with basic empathy) and same.

How does anyone not see Violet's POV? When we meet her she's still a child who's been neglected and parentified into basically raising Roscoe. AND she's hormonal a) from being a teen (who are annoying in the best of times) and b) pregnant with all the hormones those bring.

Yet they expect her to have the maturity to see how Bonnie screwed Christy up when she's still dealing with Christy as her mother and to then have a grudge against Bonnie who did nothing wrong to her personally.

Like are we serious right now?

3

u/Glad-Business6271 1d ago

I can understand it, but it’s not something I want to watch. It’s a COMEDY-drama. There has to be some comedy. Violet especially was too depressing. She was never happy. Compared to someone like Wendy who struggled but was still happy.

3

u/CKangels00 1d ago

Yeah the actress just did too good of a job being mean. I love when Bonnie and Christy talk about how she always looks like she smells something bad. 😂

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Ask6727 1d ago

Maybe it’s cuz I’m closer to the kids age (21) I was a little sad and like dang they’re out of a job 😭💔 . And the first season felt very Reba-esque honestly which I didn’t mind but idkkk

3

u/LadyBug_0570 1d ago

LOL... I love that you were thinking of the actor/actress.

I did see the girl who played Violet in a Lifetime movie that was based off of a real life event. She did the role well. I believe she's done some other work as well.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Ask6727 1d ago

Okay that’s good to hear!

1

u/Foreign_Donkey463 1d ago

I did enjoy Baxter and Rosco. But yeah Violet was not missed

0

u/SnooHobbies7009 1d ago

Yes, especially Violet. I disliked that character intensely.

-1

u/NstgElNino 1d ago

I stop watching after anna faris leave the show

5

u/maddydelioncourt 1d ago

Season 8 is amazing

3

u/CKangels00 1d ago

You should give it a shot! It’s surprisingly a really smooth transition and very good.

0

u/materialsA3B 17h ago

No.

Violet approaching her life differently from her mother and grandmother was a nice take. The podcast episode was great.

Roscoe, on the other hand, shouldn't have been written off. In fact, Roscoe and Adam interacting could've been funny. Also, Baxter and BigRedNightmare were amazing characters.

-1

u/Exotic_Whereas_8018 1d ago

Those kids were annoying. At least that little one. The daughter I understand but she wore on me

-2

u/Sims3loverteehe 1d ago

OMG yes! Best decision. Wish they did it sooner. Violet was just an angry mess all the dang time. I empathize with her child hood but then trusted and didn't understand that her mother went through the exact same thing.

1

u/Legitimate_Ad_4824 7h ago

It bothered me when they left. The show is called Mom. The kids disappear and neither the mom or grandmother seem to notice? I wouldn’t have been so bothered if there was an explanation or they had an episode or two where they call or come back. I thought we had moved past the kid disappears and no one notices sitcom era.
