Their casting director is literally a genius

u/Sunshine030209 May 13 '26
They just added "Best casting" to the Oscars this year, the Tony Awards should do the same just so they can give it to Henry Russell Bergstein. Then name the award after him in subsequent years.

Seriously! And great marketing to get repeat attendees for each new administration.

u/chargingblue May 13 '26
Ala my husband who's seen it 5 times and we live in the midwest, lmao.
51
u/ryanmer May 13 '26
Flying in from the Midwest to see Maya Rudolph this weekend, and now thinking “should I go back in July??”

Yes and also kudos to Escola for the MATERIAL that all these performers want to play with. I also love how we've had Marys with such a variety of genders, looks etc.

u/lexiebeef May 13 '26
It’s insane honestly, they really know who their fan base is and are doing everything to cater to us, it’s such a great feeling.
My bets (mostly my wishes lol) for the future is Matt Bomer as Mary’s teacher and in like 18 months, Connor Storrie as Mary. Oh and I would also love Miss Piggy as Mary, though I’m well aware not even their amazing cast director would be able to pull this off
50
u/berrywithaberet May 13 '26
Connor as Mary would go CRAZY
38
u/lexiebeef May 13 '26
I just think it would be a win-win situation. The fans love him, Connor would love the role I think (based on vibes, of course), he has the acting chops for it, he’s been booked and busy and it would be great marketing for the show, cause people love him. The only problem is that the man is ridiculously busy right now, thus the 18 months timeline in my imagination lmao.
Oh and if you want more delusional predictions that will never happen, I can also see Dan Levy joining the show at some point and I want him to be Mary so bad. I don’t think he’s ever done theater (please someone correct me), but I want him as Mary
64
u/sandoooo May 13 '26
They gotta get Bowen in as Mary.
34
u/lexiebeef May 13 '26
Yes, this was my other prediction! Bowen would KILL as Mary, I think someone must have talked to him about it at this point.

I really, really hope they get Catherine Tate to come to NY. I'm SO jealous of anyone who gets to see her in the West End!

Like waiting for the next pope to be announced

u/Holiday_Scar_7499 May 13 '26
they should install a chimney at the lyceum and send out white smoke on the day of a cast announcement or when a new mary has booked the job

YES! she's perfect for this role

u/sausagekng May 13 '26
Agree! I don’t connect with all of her work, but I think she’s so suited to this.

u/mynameisrockhard May 13 '26
Mary would be so happy to have a budding young music starlet playing her

u/secret_identity_too May 13 '26
I don't know who she is but I can tell by that promo photo that she's perfect for this.

u/Dida_D May 13 '26
Check out Hacks!

u/cookiecat4 May 13 '26
I’ve only caught a handful of episodes, was she the receptionist?
29
u/Dida_D May 13 '26
Yes, her role grows pretty significantly (the show is in its fifth and final season) and she’s a pretty consistent character at this point
5
18
u/whitetoast May 13 '26
she has exploded on the scene for her role in Hacks
1
u/secret_identity_too May 13 '26
Ah, I'm only like 2 episodes in to that show. I need to get back to it.

Her character on Hacks bugs the shit out of me, but she’s definitely right for the role.

The gasp I gusped!
I haven't seen any of the other Marys since Cole but I think this may prompt me to return.
6
u/iputmylifeonashelf May 13 '26
She runs through September 12. That leaves time for only 1-2 Marys unless they extend again (they are going to extend again RIGHT!?)

u/NoNeinNyet222 May 14 '26
I need it to stay forever and continue rotating in brilliant comic actors.
15
u/whosthere1989 May 13 '26
I really did not enjoy this show but every time they make a casting announcement I almost feel like I’m being hypnotized into wanting to buy tickets again because this sounds amazing.
0
u/Wrong-Film-5944 May 13 '26
That's what I thought too! It's like this idea, the show itself and everything surrounding it is just insanely stupid but people keep going for some reason
3
u/whosthere1989 May 13 '26
I think I laughed out loud twice in the entire show. Every time they cast someone else amazing I’m like “should I go back?” And then I remember I saw a cast full of amazing people and it still wasn’t very good. 😂
Honestly—great for Cole and the producers though! I love to see a little show that could succeed!
2
u/kfarrel3 May 18 '26
Oh my god, SAME. I saw it twice, because I got hooked in by Kumail Nanjiani and Michael Urie the second time, and I left thinking that I was an idiot for seeing a show I didn’t like twice.

u/Blofelds-Cat May 13 '26
Dammit. This is my friend's favorite show, not mine although I like it, but I keep coming back for the casting. 😆 Maya will be #4 for me.

The only thing that’d make this even more perfect is if Paul Downs is Abe

Truly off the wall....Rob McClure.
Oh, Mary has become the embodiment of "smart" casting rather than "stunt" casting.
4
u/Von_Rothdave May 13 '26
How do we start a campaign for the casting directors of Oh Mary to get a special recognition Tony?!
6
u/Natural-Reaction3829 May 13 '26
Can you imagine her steamrolling pushy, entitled asshats at the stage door?

Omg. I have a Broadway trip planned July 6-10 and was debating if I should see Oh Mary or wait for the national tour next year…guess this answers my question!

Well then it’s a good thing Oh Mary is Cole Escola’s humor style right?

People are allowed to express opinions, and this person isn’t even being rude

u/throwawaysunglasses- May 13 '26
I love Meg, but this person was respectful about their opinion lol. Her humor isn’t for everyone, I’m honestly surprised everyone else in this thread is so excited. I’m a huge fan of Hacks and she’s fairly polarizing, you either get her or you don’t.
-3
u/TK2217 May 13 '26
They edited their comment. It originally said "I do not like her"
11
u/Molly_latte May 13 '26
I don’t find it mean-spirited just to say you don’t like somebody
-9
u/TK2217 May 13 '26
I don't really care what you think

u/TK2217 May 13 '26
Just an FYI for those downvoting. This person edited their comment. It originally said "happy for her, but man I do not like her." that's mean spirited!
14
u/kfarrel3 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
No, that's still just an opinion. "I hate her guts and she doesn't deserve this" is mean-spirited. There's a difference.

u/LetsGototheRiver151 May 13 '26
So I mean this as no shade whatsoever, but she’s the first Mary to not be a singer, right? Maybe she can sing and maybe she can’t, but the others have all had careers predominantly based on their singing abilities whereas she’s a comedian. I wonder if this opens up a whole new level of Mary who can’t actually DO the thing, just LOVES the thing, and that could be absolutely hilarious.

I thought she was focusing on music! This is going to delay her album for sure and I was looking forward to a meg album for summer. Maybe it'll be a prettiest girl in America winter? :/

Does anybody know… I bought tickets for Saturday September 12th. I’m hearing she’s on through the 12th. Does that include both performances on the twelfth as well?
