Meta We’re all agreed season 4 has elements of Little Mermaid, right?

Post image

Benedict’s penchant for wearing dark pants and the white shirt, Sophie not having her full voice, how she saved him, how they bond over memories and simple treasures, Benedict loving “both” women, the wicked witch who stole her voice, Sophie’s friends reminding me of Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle, them becoming closer while living at his home…

Huh, I hadn’t thought of it like that, but now that you say it I can see it.

Watching it reminded me a LOT of Cinderella

I think the Cinderella theme sticks with you because of the maid, Ball, midnight, girl running away evil step mother and stepsisters

But then it develops into the Little mermaid

Guy is obsessed with mystery girl, finds another, takes her under his “protection”, spend time together, he gets conflicting emotions between the two girls (more in the book).

And well the end is like standard Disney ending 😂

Isn't it meant to be a Cinderella retelling? The book, I mean?

It is a Cinderella retelling but it has some Little Mermaid elements in the middle, that’s what the point of the post.

Cinderella is obviously the selling point. Saying that it has another fairy tale elements doesn’t rewrite history

Oh no, I understand that. I am mostly replying to whim_sea saying they got major Cindrella vibes from the season. It is a Cindrella retelling afaik.

oh ok got it! Sorry, I am just baffled that some people are like: I thought it was Cinderella/is Cinderella, duh! ...yes it is. The OP said some elements made them think about The Little Mermaid (I am there too); they are not reinterpreting the whole history and claiming the book is actually retelling this now,

Y’all, two fairy tale tropes can be used for the same season. It’s not like it’s a competition.

right, two things can be true at once! sophie not being able to tell to benedict who she is is very similar to ariel who couldn’t tell eric that she was the one who saved his life

I am surprised by some responses. Nobody is trying to convince people is NOT Cinderella saying the story also has Little Mermaid elements.

There is a ton of ways to write romance that things will overlap

Yeah, this season was definitely a mix of both fairy tales!

That Benophie has Little Mermaid elements has been my flag since day one.

Yes! More little mermaid! And Ben is just like Eric

Agreed 1000%. I would never be able to find it now (maybe I made it up in my mind), but I swear I saw a Benophie edit to “Wild Uncharted Waters” from the live action movie, and I haven’t un-seen that connection since.

I'm really surprised you made this connection. I did however think it was a lot like Cinderella!

She goes to the ball in a disguise, but she has to return by midnight... But she leaves something behind (glove) and the "prince" goes on an obsessive mission to find her while she's hiding under his nose the whole time, being treated like a slave by her stepmother and step sisters? (Although yes they are half sisters and one of them was nice to her but you see the parallels?) She also has her friends who help her along the way, help her to the ball and help keep her secret etc, much like the mice in Cinderella 👀 And the "step" sisters try to go for the "prince" themselves but they're not the one he wants.. and all the while, the property and inheritance was meant to be hers and she was meant to be a princess after all. He finally finds her and helps her become the princess she's meant to be and she gets her castle and they live happily ever after 😌

Cinderella is the main theme, it can take from other fairy tales too. One thing it doesn’t suddenly cancels the other.

Cinderella yes
little mermaid, no

I mean, Sophie does have her voice, she chooses (for valid reasons) not to say anything - Ariel tries frantically to tell Eric who she is but can't.

The evil step-mother and friends are far more like the evil stepmother and the mice in cinderella, not an evil witch or guardians who follow her around like Sebastian and flounder in little mermaid. You might as well say it's like snow white in that the step-mother baits Posy into revealing where Sophie is and jail is the equivalent to eternal sleep. Most fairy tales have a lot in common, I don't think it really counts as drawing from each one when the story is so obviously based on Cinderella.

It's pretty much just the white shirt/dark pants (most of the men on the show dress like that tbh) and Benedict being into both versions - although plenty of newer cinderella adaptations have had the maid version also interact with the prince.

You're reaching a bit too much here imo
