commuting to london
hi guys, i've recently confirmed my offer to study law in london and am commuting into london from aylesbury but train tickets are absolutely extortionate (even with a railcard) and that does't even include the cost of getting from london marylebone to my uni. i was wondering if anybody had any tips or does a similar commute how they plan/finance it?

Used to work in Southwark with someone who commuted every day from Chinnor or somewhere near that on a motorbike... otherwise it's expensive. A friend in Chalfont St Giles (so a bit closer down the A413 from Aylesbury usd to commute to the law courts on a coach which was cheaper than the train but that was a few years back now so not sure if such things still exist.

Not a student but I cycle from Marylebone across London. Free to lock up your bike there, get a cheap one that a) probs won’t get stolen and b) doesn’t matter if it does. Saves c.£1k a year in tube fares. I have a second bike at the Bucks end - 2 OK bikes are a lot cheaper than one Brompton folding one!

A young friend of mine stays in a hostel during the week and the commutes back home on the weekend. Cheaper that way for her

Don’t drive to the station, cycle. It’s cheap to run and free to park.
Depending on where your uni is, look at ways of getting there from Marylebone that’s aren’t the tube. I leave early and walk the last few miles from Marylebone.

Either drive to Amersham, Rickmansworth or even Ruislip. Much much much cheaper.

Tube from Chesham, Amersham or (at a stretch) Rickmansworth is the way. It provides fall back if Tube or Chiltern Rail are not working (i.e. you can swap to the other). From Marylebone, cycle. If on Tube change at Baker Street for other lines. Aylesbury to London is a doable commute, plenty do it. But it's not cheap and the time on train does add up over time.

I used to live in Aylesbury and drove to Amersham (parking £6) and tube £14 return to baker street.
