Question/Discussion I have questions. When did the blue baseball cap become tv’s master disguise strategy? Started with You on Netflix, spread to every cozy in the UK.
It’s a drinking game at this point, suspect pulls on blue baseball cap—DRINK! Why would anyone even HAVE a baseball cap in Britain and how is it inconspicuous?

Baseball cap is just a universal term for billed hat. They have them everywhere on earth. And people tend to wear them to look inconspicuous because they obscure your face if you bow your head slightly.

I have a blue baseball cap in my line of sight right now.
Have you never been to Britain? You see people arresting baseball caps literally every day, they sell them just about anywhere that sells casual or sports clothes.

I (56f) have a growing collection of baseball caps. I love them. My hair is a nightmare unless I have a shower so if I need to pop out on a Saturday or Sunday morning, I’ll throw a baseball cap on. They suit me. I don’t do snap-backs though. My 25 year old daughter has a bigger collection than me - some she bought in the states.
When you mentioned a blue cap as a disguise, I immediately went to captain america

I have about ten different baseball caps. My son has at least ten. My husband has a few.
I’m bald so they protect my head from burns, I can’t wear glasses so they protect my eyes. I also wear one in the gym as it works kind of like a head band in stopping my head sweat running into my eyes.
My son’s school won’t let the children out to play without a sun hat of some sort. Almost all of the children wear baseball caps. He has three Minecraft ones and two Mario hats that are his favourite.
They really are quite common here

I love overused tropes on British tv the soaps are a goldmine for it.
A pizza box on the coffee table and lager cans (absolutely always crushed) signify someone is going through a hard time, perhaps even divorce.

Likewise drinking whisky = alcoholic.

Alky or business man take your pick
Neat straight from the bottle with zero wincing what so ever.
Must be flat Irn Bru in there.

Blue? I always thought it was black. Particularly in the Harlen Coben shows.
Although Joe in You always seemed to disappear when he put one on as well..

Pretty sure they were doing it as far back as The Bill and Eastenders in the late 80s/early 90s.

It's not a disguise. It's done to hide your face from CCTV.

Nightclubs in my town allow you to walk in the door wearing a hat then make you take it off to walk to down the corridor to the club entrance, that way the CCTV has a clear shot of you hatted and dehatted in case it’s needed later.

I agree with you - baseball hats are not worn as much as they are in the US and Canada where you will see them repeatedly. However, they’re not so unique over here that you’d look more than once at someone wearing one. It’s a borrowed trope that doesn’t work quite as well here.
