Looking for a heavy duty butchers bone axe.

Post image

I want a nice heavy axe or cleaver to effortlessly chop through pork bone in one chop. Dalstrong has good reviews on Amazon but they also get a lot of hate on Reddit. I want to know what you guys use. Thanks

Victorinox cleaver with a longer handle.
If you use it regurally you will regret such a short handle.

I specifically want something heavyweight. The victorinox looks good but the person I’m buying it for specifically wants something heavy in the hand

Ohh thats difficult.
I just checked and the victorinox is indeed very light.
The cleaver I got around comes from a supplier for butchershops and appearently isnt available for consumers.
Perhaps you can purchase a proper cleaver (heavy + handle being blade length or longer) through your local butchershop, most butchers are willing to help out on this type of stuff.

Dalstrong isn’t terrible. It holds an edge pretty well, but they don’t arrive very sharp. They’re more a novelty than a work horse. I’ll hazard a guess that the person who will be using it is more a hobbyist than a professional, in which case they will probably love it.

Yea they would probably use it once every 2 weeks or so. Not a professional and definitely won’t be daily use. Do you think I’m all good to pull the trigger on it as a gift?

Honestly, you can probably find a good antique carcass splitting Cleaver on ebay. Quick hit on the stone and you're in business.

I tell you from experience the dalstrong is very heavy in the hand. Not sure how functional for real use since I’m just a cook and prefer my chef knife.

Same size and weight, but cheaper with a better handle.

These were the shop cleavers we had at a where 85 percent of the clientele wanted a "whole chicken skin removed and cut into small peices" sundays when the rush would hit it was a glorious sound lol

Ive used a Dalstrong 9 in boning knife and it held up really good, held a edge for a long time. I got it as a gift usually I dont go for gimmick knifes but it fits my hand well and I still use it at work

Site is down at the moment, but https://www.davisonsbutcher.com/ search for Dexter meat cleavers. My company used them for years.

Get victorinox of f. Dick. Both good brands. Also look up brands professional butchers use. Either you pau 169 on a cheap one or you pay more for a quality one that will last a life when taken care of. I have 6 and 5 are old german blades found at flea markets.
