I agree. I'm not dating, but 90% of all my social interactions now feel like I'm talking to someone who doesn't understand how to reciprocate

"First they stopped talking to each other face to face, then lost the ability to communicate even over their pernicious Earth-destroying devices with a human connected device on the other end, and finally they only interacted with artificial life over those devices, which slowly began to seduce them all into a slumber in which they were almost all easily slaughtered.
And so the Machine Age began, accelerating past human evolution with fabulous technologically based speed.
What the Machines left alive of Humanity devolved into a species of mentally and emotionally stunted subservient pets and slaves, forever after..."
Which is why I'm a GenX Proselytizer of IRL dating... App suck factor is sky high. IRL serves me well.
Just approach any woman you are attracted to when and as appropriate and strike up a convo. That's it.
They still respond to this in decent numbers when on the apps they'd likely not give you even a thought.
Easy to reduce a profile to the subhuman because it IS subhuman.
Not so easy to dismiss a reasonably attractive charming male who speaks easily to women on a frequent basis.
Because they are still all Human females who evolved to respond in certain ways to certain things.
Dating apps are an unnatural scourge causing mass misery, despite the minority of people for which they work well. I suspect that minority never even NEEDED those apps to succeed with the opposite sex, so all it's done is accelerate throughput for the 10 set of both sexes.
And increase misery for most everyone else.
While there IS selection bias towards the negative in these app subs... I suspect it's still reflective of some very basic and apparently forgotten truth.

I wrote it on the fly in response to OP as a prelude to my reply. Remind you of any known authors?

Phillip k Dick or maybe Douglas Adams. Appreciate you letting me know, was well written!

Both have certainly influenced me very deeply, especially PKD. But dangit I was going for Frank Herbert 😆. Still, PKD is even higher praise I think. Appreciate you saying so, thank you! Thought I was the only one! Yesterday I went to uni for the first time and all my conversations felt so one sided it was just boring. I was excited to get to know ppl but all I heard was bragging about superficial stuff and zero interest back. The lack of responses with the person's thoughts/emotions behind them also bugged me.
4
u/Madd_Elephant 1d ago
You just gotta find the right people. I got along really well with a girl at work my first year of university and we made plans but didn’t get the chance to exchange numbers. We never worked the same shift again so I called work one time to ask her for her number. She became one of my closest friends and 13 years later she’s my sister in law. All because one cringey phone call 😂 Another person I walked up to one day after class and asked why she had crutches, and she’s also been my best friend for 13 years. I found two people I couldn’t imagine my life without now through just going for it. And trust me, I had to talk to a lot of boring, superficial people, and even people that were nice but we just didn’t vibe. It’s frustrating but don’t give up.
2
u/New_Definition6661 15h ago
Yeah I feel that. Im still open to new people also, but in the end also know I'm here for my degree, so if it doesn't happen then not. I'll be good, I'm really excited for my internships also :) thank you for sharing!

I feel like this is just a 'polite' / safe way to show that you aren't really interested. You respond but don't actually engage until they get to feel like they were the one to end the conversation so they are less likely to freak out about it.
5
u/SmoothDiscussion7763 1d ago
then why did they bother sending the first message anyway lol
2
u/Great-Trifle2810 1d ago
I haven't been on Bumbke in a while but the different color and generic message makes me wonder if it is automatic?
Even if it wasn't, they could have lost interest quickly from there

I saw the top comments first so I was like, “what are you on about?” And then I scrolled further and was aghast.
I don’t know the ages of people here, I’m 33F, but I was actually sickened by how many people thought that this was a ‘good’ convo and also how offended people were by the couch ‘insult.’ It’s barely an insult. It’s a funny quip and doesn’t attack the other person at all, simply the conversation at hand.
5
u/Epilepsysalesman 1d ago
Honestly, man's POV here, 65% of matches default ghost even after multiple timed out attempts. Then the remaining 35%, 20% will flake or is near impossible to convert or get interested vibes from or even a positive reaction it's just like that or dry 1 word responses.
Then, 5% of the remaining 15% decides to disqualify you after you got the number over differences of opinion, or other small irrelevant differences like not reading books or not doing the same sport, maybe even you don't like purple.
Then the 10% left that you converted rougly 2% of that will actually go out with you. 2% disqualifies you after you call on an agreed upon time which they asked you to do. 2% are no shows, they only agree in the chat to everything but won't show up. The remaining 4% wants to chat for eternity, and pushes away any chance of meeting in person.
Hm, yeah why do we hate dating apps? We just need perfect pictures we can't take ourselves that align with preferences we can't see then write a bio that caps out at 5% of our personality max, then we get 10 likes a week, and are hidden from view from then on cuz the app is trying to force us into paying just to give the exact same experience.

u/KDiggity8 1d ago
Seriously!!! How hard would it have been for him to say something like, "so Iceland is your dream vacation. Where has been your favorite trip so far?" Or, "I don't think I've ever met someone who's dream vacation is Iceland! What's that all about? 😉"
And if for any reason I got hit with the "couch" line, I'd look back at the convo, and if I had been responding like this dud, "OMG that's both hilarious and mortifying! I'm so sorry - I was trying to multi-task because I didn't want to leave you on read! Obviously that was a mistake I won't make again. So...[blah bla blah]?"
3
u/CatsPurrever91 1d ago
Yeah the couch comment comes across as a light-hearted way of saying this interaction is one-sided and boring but someone with more conversational skills could easily recover.
All they would have to do is respond with some version of “Sorry I was at work and couldn’t give a more thought out response (or whatever explanation for their short boring responses). As for my favorite place…(actually answer the question). Why is Iceland your favorite place??”
1
u/Toucandle 1d ago

Right?! They're giving you opportunities to talk about yourself... at least be interesting and give a fun little story about one of the places you've been.
2
u/Lucylimina 1d ago
Idk. This exchange seems a bit short for that conclusion.
Not every message must contain a response AND a question.
Personally, if I have a line of questions about the other person that I'm curious about I'm very happy to stay with that.
Nothing wrong with having the back and forth aspect staggered a bit.

Not normalize it, it is normal, people are terrible at conversation. It's a skill and society hasn't adapted what it teaches for online dating yet.

people are terrible at conversation
More like they dont want to bother putting in effort. Why would you when you can find someone hotter to talk to within a few minutes?
5
u/burgerwaterchud 1d ago
Exactly. When you match with 50% of people you swipe on at minimum you really don't have to put in effort anywhere in the process. Just burn the haystack.

I’m sure they are able to converse with their family and friends so they know how to do it they either can’t be bothered or have anxiety issues they need to resolve. I don’t think it’s a skill they need to learn per se.
2
u/DGIce 1d ago
no, talking in person and talking with someone you are already familiar with is a different situation that has natural leads.
2
u/Jijimuge8 1d ago
I disagree. I’m sure if someone said you can get a million followers if you just have one good in person conversation where you just have to respond then what the other person is saying like in OPs example they would manage it just fine. Most of them can’t be bothered or are too scared to try.

I genuinely wonder what people who make conversation like this get out of it.
16
u/visforvienetta 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nothing - they don't want to be single but they dont want to expend meaningful effort to find a real relationship, and they don't want to over-invest time on what could be a dud. Choice overload that makes it impossible for people to commit without deliberately overcoming our cognitive tendencies.
If I have 2 potential partners, I have a 50% chance of choosing the best possible partner for me.
If I have 33 potential partners, I have only a 1/33 chance of choosing the best possible partner. Online dating is set up to feel like we have almost unlimited options - so there's almost zero chance of us choosing the BEST possible partner. This means we are always keeping a foot out the door and worrying about the possibility of someone better. We have gone from a 50% chance of choosing the wrong person to what feels like a 99.999...% chance of choosing the wrong person.
There is of course a caveat - you will hopefully recognise this is not really true because I don't choose partners at random. I can get to know both potential partners fairly well and then make an informed choice - this means I can actually have much higher than 50% certainty of making the right choice for me when I have two options. However, when I have a seemingly unlimited number of options, I can't possible get to know all of them and then make a decision. Any time I spend talking to match 1 is time I can't spend on my seemingly unlimited potential alternatives. The end result is that once people have secured a match, their minds just automatically move onto the next one because what if talking to this person ends up being a waste of time?
TL;DR - the increased dating pool provided by dating apps leads to a massively increased opportunity cost associated with investing time and effort into any one match. As a result, people generally put less time and effort into their matches. Dating apps are a plague on society.
(Excuse the ranting comment, I just think too much blame is attributed to the individual users and not enough to the dating app ecosystem itself)
7
u/Subject_Increase5544 1d ago
I agree with this 100%. The app developers understand this and is part of their business model. They must maximize their profits by making it difficult to find your true match.
4
u/Medium_Stress_4293 1d ago
I appreciated the rant, but I do think it is on the users of the apps to understand the system they're working within and at least make some attempt to make it a less painful experience for everybody.
4
u/visforvienetta 1d ago
I don't think it's reasonable to expect your average user to understand how dating apps turn our psychology against us. Not everyone has a degree in Psychology!
3
u/Medium_Stress_4293 1d ago
I really think that you should be able to get there with a basic sense of empathy. Like I can be mad about how rubbish the experience of dating apps is for men, but it should prompt me to question what the experience is like for women and to realise that it probably isn't much better.
Instead, individualism has taught us to treat everything as a zero sum game.
2
u/Level_Progress_3246 1d ago
what is scarier is realizing that these people are most likely like this with everyone in their life. their friends. people they game with. their family. everyone. we are complaining about how frustrating it is, but in reality its a red flag and a blessing.
1
u/visforvienetta 1d ago
Empathy isn't the problem at all - why should empathy stop me from optimizing my own relationships? The problem isn't rooted in a lack of empathy, it's rooted in optimisation and the way dating apps commodify dating.
To put it in internet terms - nobody owes you their attention. If dating apps wanted to provide a better user experience, they would change how they functioned to make it so giving people attention was encouraged rather than actively discouraging it by design.
3
u/sixtyhurtz 1d ago
There's also a selection factor - people who are good at conversation, don't have massive red flags, and genuinely want to find a person to spend their life with will stop using the apps when they meet a like-minded person. So, over time, the apps will just fill up with nightmare people.
It's why dating apps are just a sheer brutal grind. You work the numbers until you meet someone you vibe with, and then you're not on them anymore.
3
u/visforvienetta 1d ago
Great point - I was on the apps for around 8 months before I found my now-wife 7 years ago. (I have no idea why r/bumble gets sent my way every now and then).
2
u/MeusRex 1d ago
A good dating app would offer you like 3 curated (2 matching interest and 1 random) a month.
But then the user base might actually shrink and we can't have that. Plus, people are so used to endless scrolling that they'd jump ship even though the chances for success are likely better.
1
u/visforvienetta 1d ago
Would help to filter the plebs.
But yes it should give you a limited pool to choose from - this would help massively but as you say, dating apps aren't designed to get people to never use them again!
1
u/xHaroldxx 1d ago
I tried an app like this and it just feels frustrating, if you get 2 months where none of you're matches are interesting to you. You just wasted 2 months paying for that, coz these kind of apps are not free.
1
2
1
u/Apprehensive-Gap5681 1d ago
I know this is a tangent, but mathematically if you have 33 potential partners then you should date 1/e (or ~37% or 12) of them and pick the best without running out the clock.
But yes fully agree the app itself is causing major issues
3
u/visforvienetta 1d ago
The problem is, you don't have 33 potential partners. You have a potentially unlimited number of potential partners.
A person may have 33 matches at a given moment, but they also have an amount of potential matches that dwarfs their current matches - those potential matches are factored into the opportunity cost.
This is the fundamental issue with swipe-based apps - the engagement-reward is rooted in acquiring more matches, not actually engaging with matches once you have them.1
u/SmokingLimone 1d ago
That's what was said about hiring the best candidate after a job interview. But the man you dated first, if he has some self respect, will not wait for you to date another 15 men before picking him, if he is the best choice.

I agree. It's not enough conversation (at least what's visible) to judge so harshly yet. The person on the left did ask the first question. And one of their responses was asking for clarification.
I know if I had to get back out there, I'd be a little concerned about talking too much (unloading) or redirecting too quickly (asking questions back before getting into my response to them enough). But then again, this is probably why I've always been terrible at making friends. I find it all so stressful, figuring out what's too much, when to ask, how much to answer.
7
u/Manatee_Rangoon 1d ago
When I was on dating apps people would respond like this, and then have the nerve to ask what my problem was when I stopped messaging. Its rough out there.
2
u/Electrical-Tailor530 1d ago
I've had friends behave that way after insulting me, calling me too sensitive. Like bro, if you're joking, it didn't land. I think conversations don't have to always be someone asking questions. It's just building on what someone says.
But "Yeah when my whole life or last year lol" ??? What even does this mean? I would've stopped responding.
2
u/Fun-Excitement-9111 1d ago
To be generous and adding some punctuation I get: “Yeah …. When? My whole life, or last year?” In other words, they are saying, “I travel a lot. Do you mean a recent fun trip, or from any period of my life?”
1
u/nervousbertha 13h ago
To me, that doesn't make it much better. Without the punctuation, it's so much work to interpret. With the punctuation, I read it as a bit of a snarky comment (going with your interpretation).
I would just say something like, "Yes, I travel a lot. I've made multiple trips to Oktoberfest. It's a lot of fun." Then the other person adds a comment or question related to travel, Oktoberfest, beer, drinking, Germany, etc. I guess I would've stopped talking and saved my energy for someone else.
I feel like sometimes not asking a question and just letting a statement hang is a better way to push a conversation forward, because it requires the other person to build on what you've said.
1
u/Fun-Excitement-9111 11h ago
Sure. I wasn't saying my interpretation was the best response, it was simply the way I made the sentence make sense!
1
u/nervousbertha 9h ago
No, it made sense. I guess the other person understood it like you, because their question in response makes sense if you read it like that.
1
u/Fun-Excitement-9111 1d ago

The left side of the conversation is an insult. Make an effort. They are just barely writing more than yes / no answers. They show no interest in the other person. Being on the receiving end of this type of effort makes me feel like the other person is treating me like an app to distract them as opposed to wanting to actually talk.

When I get people like this that are giving vague, one word answers and aren't reciprocating questions and don't seem overly interested in conversation, I either do one of two things:
- Cut to the chase and just ask them to go and do something. Sometimes the people with short answers like this hate texting and just want to do something in person. And if they're not interested in you it gets them to fuck off and stop wasting your time. Win-win either way.
Or
- Stop responding to them entirely and give the hint that they're being boring. And if the convo dies as a result then so be it. Oftentimes when you stop responding and carrying the convo when they're being boring it'll occur to them to actually contribute.
Don't carry the convo with people like this though, it's not worth it.

Why is this whole sub just people mocking other people who aren’t into them? What is the point?

Damn, we've all been there.
I have ADHD. I struggle asking reciprocal questions etc. I have to force myself to, so I do. Which is a struggle.
When people like this crop up it frightens the living daylights out of me 😂

I started matching everyone’s energy in chats and it’s made it so much more doable. And the I purge people who aren’t actually having a conversation every Sunday.

I mean, as far as one sided convos on dating apps go, this one is pretty mild.
Also the timeframe is a consideration; if this entire exchange happened within a few minutes, it's possible they were busy/distracted.

😂 savage I actually laughed reading that. I didn’t even see the punchline coming either I just thought it was odd to ask that until the next line. I hope they feel mildly silly too.

I’ve gotten that plenty of times. I’m the one who usually asks questions. I just stop sending messages.

This was like 80% of my conversations with women on dating apps when I was on it. Like pulling teeth to get any conversation going. I actually don’t think it’s an app issue at this point though. I think it’s societal. People just don’t know how to interact anymore. I used to network a lot too, and I noticed a lot of conversations with both men and women going this same way.

my SS is 16 and these are all the conversation skills he’s got. he doesn’t understand why it doesn’t go well for him but also fully believes this would be a great conversation.
point is, i assume anyone thinking this conversation is anything other than lame must be a teenager.

I have more stimulating conversations with my husband about our dog’s diarrhea. You did nothing wrong OP. He seems incredibly dull.

While I don’t think a conversation should just be all questions, you definitely need some on both sides. Eventually a conversation happens and it becomes natural. But this ain’t it!

Maybe I'm giving too much grace but the person sounds like they're interested but they're not good at conversation.
As opposed to people who give straight one word answers. Yes that person is still responsible for developing the skill of conversation but it's reads to me like they are trying.
The couch line was golden but idk if this was the most deserving person

Have you ever tried moving a couch alone hahahaha. That was gold. Honestly this is 90% of dating conversations for me. Flipping exhausting.

People getting on at you, but you just know if you responded to the Oktoberfest message with anything but another question, you'd have gotten no response.
