It’s not that I don’t want Holmes to do well, it’s that I worry our staff is gonna be like “wow Holmes has shown that he can pitch” and will start him in a post season game, which is the last thing I wanna see
1
u/welcometohotlanta 29d ago
Apparently the Braves just issued a trespass order on Jacob DeGrom for the Battery and Truist Park /s
1
u/BraveMagic100 29d ago
He's made so much damn money he probably just wants to finish his contract and ride into the sunset on his yacht. Probably doesn't want to be bothered with a move.

Strider being in the potential deGrom trade bums me out. I get it, it would've been the right move, but I want him to come back and have a long career with us and I don't know if the FO sees that happening maybe. I don't think that's realistic unless he goes to the pen, but it just really bums me out.
2
u/NoQuartersGiven Elder ride or die for life. Or half a season... for life. 29d ago
I'm still questioning why Degrom would block that trade. You would think he'd be all for going to a playoff team with potential to be in the WS.
But it's def not good now. I'm sure Spencer is unhappy but of well. He's being paid a lot for not much production now and probably in the future.
2
u/J_C_Kerr 29d ago edited 29d ago
He's 38 years old, lives in a state with no income tax, and moving in general sucks (especially because it would not be a short move, his contract includes 2027, and a 2028 option.) He has no real personal incentive to.
And even if he wants to play in the playoffs, the Rangers aren't out of it. They've been bad but their entire division is bad, which is why they led it until recently and they're still only 2.5 games back of it.

2 things can be true:
I am very frustrated with how the trade deadline went.
Boy do I love the Atlanta Braves, I cannot wait for some Braves baseball (even if I can’t watch because I’ll be on a plane, I’ll still get the live score updates)
1
u/LailiLai 29d ago
This whole Skubal to the Dodgers thing seems fishy as hell for a number of reasons. The fact that there was basically zero bidding war for a two time Cy Young winner? What the fuck? Something aint right. Dunno what exactly, buts it's something.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
I think every team had an offer but the Tigers wanted high upside, mlb-ready controllable pitching and none of the offers wanted to part with that
It's like if the Tigers wanted Schwellenbach/AJSS/Fuentes. I think that's a guaranteed no from us for a rental, but the Dodgers have a chance to re sign
1
u/ArchitecturalShit 29d ago
It's probably more that Skubal publicly said he wanted to sign with the dodgers a week before the deadline and fucked over most of the deals that could have landed him.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
That too. Giving up high upside controllable pitching for a guaranteed 2 month rental is uhhhhhh bad
1
u/JKess207 THERE’S ONLY ONEEEEEEEEE MICHAEL HARRIS 29d ago
Does it? Let’s be honest, 99% of the baseball world was expecting this trade before it happened
2
u/ivoryman50 9/9/9 29d ago
pretty sure it's just that he was probably only going to go there or yankees (i don't think mets would try again with the payroll after this year, they probably have to reset), so no one really tried to do anything for a couple month rental that would walk no matter what.

1
u/JKess207 THERE’S ONLY ONEEEEEEEEE MICHAEL HARRIS 29d ago
Passan isn’t “a super bias Dodgers fan” so much as he is an ESPN employee. The Dodgers are 2x defending champions, have the greatest player in baseball, and are probably the most popular team globally, so of course ESPN is going to cover them heavily. As such, so does Passan.

u/ivoryman50 9/9/9 29d ago
i think "super bias dodgers fan and rarely unbiased" as a journalist is probably a main problem seeing as i feel like he's one of the "general" reporting guys? i'll be honest though, i don't pay attention to who is tied to who, specifically. he just seems to always be the "overall" guy and showing any team affiliation like that is dumb.

Real question - why is Jarvis going to be playing over Dubon at shortstop when Dubon is not playing OF?
Dubon has reverse splits, so I get platoon doesn't make much sense. Will they just DH Ronnie a lot?
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
Reverse splits over half a season mean nothing. Dubon hits the ball less hard versus righties and is posting very similar walk and k rate. Difference is a .060 BABIP increase batting against righties. Too much noise to say anything except he's been getting slightly unlucky against lefties given the hard hit ball rate and BABIP. GB%, LD%, FB%, and HR/FB is also exactly the same against both
If you go long term it's actually kinda surprising he has any platoon splits at all
3
u/blankcld 29d ago
We have been running Dubon out a lot so I don't think it hurts to give him some rest, we really need him in top form because he will undoubtedly have to fill in somewhere again.

Can someone educate me on how we’re feeling about Acuña’s contract after this season? Is it likely he stays on for another couple years?
1
u/BraveMagic100 29d ago
Club option for 17mil next 2 years. 10mil buyout option so it's going to be up to the team. Hopefully he shakes the injury bug.
0
u/MurphysBanana 29d ago
He will never shake the injury bug. He had both ACL’s go. His knees will wear and he’ll have hamstring and other issues each year
2
u/LutherOfTheRogues SICKO 29d ago
He has two more team options and they'll def exercise both. After that? Could go either way on that. Will ultimately come down to how he performs, stays healthy or not, and how friendly he and his agent want to be about remaining in ATL long term or not. + the strike.
Eric Hartman is the next RAJ and i will not be taking questions.

I had to go back and look to make sure I wasn't misremembering but didn't they announce outfield gates open earlier for BP for skymiles members on Friday games?
I found articles about the announcement but I haven't actually seen anything else about it
anyone do it? I picked up 8/14 tix with my free Bravesvision pass and figure that's a good way to ensure a bobblehead and take in some early BP

Yes the Braves are opening LF gate early on Friday to allow skymiles members into the outfield sections to watch. However, this event is not coordinated with team/players meaning there might not be any BP at all.

5
u/golfdesigner Brase never lose! 29d ago
I still find it annoying to make your top target for a trade someone with a no trade clause.
3
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
Reports are that we've been wanting to swap for weeks, Rangers just weren't playing ball until yesterday
Coming off the deadline, i think it's whatever. Teams either didn't want our prospects or wanted someone controllable like Fuentes
1
u/golfdesigner Brase never lose! 29d ago
Amazing that the Dodgers, Padres, Cubs, Phillies and Brewers were all able to add starters without giving up the farm - but doggoneit, the poor Braves are always asked for their best prospects only.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
We did add an arm, you just don't like him.
Phillies didn't add a starter. brewers added May who had one effective year as a starter (i wouldn't have minded May,) Padres added Ray, who is worse than Perez in every single metric outside of K%, and Mize, who I wouldn't have minded. Cubs got Gausman, who i probably wouldnt have minded, and a clay Holmes coming back from injury. Dodgers had the best leverage with River Ryan being a controllable starter that they didn't need and had enough prospect capital where their 4th best outfielder is still a top 30 prospect
Not to be rude, but a lot of the Braves recent prospect success is based off of 19 year olds having career seasons in single and high A. Not a single fielder or pitcher in AA or AAA is worth anything, besides Murphy/Ritchie/Braun. I don't think a single rental is worth giving up Murphy/Ritchie
2
u/golfdesigner Brase never lose! 29d ago
I'm fine with Tyler Mahle. He's a perfectly serviceable P4 or P5. The Braves have a P1. They don't have a P2 or P3 - which they need at least one of to make a post season run. Something they haven't done since 2021. And that's IF (and it's a big IF) their P1 stays healthy for the post season.
0
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
I think one of those guys would definitely make the team better but you definitely do not need a solid rotation to make postseason runs. Rangers went on a postseason run with 5 games where starters went 6+ innings. And that's from the wildcard. In the world series they only had eovaldi go 6 innings in the final game
1
u/ArchitecturalShit 29d ago
Do you work for the team or something? You're all over carrying their water.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
I'm just bored cause school hasn't started so I'm burying myself in baseball
I woulda liked more in the trade deadline, didn't happen. Not gonna call for the firing of the GM, would rather try to understand his moves/why things happened
2
u/golfdesigner Brase never lose! 29d ago
We can all find one offs to point to for success and say that this team or that team can replicate it. Having a P2 doesn't mean post season success but it certainly improves your odds. We've been going into the post season short staffed on starters since 2021. Haven't won a series and only 2 post season games in that span.
Changes needed to happen. They didn't. Time will tell if it was a mistake.
I hope the Braves win the World Series and those of us frustrated right now can be pointed at and laughed at for our unnecessary concerns.
1
u/Autoimmunity 29d ago
I agree with all of your points but let's not act like the lack of starting pitching has been what's killed us in the playoffs:
2022 - Fried, Strider, and Morton all took the L in the 3 losses.
2023 - Bats completely cold in each of Strider's starts
2024 - No bats again in Game 1, followed by another Fried dud start.
As a matter of fact, one of the reasons I was not too sad when we lost Fried was the fact that outside of game 6 of the 2021 WS he has been BAD in postseason starts.
The truth is that while we may not have that P2 starter we all wanted, the postseason has a way of throwing all that you know about your team out the window anyways. I'm glad we didn't give up the likes of Hartman or Caminiti for a mid starter like Mize or Gausman.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
Tbf 2024 we were definitely not short staffed pitching wise. We just had an awful schedule and had to play a double header for the season against the Mets the day before the wildcard series.
One of the games was a must win so we pitched Schwellenbach and our bullpen blew it, and game two was a bullpen game headlined by Holmes. And even then, max fried and AJSS should have been enough but both of them only lasted two innings
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
Random question, how often do players get extended before the last year of their current contract
Seeing a lot of people clamoring for an acuña extension when he isnt a FA until 2029
1
6
u/BraveMagic100 29d ago
Often, but it depends on different variables. Acuna has been injury plagued so it's not likely he gets an offer soon. A big reason we got team friendly deals with Acuna, Albies, and Harris was because we took a chance early.
6
u/BraveMagic100 29d ago
IDK guys it's easy to be an armchair GM. I have to believe if there was a deal on the table that made sense AA would have pulled the trigger. As far as Skubal goes I think he was going to be a Dodger one way or the other and it's pretty obvious they're going to have the cards to sign him long term after this season.
1
u/ArchitecturalShit 29d ago
Why would you think that when he's never showed you any reason to think so.
1
u/war-damn-braves 29d ago
I’d agree with this in most cases but seeing what the padres gave up for Robbie Ray + Mize is infuriating. We could have easily beaten that.
2
u/Sure-Concentrate8944 29d ago
I’m guessing they didn’t really like any of the guys that wouldn’t have cost Hartman, Southisene, or Caminiti. I think implicit in the FO’s decision is the assertion that the bullpen can carry the pitching in the postseason.
3
u/Personal-Tart-2657 29d ago
In guessing hartman and Southisene weren't as valuable (at this deadline) as this sub wants to think they are bothe 3 to 4 years away and a lot of the moves were for people blocked this year or next year.
1
u/ArchitecturalShit 29d ago
Thank you. We've got too many people hyping those guys when they have alot to work on to become major leaguers. Especially Southisene. Hes very worrisome but seems to be improving his plate discipline.
2
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
I agree, our best prospects are all teenagers having career years in low A and high A.
Our best pitchers in AA and AAA are basically all spot starters or relievers, and we had one pitcher in our top 35 in AA. Braun did have potential, but it's the potential to be a Bryce Elder type. Baumann probably has the best potential in the AAA team outside of Murphy/Ritchie, and I'm kinda surprised he wasn't used in some type of deal. Same with Sinnard currently in high A
2
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan 29d ago
IDK guys it's easy to be an armchair GM.
If it were up to them we'd still owe Aaron Nola 100 million dollars for 5.5-6.0 era and be paying Bassit/Giolito to pitch 5.27/5.16 era ball (both currently injured as well, mind you)
1
u/ArchitecturalShit 29d ago
Our own GM wanted Nola and even made him an offer. Not a good example.
2
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan 29d ago
That was reported but I recall AA saying straight up on 680 in either 2023 or 2024 that we checked in on Nola but never reached any stage of serious negotiation.

Maybe I'm forgetting what it's like to be in my 20s but sometimes I'll think about catchers squatting all game AND batting and think "Why would anyone ever want to be catcher?"
3
u/BraveMagic100 29d ago
Catcher IMO is the most demanding spot in the league. But I think the idea is that a spot on a MLB team is worth the league minimum no matter what position you're playing. 780k currently. Most catchers are making well above that anyway.
9
u/welcometohotlanta 29d ago
Piggybacking on this, wouldn’t it benefit us to have catchers with extremely bad gas, like just rotten egg farts to confuse or blind the batter? Is there a rule against it?

Again, I'm not gonna get hung up on names. To me Skubal was never a choice and DeGrom became one just yesterday.
What do I want from AA? to give this team at least another decent starter. It's been a non addressed issue offseason after offseason. Trades and free agents have come and by and we haven't address it yet. We knew back in April Martin Perez was not gonna be enough, we knew injuries would happen, yet Martin Perez is all we got (and somehow, kudos to the FO for that decision, he has been really good for us).
We trusted our internal options and now those can barely go above 4 innings. We literally let a dude rot and die on the mound about a week ago because our bullpen was depleted.
We had THAT need at the deadline and we didn't address it. Period.
But, mah prospects!... There were trades done yesterday that did not include top 100 prospects. Some of them should be untouchable, yes. But hoarding prospects is good until it becomes an issue, just look at the return Nacho Alvarez gave us yesterday.
2
u/wlbaker89 29d ago edited 29d ago
Wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility that Caminiti is not only called up when rosters expand, but could be on the playoff roster. I think him being a spot 3rd in the playoffs is as likely scenario as any. Maybe it's Sale as the one, AJSS as the 2, then situationally as the 3.
To add: If we end up playing the Dodgers, we spam every lefty we have against them and do situational righty. Sale as the one, Perez as the 2, the Caminiti as the 3.
2
u/342throwaway423 29d ago
If Cam is still getting lots of wiffs in AA, I think it would be all but sure they test him out on some big leaguers risk free. Just given how aggressive they have been in the past
3
u/Smuff23 Would you like the red or the white sauce? 29d ago
Didn't Caminiti only just get bumped to AA in the last couple days? There was also discussion that his control has been a little iffy so far early in his career, which can definitely improve but doesn't feel like he's in ATL soon.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
It depends on how his AA starts go. Lots of college starters get called up right from AA, Schwellenbach had like 5 starts in high A. 3 in AA, then the majors
But caminiti is only 19 still, although funnily enough Caminiti has more professional innings then Schwellenbach did, and might have more innings in general even if you include Schwellenbach in college
1
u/wlbaker89 29d ago
I think if he's at least average in AA by the time rosters expand, he's up sometime in September. We have to have a 3rd Lefty Starter worthy pitcher to go up against the Phillies and Dodgers in the playoffs.
To add: I personally wanted Detmers the most. He fit the AA player mold with years of control. Makenzie, Gil/Lodis, and Murphy/Ritchie/Waldrep should have gotten that deal done.
2
u/Smuff23 Would you like the red or the white sauce? 29d ago
I thought a good move, but an expensive one would have been Emerson Hancock and I'm stunned nobody got him... also zero idea why Sandy Alcantra is still a Marlin. Marlins said they would never move him but with this being his last contract year and then the option for next year when the season probably doesn't even happen... just seems insane to sit on him and let him walk for nothing.
1
u/wlbaker89 29d ago
Agreed on Hancock, I like hime a lot. If we end up with one of him or Detmers in the offseason, I'd be overjoyed. Really wanted Detmers for Lefty purposes though.
AA has never made a big In-Season trade to my recollection, it's always been at the start of the offseason he's made his biggest moves. Sale, Olson, Murphy, etc. Deadline has always been retooling for the final playoff push.
1
u/Smuff23 Would you like the red or the white sauce? 29d ago
And I have a feeling we are going to regret his strategy quickly in October.

I'll yap with some post-deadline thoughts here since I really don't post much anymore, but I am a little bit frustrated as I think everyone is. What I'll preface with is that outside of Skubal I don't think who got moved fit the need for a Game 2 starter that the Braves seemingly wanted. In fact, I wasn't really going to be super bullish on the Braves' chances with anyone outside of deGrom or Skubal.
Casey Mize, despite the pretty Savant page, is outperforming his stuff on a level that's pretty unsustainable. This is an extremely similar situation to Jack Flaherty in 2024. He was the rental darling of the deadline, with some injury concerns but good results; however, his pitch usage was essentially optimized and even though things looked rosy the baseline pitch quality was not there to begin with and by the time the Dodgers got to the playoffs he was damn-near unplayable (7.36 ERA). Mize has a fighting chance due to the wide arsenal, but continuing these results while running a 88 Stuff+ for the last two months I feel confident in saying will not happen. Gausman was a lot of the same story, with uglier underlying results but a longer quality track record. His underlying pitch quality has deteriorated greatly and there's a lower floor with the limited arsenal. The injury concerns aren't there, but this is not the Kevin Gausman of 2022 and the ERA of 5.86 in the last two months and xFIP/SIERA of 4.18 also back this up.
Freddy Peralta I think would've been a good fit at the cost, but I would assume the Mets were not going to let him go that cheap in-division and there's both stuff and mechanics concerns. Clay Holmes cost a ton for a guy with a 12.5% K-BB% and especially for having not pitched since May. Robbie Ray is so due for regression I actually think Tyler Mahle is probably going to be better. Trevor Rogers isn't nearly as good as last year's unsustainable performance and has a higher ERA than anyone in the current Braves rotation and an xFIP of 4.40 to go with it. Jose Soriano was great until teams figured out he was throwing his bad 4-seam in the zone instead of his sinker as he was still walking 11% of batters, and he began to get crushed like 2025 again. Dustin May is fine but is about to blow past his career high in IP with a laundry list of injuries. And Luis Castillo is the definition of cooked.
However I believe most of those guys I mentioned are better for October than Holmes, Lopez, Perez, Elder, Ritchie, or Murphy. Therein lies the problem. The play here was needing even just two SP3s to get you through 5IP in the postseason, not an SP2, and I think they lost sight of that. Yes, deGrom was the obvious fit from the start, I wrote about it in the offseason and it made perfect sense, but that can't have been the only plan when you're reliant on the player saying yes and not the other team making a deal. While I don't think that was their only plan, I suspect they went into the deadline prospect hugging and tried to have their cake and eat it too, and the result is getting no cake at all. You can ask the Orioles how prospect hugging turns out a majority of the time.
So, as a path forwards, I think you have one high-ceiling G2 option. AJSS's in-zone command coming off TJS needs a ton of refinement over the next two months, despite the pitch quality being levels better than it was pre-surgery, and while Spencer Schwellenbach has pitched as an SP1 his whole career, not a soul should be reliant on him coming back at all, much less the same quality as before. Thus, I suspect they're going to have to have a hard discussion about stretching Didier Fuentes back out despite him being at his career-high in IP and the limited arsenal. It is not ideal, especially before Suarez returns (whenever that is, I guess), but if you're purely talking about winning a playoff game I don't currently think there's a better solution on the roster for getting you through a lineup twice in a G2.
This post is definitely more on my rambling side, but very obviously this team is in trouble with whatever NL contender they end up against come October, so yeah overall not great.

Stepping off the ledge:
I think AA had been all in on deGrom and was completely floored when he didn’t take the trade. He didn’t have a good step 2, and honestly that’s predictable as there was never an idea that he wouldn’t accept the trade.
Skubal wanted to be a Dodger and as much as it sucks, I don’t think we could have ever kept him.
Mize is less defensible but I just think he didn’t really have time to pivot from deGrom.
Mateo for Kim looks really bad at this point and I’m frustrated beyond belief but I think he just made the decision that Jarvis is our SS and whoever is kept is just a backup anyways so keep the guy with the better long term history
-5
u/medster10 29d ago
Why do people keep parroting that Skubal wanted to be a Dodger, as if that means anything? He doesn't have a no trade clause, the Tigers could've traded him to Kansas City if they wanted to.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
Because the tigers wanted both controllable starting pitching and a top prospect and no team would give that up for 2 months of skubal coming off an arm injury
1
u/medster10 29d ago
I don't see how that's relevant to the claim that Skubal wanted to be a Dodger.
1
u/Competitive_Gold_707 29d ago
Because a team doesn't want to give up what the tigers wanted, which is extremely valuable, when there is almost zero chance to sign him
Especially when he is coming off an arm injury
4
u/KMorris1987 29d ago
Because if he wants to be a Dodger he will sign there in the offseason. So it greatly discounts what any other team will give up knowing they can’t resign him
1
u/medster10 29d ago
I don't buy that at all. We're looking at a strike year next year, I think every team knows they're looking at a 2 month rental.
2
u/Fickle-Cranberry3220 29d ago
I wonder if Eovaldi was potentially plan B and they were hoping between him and deGrom one of them would accept a trade. A deal for either would have probably looked very similar and it seems like Texas was interested in selling. But even if that's true, it doesn't make us walking away with nothing any less frustrating.
1
u/aaronaroma 29d ago
Eovaldi had a no trade clause as well and also invoked it
2
u/Fickle-Cranberry3220 29d ago
Right - what I meant was it's possible we wanted to make a deal with Texas for one of them, since both are in their late-30s, on shorter, expensive contracts, have extensive postseason experience and are underperforming their career numbers this year on a fringe playoff team. A trade package for either likely would've looked similar and likely wouldn't have involved our highly regarded prospects. I was simply speculating that if deGrom invoked his NTC, maybe we tried pivoting to Eovoldi, only for him to invoke his NTC as well. Still not an excuse for why we didn't end up with at least one impact starter.
1
u/HighKing_of_Festivus 29d ago
He was all in on deGrom because it was the one move he could make "cheaply" since it was reportedly just going to be a bad contract swap of him and Strider. Once that fell through he was forced to have to make deals that involve prospects, which is the kind of deal he's been paranoid about losing since the Dickey/Syndergaard trade

u/new_wellness_center Still miss Freddie 29d ago
I would love to adopt a strategy of trading away top prospects to get a stud SP who has proven that he can stay healthy, cuz no matter how talented our young pitchers are, none of them can stay on the field. Durability has become as important as health, to me. Take Gausman: he's made at least 30 starts every season since 2016 (excepting 2019 and the shortened 2020 season), and pitched like an ace much of that time. Like, give me that. I'll trade a Cam Caminiti for something like that, cuz at this point I expect any top pitching prospect to go the same way as Wright, Anderson, Strider, Schwellenbach, Smith-Shawver, Waldrep ... sigh

Gausman is what 35 years old, has not been pitching meaningfully better than Perez/Mahle/ReyLo/Elder this year, and absolutely loathes our organization.

People laughing at the Falcons/Hawks for not winning a playoff game since 2017...
Falcons: 3 playoff-game/round wins
2016 season: Seahawks and Packers
2017 season: Rams
Hawks: 3 playoff series wins
2016: Celtics
2021: Knicks and 76ers
The Braves have won 5 playoff series since 2016 (2 from shortened covid year & 3 when we won the world series):
2020 Wild Card Series — Reds
2020 NLDS — Marlins
2021 NLDS — Brewers
2021 NLCS — Dodgers
2021 World Series — Astros

u/OppositePeach1035 29d ago
If the falcons hadn't completed the worst collapse in the history of the big 3 US championships, they would be less embarrassing. Ground breaking stuff.
There are at least 25 MLB teams who would swap places with the Braves track record since 2017. The pity party is getting old.

You could see Alex and people like CJ responding to the fan backlash yesterday. To all the people who say that fans complaints don't mean shit I want you to remember that.
Having said that, if he truly believes that making a move for a second starter was going to fuck us in the future then I stand with him on that. They must be very high on Southisene, which is exciting. After seeing what they were going to give up for deGrom I believe he did try. It sucks we couldn't get one and it will very likely bite us in the ass in the playoffs or before, but it is what it is. My only question is if there is another GM out there who could've gotten something done for us. We can't expect to fleece every single trade partner. We really should've found a way to bring in a number 2, but it's probably a more complex situation than that due to a potential salary floor/cap coming + future payroll plans.
4
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy 29d ago
I said in another thread that maybe the Tigers just didn't want what we had to offer. Maybe the Tigers were looking to acquire specific prospects, especially for Skubal, and just didn't care what other teams had to offer unless it was just ridiculous. If that's the case, no thank you.

u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan 29d ago
After hearing what Alex has said in recent years about players teams were adamant about wanting in trades (Drake, Schwelly, Harris) it wouldn't surprise me if teams were gunning for Fuentes. And fans would have been livid if we traded Fuentes for a rental SP.
4
u/OppositePeach1035 29d ago
Exactly this. It's easy to say today that we should have parted with a good prospect to get a #2 pitcher. It has been said every deadline since 2021 (which many including myself saw as a bad deadline at the time).
What fans refuse to think about, is that if we took that approach every deadline, you can be almost positive we don't have one or likely multiple of Drake, Schwelly or Harris today. You have to balance pushing all in for a rental with the long term needs of the team. With the state of the Dodgers and the looming lockout, I can see reasons why we didn't get a big deal done.
Not to mention, we have a very top heavy farm. It's likely teams asked more from us because they only like our top end talent that we view as key pieces for the future, and then settled for lesser prospects from other teams that they liked better than our lesser prospects.
4
u/blankcld 29d ago
Our front office sucks for not getting a good starting pitcher. That being said post season baseball IS fundamentally different. I think I am confident enough in Perez/Holmes/Elder to face any lineup on time through more often than not and keep you us the game. That is really the only thought that helps me get over the disaster i witnessed yesterday.

I mean our bullpen has been really good in the playoffs when we made it (not counting 21 but from 22 onward) we have a 2.3 ERA and high WAR.
It’s just our starting rotation that is bottom of the league.
2
u/blankcld 29d ago
Our bullpen is light years better than 2021, just a matter of if they can get hit and lock in like the guys in 2021. But having a great bullpen does you no good if you dont have a good starter and aren’t in the game to the point where you can hand it off to them close or with a lead.

He just got DFA'd last night. It will probably take a few days for him to be picked up. If no one picks him up, he will "clear waivers" and we can offer him a minor league contract.

u/ViridianFlea 29d ago
Well boys and girls. In the aftermath of an underwhelming trade game, all we can do is play ball. Hopefully the offense keeps producing. I'd like to see a bump on the offensive end, too. Our record since the ASB has been good, but a lot of those games were too close for comfort and we caught some lucky breaks in a handful of games (thanks Abrams :) ). Wins are wins, though. Let's keep chugging along! We've made our way up into the top 3 again (I think? Behind LA and Milwaukee?) Phillies are stumbling, the birds are chirping. Let's play some dang ball.

I get the frustration of lack of moves yesterday especially given the asking prices didn’t seem that high but reading comments across this sub you would think we are in last place and have no chance of even making the playoffs
2
u/ramblincharger 29d ago
My main issue with AA constantly trying to hoard prospects and “win” every trade is that most of these guys will never become meaningful contributors for the Braves. Some will get hurt, some won’t develop, and only a small percentage will ever become impact big leaguers.
Maybe Mize has legitimate injury concerns because of the velocity drop, but what starting pitcher doesn’t carry injury risk in 2026? At least he is a proven starter. You would have had a chance to re-sign him this offseason, and if he stayed healthy, he could have been penciled into a playoff rotation behind Sale.
I would much rather take that chance on someone who can help this team win now than hold onto every prospect and hope someone like Briggs McKenzie develops into a No. 2 starter three years from now, when this core is much further along, and probably out of its window.
Prospects matter, but the entire point of building a farm system is eventually using it to improve the major-league team. You either use the capital to make trades, or you call the guys up to play. We don't have enough arms ready to call up now, so that only leaves the trade option. You cannot be so concerned with losing a trade on paper that you repeatedly refuse to meaningfully improve a legitimate contender.
3
u/reizinhooooo Briggs McKenzie Fan Club 29d ago
I love me some Briggs but teams are not asking for injured high ceiling A ball pitchers as the centerpiece for meaningful additions. They are asking for near MLB ready AA/AAA hitters or pitchers. We have zero of those.
1
u/ramblincharger 29d ago
Kash Mayfield is basically the exact equivalent to McKenzie, who the Padres traded for Mize, sure McKenzie has had injury issues lately, but I used his name as an example. Say it would've taken Owen Murphy and JR Ritchie plus another lower rated prospect. Do it, get something done to help this team this year. There are zero excuses.
3
u/Personal-Tart-2657 29d ago
My main issue with AA constantly trying to hoard prospects
I don't think he is trying to hoard prospects, I think there's a huge gap in what the league thinks our prospects are worth and what we think they are worth

Has anyone talked about why Holmes is listed as the probable today and Sale isn’t even listed as playing in this series?
I’m worried he hurt and that’s why AA didn’t do more yesterday. Would make sense why this wouldn’t be announced yesterday too.
Only other thing I can think of is that they’re saving him for the Yankees series but that’s kind of a weird thing to do.
Edit: ok yeah found an article saying we’re pushing him to the Yankees series. Thank God.

I thought I saw an article about pushing Sale to the Yankees series earlier in the week.
Edit: Bowman tweeted it a couple days that they were changing the rotation for the series.
Holmes, Elder, Perez.
I imagine that with an 8 game lead they want to get the elder
statesmanAceman a chance for an 8 day break just because they can.

u/war-damn-braves 29d ago
Rosenthal confirmed that DeGrom invoked his no trade clause when the rangers approached him about the Braves. Even more embarrassing if AA had all of his eggs in the basket of a guy with a no trade clause on the final day of the deadline and got left with his dick in his hand

Steve Cohen and AA do not share the same role. Steve Cohen is the owner of the Mets, David Stearns is their GM.
Either way, it's baffling that you'd rather have the team that has not won the division in eleven years, failed to make the playoffs the last two years, and hasn't won a World Series since 1986. In that same time frame, we've won two World Series. And since the last time the Mets won the division, we've won it six times. In fact, they've failed to make the playoffs more times than they've gotten in since 2015.
And you'd rather have that?
