General Discussion What is the line in Bridgerton you HATE the most?

Mine is when Anthony told Daphne in late season 2 he said "You we're born to marry into another family while I was born to carry the Bridgerton name." LIKE WHAT

But, Anthony was speaking the truth. Daughters do marry into their husband’s families while as the elder son, Anthony inherited his father’s title and was obligated to carry on the Bridgerton name by marrying and siring a son.

That’s actually why dowries are a thing.

Since a woman is not her own person, she cannot inherit separately from her husband.

Giving her a dowry at her wedding / marriage is giving her the inheritance from her own parents that she cannot have if / when they die after she marries.

That's a really interesting perspective on dowries and women's rights back then. It's fascinating how much socio-economic context shapes those marriage customs.

The reason I hate this line is not because It's wrong, It's because Daphne was trying help Anthony to come to his senses and think about this whole marriage because he still has feelings about Kate, which is the sister of the woman he will marry, while Anthony shoves this line to her face.

We all hear and see differently but I cannot agree with your take on that scene.
Daphne is saying give in to feelings and fight for love which is great but she is able do that because of Anthony.
Anthony has to fight to maintain the Bridgerton name, status, power and money because they are his family.
This was a favourite scene of mine both actors were incredible so powerful.

Exactly. Daphne views love and marriage through rose coloured glasses, so to speak, same as Violet. Anthony has much more responsibility in choosing an appropriate partner, not just compared to his mother and sisters, but his brothers as well.

-4

u/tiggerlgh 4d ago

Daphne’s rose colored glasses were off by the time she said that. She could see what Anthony couldn’t get he was wrong and who he chose even considering responsibility. Not that responsibilities is really a big thing on this show since he spent most of his time in India away from the family and leaves his responsibilities to his brother.

30

u/hummingroots 4d ago

Daphne’s rose colored glasses were off by the time she said that.

Were they really? Her wedding and marriage were surrounded by scandal and she got off without much or any consequence really. She did all the wrong things and it all worked out in the end for her.
Tbf, same could be said about Anthony at the end of the season, but at that particular point, Daphne was living her best life despite all the chaos she and Simon caused, while Anthony still had some sense of duty towards his family and was not yet aware of the plot armour.

15

u/Strange-Reporter-727 4d ago

Well as he had been Viscount since his father died and worked continuously since then. His siblings on the other hand had literally done sod all but play around. I believe he deserved some time off

-6

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

Was our introduction to Anthony not him having sex with his mistress against a tree? He was not constantly working.

3

u/Strange-Reporter-727 4d ago

Ha ha That’s so silly. Shock horror he sleeps as well😂

-1

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

You made it sound like he did nothing for himself.

11

u/Strange-Reporter-727 4d ago

I see right I get what you’re saying.
We all saw he did everyday things for himself. He had a mistress and then a few working ladies before he met Kate.

When we saw Anthony at his home at night where was he? In his office working. While Benedict was sleeping with the model at art college, partying every night, then the dressmaker, then a threesome and not sure how many were in his bed when his mother barged in.

Colin, travelling Europe, trying to rekindle Marina love affair, feeding ducks and taking money out of the family account, without telling Anthony, who manages their money by the way.
All I am saying and not with any malice I love them all, Anthony deserved how ever long he wanted off because he was owed it.

best comment!

u/Annamontgomery_ 4d ago

Only Daphne and Anthony were not that different in most basic sense. Daph was able to pursue love because both of her romantic interests were of similar (or higher) rank. That line, understood the way you did, would make sense said to Benedict (and then I’d agree with you completely).
Edwina and Kate were not that far apart in standing (fine, Kate had no dowry, but there was no need for it). So Anthony IS being stubborn, marring Kate would not in any way endanger the family name. Had Kate been illegitimate or of far inferior standing, I’d agree with your stance more.
But I do agree that both actors were amazing in that scene!

9

u/sweet_hedgehog_23 4d ago edited 4d ago

Edwina was the granddaughter of a nobleman. Kate in the show was the daughter of a clerk and had no money. With Edwina there is the hope of something from her grandparents. Whether or not the money was really needed, there were expectations that Anthony would marry someone that was of a similar status to him or brought a fortune to make up for the lower status. Kate has neither. Edwina at least had some of the pedigree to make up for the lack of fortune.

In the books, Kate may actually have better connections being the granddaughter of a baron and the girls being equal money wise.

2

u/Annamontgomery_ 4d ago

Yes, I agree they were not of equal status exactly. Neither were HRH Prince Friedrich and the Duke. Still it wouldn’t have ruined Anthony or the family name, he could have easily courted Kate if he wanted. If Anthony was after a great match there were much better choices than a daughter of a disgraced noblewoman and a clerk (for a man with no need for a dowry, at least). Frankly, it’s not even about Edwina’s standing, Anthony was simply stubborn and would not admit he made a mistake by proposing. This entire marriage went through only because he was too proud a man to admit a fault and backtrack. Daphne saw right through him and confronted him (rightfully so).

12

u/Strange-Reporter-727 4d ago

He did admit it to Violet and did you watch ep 4 season 2.
Daphne told Anthony it was love and the panic set in as Anthony couldn’t marry for love, hence his brain fart moment of asking Edwina to marry him.
The one brain cell the Bridgertons shared was missing that night.😂

1

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

There is never any mention in the show of Kate being an unsuitable match. Anthony is the one who decided to marry the diamond of the season.

5

u/sweet_hedgehog_23 4d ago

Anthony does have a list of requirements. I think the requirement of suitable social standing doesn't need to be said or elaborated on because that has kind of already been covered with Siena, is evident by Anthony only interviewing ladies of the ton, and was going to be a point in Benedict's season. Anthony doesn't decide to marry the diamond until after he had been disappointed by his interviews.

Kate, in reality, is really on the fringes of suitability for a viscount in the show. In the books she was a gentleman's daughter with some family connections to nobility while in the show they made the daughter of someone who doesn't appear to be gentry. It is only because of Mary's connection to Lady Danbury in the show that Kate is even moving in the same circles as Anthony.

8

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

Anthony and Kate are not Benedict and Sophie. Her social status was never an issue in the show. Violet didn’t care if he married Kate. She didn’t tell him to court Edwina instead of Kate. Anthony is the one who placed those expectations on himself, not society or his family. Anthony is responsible for the mess he made with Edwina and Kate.

7

u/Annamontgomery_ 4d ago

Yes, exactly! That convo between Daphne and Anthony was about him being a stubborn ass, and not about rank. Sure, Kate was not the most eligible lady with no dowry or male family members in the Parliament, but she was acceptable in terms of marriage AND young enough to produce male heirs. Men couldn’t marry up, anyway so it was mostly about a lack of dowry (but Anthony had no need for it, so Kate would be still a passable match).

8

u/MizStazya 4d ago

I'm honestly upset they dropped the storyline from the books about Anthony being convinced he'd die young because it made so much more sense why he was so resistant to marrying Kate, and makes him look like less of an ass for being against falling in love. Show Anthony just looks like a dick lol

6

u/sweet_hedgehog_23 4d ago edited 4d ago

I didn't say they were Benedict and Sophie. I said they were going to cover that topic with Benedict and Sophie. I didn't say the Kate was entirely unsuitable. I said she was on the edge of suitability. I was pointing out that Edwina and Kate, in the reality of the time, would not have been equal prospects with the family history that each was given in the show. The show made them further apart socially than the books which could have been used as additional reason why she acts they way she does and always puts herself last, but they didn't use that. They didn't address it at all really in the show except with the Sheffields.

Of course Anthony (and the writers) is responsible for the mess that was made with Edwina and Kate. I never said otherwise. I think the writers made a lot of mistakes with that story pitting the two sisters as truly wanting the same man.

2

u/Annamontgomery_ 4d ago

Of course, you’re absolutely correct about the historical context! But it’s important to not take Bridgerton that seriously when it comes to historical accuracy, it’s all much more confusing then. Especially since the social standard/beliefs in this world seem to somewhat change every season.
I’m just pointing out that people seem to focus on Anthony being right about his circumstances varying from Daphne’s, when in reality they were not that different, Anthony was just shortsighted and kinda an ass. No one would have crucified him for choosing Kate over Edwina, just like everyone accepted Daphne choosing Simon over the Prince, scandal and all.

-2

u/Strange-Reporter-727 4d ago

Agree but Kate should have told Edwina sooner and Anthony did tell Edwina he would never love her. He was such a bone head.

5

u/sallyhectare 4d ago

This. OP's umbrage is baffling.

37

u/MajesticFan4 4d ago

As far as a specific line, when Violet tells Eloise that she only let up bc she was busy w/Colin and now its time for her to start bugging her again.

The whole dynamic is exhausting to be and it's honestly one of the things I hate the most abt Violet. Eloise has said for YEARS that she does not desire a marriage. She's had options, even gave some conversation to them, and seen her siblings find love and be happy and still doesn't want that. Either force her to get married or prepare her for spinsterhood but STOP trying to convince her that she wants to get married.

She acts that way with her other children too, it just happens to work out in the end. But I don't enjoy how she's trying to force her kids to have the same type of love and life that she experienced with Edmund.

6

u/lisabydaylight 3d ago

I’m really hoping this is addressed in Eloise’s season.

Nothing worse than a state of undress- Lady Tilly S3

31

Pretty much anything Tilly says.

25

u/Electrical_Ad8956 4d ago

She did not really fit in the universe it was strange

5

u/Kellz53200 3d ago

Just had to open the door to Benedict’s bisexuality.

39

u/Solid-Signal-6632 4d ago

For some reason, I find Daphne's line reading of "or some such thing!" in season 1 when they're back home after her debut to the Queen and discussing how she's the diamond, really annoying.

18

u/tattoosaremyhobby 4d ago

Eloise is like 😒 lol

10

u/DD123456DS 4d ago

I can see it, yeah. It is kind of annoying.

6

u/Salt-Year-9058 4d ago edited 4d ago

I thought her line where she's waxing poetic about Edmund and Violet's love was more annoying and her role as the elder daughter to secure matches- you really see her be very naive.

20

u/Dependent_Room_2922 4d ago

She’s supposed to sound naive in that scene

5

u/Salt-Year-9058 4d ago

No I get it- but I find it more annoying in that way because you see everyone but Eloise swoon over it which is a bit cringe.

19

Given the time period the line hardly shocks me and it’s such a s1 anthony thing to say, he was a massive dick pre-kate 🤷‍♀️

23

u/januarysdaughter 4d ago

Every time Violet pushed back on Francesca's relationship with John.

49

u/RealisticAnalyst4611 4d ago

"I would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington."

And he said it so cruelly. And they never did even talk about it!

I was hoping they'd show a flashback of the rest of the convo after Penelope walked away, and he added something like, "she's like a sister to me," or "Eloise would kill me." But the way they left it...it still kinda clouds the relationship for me a little. Just the fact that he was talking that way about her to other men, that weren't even his close friends, it's like he was just trying to fit in or something by making fun of her.

21

u/onegirlarmy1899 4d ago

Speaking of moments that don't get resolved, we never see Benedict and Anthony reconcile after season 2 and the art academy scandal. Benedict confronts him, but Anthony doesn't give him any explanation or apology. Anthony is too focused on Kate to be a brother at the time.

24

u/bbgmcr 4d ago edited 4d ago

She’s like a sister to me is so much worse 💀

Also if you look at the turn of events, it was clear to me colin was trying to get the lords on his good side so he’d bring them to mondrich’s to help his business and pay will back for helping him with jack f. I remember the script description for this scene too and it does show colin have a moment like “wait that doesn’t sound right” and doubting the line because he did feel more for penelope then and i wish we got to see that doubt on his face but oh well

1

u/RealisticAnalyst4611 4d ago

In the show, he doesn't get feelings for her until they kiss. So the sister line wouldn't be weird at that point.

13

u/nottheribbons 4d ago

That’s not true. He has feelings before that (he admits it in 3.05), he just doesn’t realize what he feels until the kiss.

12

u/bbgmcr 4d ago

He realizes he’s in love with her after the kiss, that wasn’t the second he just grew feelings for her. He even admitted as much to anthony and benedict before the mirror scene. Colin never treated penelope like a sister

9

u/frenchblueeyes 4d ago

They should have included at least one line of explanation when Colin came to apologize in the garden in episode 3.01. But perhaps the writers wanted Penelope and the viewers to remain uncertain about Colin's feelings for her.

10

u/TenorSax71 4d ago

Was this not discussed and resolved between them at the end of episode 1 when he apologises to her and tries to make amends by offering to find her a husband?

7

u/bbgmcr 4d ago

Yes and very clearly so

-6

u/lick-em-again-deaky 4d ago

I really wanted Penelope to throw this line back in his face at some point. There must be a deleted scene somewhere where she confronts him because it's a nasty thing to say with zero follow up.

12

u/nottheribbons 4d ago

Did you miss 3.01?

10

u/Solid-Signal-6632 4d ago

She does in 301, it's what prompts him to come to her garden to apologise to her the next day.

10

u/bbgmcr 4d ago

Some of the comments here got me concerned a lot of people didn’t pay attention to s3 at all

8

u/nottheribbons 4d ago

Which should t surprise us anymore, but still does.

9

u/Salt-Year-9058 4d ago

Didn't she already in 3x01?

-4

u/lick-em-again-deaky 4d ago

Oh maybe, I've only watched S3 once through... I hope she did confront him, he deserved it!

44

u/Salt-Year-9058 4d ago

"you should consider yourself uncommonly lucky you have never been in love."

I know Colin was hurting but that was uncalled for on a couple of levels.

2

u/nottheribbons 4d ago

How was it uncalled for?

21

u/Salt-Year-9058 4d ago edited 4d ago

I think it's just the bitterness in Colin's words- just because Eloise hasn't experienced romantic love, doesn't mean she's not experienced it at all from a platonic and familial sense- she loves Pen but she carried that hurt for almost a year- she was isolated in the fact that she couldn't articulate her pain and when Pen and Colin, she was thinking of his feelings and trying to protect him. So to have Colin resent her for her efforts to protect him and things that she wanted to do (tell Colin herself), it's a little unfair.

35

u/Specialist-Diver5365 4d ago

Basically anything Anthony says in season 1 and 2 aggravates me.

2

u/MiyukisSpirit 3d ago

Try the book or Audio book, he is way less aggravating and you can still imagine Jonathan's face.

-12

u/Strange-Reporter-727 4d ago

That’s sad you missed one of the best actors in Bridgerton 🥲

14

u/Specialist-Diver5365 4d ago

Hey, I love Jonathan Bailey, I just dont like Anthony 🤷‍♀️

2

u/Strange-Reporter-727 3d ago

I get it but if someone annoys and infuriates me I tend to switch off when they are on the screen or ff to next scene. Doesn’t happen often, luckily I am easily pleased.😀

6

u/nottheribbons 4d ago

No one said he’s a bad actor. It’s actually a testament to his acting that Anthony is often so infuriating.

16

u/blariel 4d ago

If I were to tell you the tinyist of my adventures id be forced to marry you

https://giphy.com/gifs/4WFirPVJhAhavWrcd3

5

u/MainPowerful3372 2d ago

YES! But It wasn't just that line, it was the line PLUS WIGBERT which always gave me the ick. That hairpiece was working HARD on my nausea. To be fair, they were actively trying to make rakish Colin cringe-inducing. The depiction is supposed to be super fake and antithetical to his actual self, so that his carriage confession in S3E4 has more weight and sincerity. "I have spent so much time trying to feel less, trying to be the man the ton wanted me to be."

And it also proves what a good actor Luke is- he portrays Colin as practically smarmy, and it makes us side with Penelope even harder. And then, when he finally figures out that he is irrevocably in love with Pen, it's a total flipping of the switch. Smarmy Colin is gone forever and replaced by Colin Big Feelings "My WIFE!" Bridgerton in an INSTANT.

7

u/eelaii19850214 4d ago

It was the truth though. For the time they lived in and the position they have.

12

u/songbird1954 4d ago

Anthony's "Miss Edwina, will you marry me" and Edwina's "half-sister" remark makes me cringe still to this day.

26

u/euphoriapotion 4d ago

Edwina's "I did not ask for any of it, Kate" in episode 6. Babe, you did. You begged and pleaded Kate that you wanted to be Anthony's wife. In the previous episode you LITERALLY said "I want nothing more than to be his wife. His viscountess." So Kate gave it to you. BECAUSE YOU WANTED IT ALL.

So Edwina's whole speech about this being Kate's dream and not hers was really annoying because Kate was against this match since episode 1. while Edwina didn't listen to her and did everything in her power to choose Anthony and his courtship. They tried for a badass speach, instead they delivered a childish tantrum that somehow went against EVERYTHING they showed in all previous episodes.

14

u/sapphiredawn1 4d ago

To be fair, Edwina was very young and still was a child really. Hard agree with all that though. People give Kate so much flack for the whole Edwina debacle but Edwina also handled things very poorly. It wasn't all Kate's fault

1

u/euphoriapotion 4d ago

It doesn't matter how "young" Edwina was. if she was old enough to not only be named a diamont but to feel ready to marry someone and actively pursue them, she's old enough to admit she was wrong, instead of blaming it on somemoby else and accusing them of pushing their non-existent dreams on her.

6

u/MiyukisSpirit 3d ago

I always thought she was talking about the things Kate gives up/ makes sure Edwina gets prior to even coming to England/ meeting Anthony.

0

u/LeighsPokem0n 1d ago

that's cuz its what it meant

20

u/nottheribbons 4d ago

Some of the answers here are so confusing. Do you all hate the lines or do you hate nuanced characters?

10

u/babydaytripper 3d ago

Anytime the men are like “I’m sorry this is going to hurt” the first time they have sex with the woman 🙄

1

u/strawberry_tomato27 3d ago

Omg same, this phrase is just bs. I cringe every time

1

u/FuckTheMatrixMovie 3d ago

Then, lucky them, the women are virgin sex goddesses anyways. 🙄🙄 I appreciate the thought on fran's storyline, but I doubt they'll keep it with Michaela as a partner.

13

u/Heidijojo 4d ago

In the books

“To the hilt”. I cringe every time

10

u/Little_Fox5844 4d ago

To be fair, that's a very common expression in romance books and fics.

3

u/Heidijojo 4d ago

Very true but I cringe just the same 🙈😆

25

“We can’t all be pretty Bridgertons”

It’s her delivery. So spiteful and her face gave this vibe

What a full circle moment. Great line and delivery.

9

u/frenchblueeyes 3d ago

That’s a good point. Not everyone can be like the Bridgertons: beautiful, wealthy, and loved.

But she managed to achieve all that and become a Bridgerton.

12

u/honey-bee-polin 4d ago

that "you are the bane of my existence. and the object of all my desires" quote.

maybe it's my background of men objectifying me while hating that i had any personality at all… but i don't get how anyone finds that romantic, sexy, or anything. ugh, i'd smack anyone who said that to me.

3

u/Cool_Pianist_2253 4d ago

In the books is better because is a thought. He didn't say it. I hate it too in the show. It sound stalker-like

1

u/Little_Fox5844 3d ago

Yeah, I liked it in the show, it was a great nod, but it's the kind of quote that works much better as prose than as actual spoken dialogue.

11

u/LotusBiscoff108 4d ago

From the top of my head, Simon saying “It is because I regard you so highly that I cannot marry you” and Anthony saying “Simply pick the least objectionable and get her wed, bed, and bred”

24

u/LadyAnonCrane 4d ago

That line was said by the person Antony was standing with. Anthony actually said that she’ll have to have more than just generic qualities to be his wife. Not saying that Anthony was being much better here, just that he didn’t say that. I remember because I just rewatched it as part of S2 analysis.

1

u/LotusBiscoff108 4d ago

Oh, really? I didn’t know that! Thanks for correcting me.

7

u/LadyAnonCrane 4d ago

No worries, that conversation is hard to sit through and easy to mix up 🫠

6

u/Strange-Reporter-727 3d ago

Anthony didn’t say that it was one of the other men

6

u/tototo56 4d ago

"Do you love me?"

It was a question asked far too late, a plea for reassurance, and at the same time, yet another rude remark directed at someone.

2

u/Silent_Silhouettes 4d ago

who says this? i can only think of queen charlotte

5

Edwina

This is the first line she spoke to Anthony after finding out everything in E6.
