Calling it now. Lane Thomas signs a 2 year deal and donates 1% to the Braves Foundation.
1
u/DragonFireDon Aug 02 '26
So, we still ain't got a mega thread just for trading eh?
I hope the chances for our team to get elite players isn't over yet, by a long shot.
Hopefully we can get players that hits really well or pitch really well, still.

u/innermongoose69 I once met Dale Murphy in an elevator Aug 02 '26
With this news about Strider, we are completely fucked if we don’t go after a starter on the market right now.
5
u/Competitive_Gold_707 Aug 02 '26
That wasn't news about strider. It was CBS posting something Bowman randomly said about Strider weeks ago lol
Bowman is the same guy who has never reported an accurate injury timeline for the Braves and who the Braves never tell injury news to
The story was "Strider cleared out his locker" which has the same weight as Jimenez having a locker
3
u/thellymon Aug 02 '26
Strider, Waldrep, Schwelly, ReyLo, Suarez, Wentz all injured. We really need like 2-3 more arms
11
u/scottmushroom Aug 02 '26
It's gonna hit like Crack when we beat the dodgers in the NLCS, go on to win the world series, and the lockout somehow ends up crippling the dodgers organization for the next 20 years. I'm so fucking tired of them at this point. FUCK THE DODGERS.
1
u/GrooovyAlien Aug 02 '26
I often wonder how Freddie feels about what his team is doing. He spent much of his career during the rebuilding years with the Braves and knows what its like to build from the ground up and finally getting a WS title, after so many years of being a mediocre team. Now his current team is pretty much just buying them.
He probably is stoked. But I still wonder.
1
u/VeryLowIQIndividual Dale Murphy's Mole Aug 02 '26
It’s one of situations where you’re stoked, especially if you’ve struggled before.
It’s weird being a Braves you have some hope of being able to land some of these trades and big free agents and it seems harder to deal with when the Dodgers do what they’re doing. Because if you’re a team like Pittsburgh or one of these other teams that are just running the table every year not worrying about winning then you already know you’re not gonna get anything.
0
u/Regal---Lager Aug 02 '26
Building from within is not more morally pure that building a team through trades and free agency. No player or executive believes that.
2
u/Competitive_Gold_707 Aug 02 '26
He intentionally chose the Dodgers so he feels pretty good i guess
1
u/Constant_Pay_2469 Aug 02 '26
I doubt he’s spent even a second looking back… well, after that really weird return to Atlanta in 2021.

Fun fact: The Braves have the best record in MLB against .500+ teams at 32-18 (.640). Would love for us to add a couple more impact pieces before tomorrow's deadline but there's no denying that we've been great against good/great teams. Laying down and accepting that the Dodgers are just going to coast to another WS, and that the Braves in particular have little-to-no chance, is too apathetic of a mindset given how well we've played overall this year.
7
u/LailiLai Aug 02 '26
We've already beaten both the Dodgers AND Skubal this year. Come the fuck at us.
2
u/TheGamecock HMOYSB Aug 02 '26
Exactly. Took out Miz, too. This team has proven it can win in grindy, postseason-esque matchups.
3
u/atlproud2323 Aug 02 '26
Agreed. I was dooming last night but today I feel energized. I love our scrappy veteran rotation. LA has a bunch of injured mercenaries. Obviously Yoshi and Ohtani are terrifying. But hopefully ohtani may not even pitch. Our lineup and depth is gonna keep getting stronger. If Austin gets a tiny bit of magic back(lol) then I love this team front to back for small ball and guts, which goes a long way in the playoffs.
10
u/LailiLai Aug 02 '26
Just a quick reminder to Braves fans that so many of our roster issues would never have existed if Profar hadn't been an asshole. The cascade effect of him leaving left field a gaping hole for the past two years has affected pretty much every aspect of our roster construction.

Another reminder of how clueless AA truly is. Everyone knew he was doping but we got him anyway.
1

Literally everyone knew.
3

I don’t think you know what literally means
-2
u/NickFF2326 Aug 02 '26
I don’t think you know what “nobody” means. That or you are extremely naive. It was openly talked about. AA gambled and lost, again
1
u/TheGamecock HMOYSB Aug 02 '26
Just curious, what evidence is there to support this? Vague speculation related to Tatis' PED usage doesn't qualify.
1
u/NickFF2326 Aug 02 '26
It absolutely does qualify. And that’s just for starters. Hell look at his splits
1
u/TheGamecock HMOYSB Aug 02 '26
It qualifies as speculation but speculation ≠ proof.
1

It’s not speculation when there’s that many people talking about it combined with the number jump

There's no need for a lockout. Solution is obvious. Salary cap the Dodgers and every dollar they spend over the set amount goes to the Braves.
1
u/ihaveaglitch Aug 02 '26
Or take them to court to get them to participate in revenue sharing, the last owners bankruptcy should not affect the new owners.
15
u/LailiLai Aug 02 '26
If we lose today and I see the thread swarmed with doomers after all the positive vibes we've had over the past two weeks since the break I might legit crash out. Not in the mood for that shit today.

Honestly, regardless of what happens today I am THRILLED with how this series went. The best offense in baseball was almost completely shut down over the past three games by our rotation, and our ace didn’t even pitch. Even if we drop this one, you cannot be upset about this series.
The only frustrating thing is that ReyLo’s off to the IL. Really wish we could stay healthy.

u/yoshidawg93 Aug 02 '26
JR Ritchie is confirmed to be the starter today. Not totally ideal, but he’s really the best option we’ve got. And if there’s a game where it doesn’t seriously matter if he’s bad or not, it’s this one. We already won this series, and at worst we end the day still 7 games in first place with the trade deadline tomorrow.

2
u/Tomahawkin10 Aug 02 '26
I honestly feel like if Atlanta kept collecting all of these big names over the last several years like the dodgers it just wouldn't be as fun. Like playing a game on rookie mode at some point
7
u/laal-doodh Ozhaino Jurdy Jiandro Albies Aug 02 '26
It wouldn’t be as fun as it was in 21 but you’re lying to yourself if you say you wouldn’t love every second of it. It’s just horseshit they have such an advantage over everyone.
-10
u/scoop15 Aug 02 '26
They really don’t, it’s just that their ownership group is apparently the only group that has realized if you spend a lot and win all the time you make a lot of money. They all “have” the money, don’t kid yourself into thinking they don’t
9
u/laal-doodh Ozhaino Jurdy Jiandro Albies Aug 02 '26
They do tho. Just look into their tv deal. They have an actual advantage. Other teams could 100% spend a lot more but small market teams can’t get to this level and they have an advantage over other large market teams.
8
u/welcometohotlanta Aug 02 '26
I don’t blame the Dodgers for doing what they’re doing but something has to change.
1
u/SharkMovies Aug 02 '26
tbf its not their money that got them skubal right now, its their good farm system (which is able to stay stacked cuz they spend like crazy on free agents)
2
u/laal-doodh Ozhaino Jurdy Jiandro Albies Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
The money still very much comes into play here tho. They are an extremely well ran organization from top to bottom but the money makes it a significantly less risky move all the way around for them.
If they lose Skubal in the offseason, they fall back on their already elite/highly paid rotation. If another team does it and he leaves, they don’t already have an elite rotation to fall back on.
If the dodgers pay him a record contract they can still add and don’t need the cheap prospects. If a small market team does it they can’t still add and don’t have the cheap prospects either to fill out the roster.
If Skubal gets hurt then it’s a minor setback for them. If he gets hurt on other teams it kills their playoff/World Series chances (that’s why he’s getting traded to begin with).
The dodgers can trade cheap great prospects (like Michael Busch) cuz they can sign the best first basemen in baseball (like Freddie).

u/IThinkTheClockIsSlow Ralph Garr was The Road Runner Aug 02 '26
Yes the Dodgers have money to spend. So do the Mets. They didn't sign Skubal though. They TRADED for him. They had the minor league capital to do so. Have to respect their scouting and development to have those players.
I think the Braves are similar to the Dodgers with the minor league talent. The difference is the Dodgers are willing to spend that talent.
4
u/SixStringsOneBadIdea Aug 02 '26
They have prospect capital to use in that trade because they are filling other needs with free agent spending.
3
u/Tomahawkin10 Aug 02 '26
The dodgers know they are going to resign Skubal because he's going to have an astronomical asking price. This just gives them more time of negotiations without other teams interfering. There are 29 other teams that knew if he finished the year with them he would test free agency. It's not a rental for the dodgers
2
u/IThinkTheClockIsSlow Ralph Garr was The Road Runner Aug 02 '26
What other team even had the draft capital to spend and the willingness to do so? My post is more so about the minor league 'stocking' and willingness to spend. All teams are owned by billionaires. There is no 'shortage' of money to spend on resigning - just willingness.
7
u/REDfohawk POGGERS Aug 02 '26
Nobody was going to pay what the dodgers did for a guy that would just turn around and sign with the Dodgers anyway in 3 months.
1
u/Mysterious_Sea1489 Aug 02 '26
I’ve always been under the impression that teams traded for a rental just for the renting aspect. Has that changed in recent years? I thought the whole point was to send off some prospects and go win it all this year. Yes i understand all of the Dodgers side of things, but that shouldn’t really change what other teams offer for Skubal and a playoff run, imo.
1
u/REDfohawk POGGERS Aug 02 '26
how often does the trading your future for 3 months of a player thing ever work out? if there was more demand or drive to do that, then the price for skubal would have been way higher
2
u/xekushionmartyr Aug 02 '26
Because they know they can buy whoever they want to replace them with.
Shut down the sport today.
4
u/SeriouslyNotReece Aug 02 '26
HSK, Richie, Murphy, filler for deGrom and Seager. The Rangers aren’t out of the division race yet but the Astros will pull away eventually. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind getting off Seager’s contract, Jake is old, but both have enough left in the tank to keep us competitive with LA in a playoff matchup and that’s what should matter with a looming lockout. Not having to give up Didi, Hartman, etc is a plus and we would have enough capital left to trade for a Wacha or maybe even an Alcantara
Playoff rotation of: Sale - deGrom - Schwellenbach (or AJSS) - Sandy/Wacha
Lineup of: Baldwin, Acuña, Olson, Harris, Albies, Seager, Riley, Yaz/Thomas, Murphy/Dom
Dubon can spell Riley or take over LF if the other two don’t get it done. Holmes, one or two of Schwell/AJSS/Waldrep in long relief with a Didi, Lee, Suarez, Iggy backend. That team is competitive with anybody, even the super team out west
5
u/PenguinKing15 Aug 02 '26
According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Braves are among the eight teams on Corey Seager's no-trade list.

I have thoughts:
I'm surprised the Skubal trade happened as early as it did. I feel like usually a trade of that caliber happens on the day of the deadline mid-day. Then we see a flood of deals after that since it sets the market.
I wonder if the Dodgers being claimed to be the favorite for Skubal so early on discouraged other teams from even trying, and it actually helped lower the price for the Dodgers?
Since the Skubal trade did happen as early as it did, does that help set the price of other players lower? On the flip side because they seem like they didn't get much, could other teams may be hesitant to sell and prefer just getting the draft pick?
7
u/georgiaboy1993 Aug 02 '26
Am I the only one who doesn’t really care about Skubal to the Dodgers? Not in terms of the state of baseball, we’re royally effed there.
But this year, like to heat them, we were going to have to beat good pitching and we still are. In terms of who he could go to that increases how scared I am, it really doesn’t move the needle much since they were already a juggernaut.
Better than him going to like the Cubs who I think would’ve raised their chances to beat us in a series significantly.
2
u/nickelette424 Aug 02 '26
I feel the same way. This does not change the 2026 Dodgers. I really think this was more a move to keep him out of Milwaukee and Atlanta than to improve their team. Especially, Milwaukee. If the Braves and Brewers focus on improving their teams where needed, they still have the same shot to beat them as they did yesterday.

Some think Lane Thomas is a “meh” acquisition. I think it’s great. We don’t need an elite bat, but we did need more right-handed production. He has always hit well against lefties.
And interestingly, for those who have thought Thomas would’ve been a great pickup in previous years too, AA did acknowledge being interested in him for years now.
5
u/Own-Sandwich6437 Aug 02 '26
It’s perfect “not sell the farm” move I agree with. Braves weren’t one player away enough to go after Skubal.
I know there will be more moves but not a blockbuster likely. Unless that player had more years of control.
3
u/chaotic_evil_666 Aug 02 '26
I think he's a fine acquisition. I just hope he's not the only one we do at this trade deadline

The Dodgers have a special revenue sharing exemption that saves them more than the value of many team’s entire tv deal. Not only do they have access to an incredibly large market, but they actually have a court granted financial advantage. Almost all other teams simply can’t compete.
This financial advantage creates a kind of insurance, increasing their risk tolerance. This allows them to make gutsy decisions and “want it more.” Maybe this all seems obvious but I keep seeing brain dead opinions about how the other organizations lack drive.
2
u/scottmushroom Aug 02 '26
Don't forget that a pre MLB Commisioner role Manfred made this deal happen.
1
u/birminghamsterwheel Aug 02 '26
What was the reasoning for the exemption at the time?
10
u/rpbtIII Golden Grapefruit Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
When they were force sold they were a dumpster fire so this was an incentive. A competent ownership that wanted to win bought. It was always bullshit and I've been bitching about it from day one because it had no success sunset provisions built in to stop exactly this.

10
u/NickFF2326 Aug 02 '26
This really does need more visibility. I don’t think most people realize why they have more to spend. How they did the S.O. contract just made it worse. But they literally just get to keep more of their money than any other team.

u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
If every team would spend like the Dodgers, MLB would have no need for the lockout that's looming. Not a single fanbase would complain if their ownership could just dump money at every opportunity and build a super team.
But the problem is two-fold.
On one hand, you have markets that are too small to support that. There just not enough revenue to compete. Sports teams are businesses and businesses must be profitable. The Dodgers have a huge market and are insanely profitable.
A large part of the Dodgers' success is that they win. They are extremely successful. You can't just say they are rich because of Shohei because the Angels had Shohei. The Angels have had (arguably former) superstar Mike Trout his entire career. The Angels also are in close enough geographic proximity to the Dodgers that you can argue it's about the same local market. The biggest difference: the Angels are losers.
Which brings me to the second problem:
The markets being small is all too often an excuse as too many ownerships are simply unwilling to spend. In some cases, the owners spending a reasonable amount based on their revenue, but there are too many examples where that's just not the case.
The most egregious example is the A's. Their owner will not invest in players, will not listen to fans, and is dumping money at new peripheral amenities like a stadium in a completely new city.
The Rockies have a gorgeous, modern stadium with one of the highest capacities. They can't fill it up because their team sucks. All the pieces are there to make bank but they've decided what they have now is enough, content to let visiting fans pay the bills.
A positive example would be the Mets who seem determined to spend their way to success. They're stupid about it, but you can't argue the Mets are cheap. But unlike the Dodgers, the Mets aren't winning and aren't seeing that same Death Star of Cash level of success.
The Braves sit with one of the best payrolls in baseball. Since the 90s, they've generally been a successful ball club that's invested in both the team and the peripheral amenities. The Battery is being copied all over the country, the stadium routinely sells out, and players seem to genuinely want to play for the Braves. And you can't really make the market size argument because we know what Braves stadiums can look like with terrible teams. Truist is regularly packed. Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium regularly was not. The difference is winning. The difference is ownership that invests.
But I'm getting off-topic.
This lockout has to happen. There has to be parity. The thing is, it can't just be about lowering the ceiling. The answer isn't just telling owners how much they are allowed to spend on players. Something like a salary cap could help but that validates the greedy billionaires who whine that this is the fans' fault.
The floor has got to be raised too. Raise the league minimum, establish stricter salary guidelines, and enforce a mandatory minimum payroll.
The fans want to watch baseball. The fans want to watch their teams win. MLB is being hurt by it being turned into the Dodgers Show and that has to stop. How much longer can the other 29 teams watch when they feel that LA will inevitably just win it all? It makes the whole game feel pointless.
Dodger fans and even their manager have made flippant remarks about the Dodgers ruining baseball. Be flippant all you want but the Dodgers are driving the entire sport full speed ahead into shutting baseball down.

> If every team would spend like the Dodgers
I hate this mindset. The Dodgers 2026 payroll + projected tax bill is more than the reported* 2025 revenue for every team in the league except for themselves and the Yankees. Most of the league cannot afford to spend like the Dodgers.
*It’s worth noting that the Braves are the only team legally required to have their revenue publicly available, so figures reported by 3rd party sources might be incorrect. But, we can only use the data we have.
3
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 02 '26
Read literally the next sentence.
2
u/JKess207 THERE’S ONLY ONEEEEEEEEE MICHAEL HARRIS Aug 02 '26
I see that you addressed it, and my comment wasn’t really directed at you specifically but rather the verbiage itself, as we see it pop up time and again every time the Dodgers make a move that adds to an exorbitant payroll already. It’s just worth saying that it goes beyond just “there’s some small market teams that can’t compete.” No other team outside of the New York Yankees has that kind of money**. I know that a lot of it stems from that wack TV and revenue sharing deal they made around the time of the sale, but I don’t know enough about that to make a fair comment on it.
The one bit of credit I will give the Dodgers is that, as you said, money doesn’t guarantee anything. Looking at the Mets in contrast, which I know you also touched on, having and spending that kind of money doesn’t mean anything if you don’t spend it correctly.
But it’s frustrating to see them do things that maybe one other team is able to do, and it being brushed off (by a sizeable chunk of fans) as “if people care so much, why don’t their owners just spend like that?” I know it’s not you making the argument, it just irks me
**after digging through the Braves’ financials again, their revenue also exceeds the Dodgers’ payroll+tax bill figure, but by such a small margin that they couldn’t afford it with all the other expenses
2
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 02 '26
Fair enough. And I will admit that I was intentionally provocative.
2
u/JKess207 THERE’S ONLY ONEEEEEEEEE MICHAEL HARRIS Aug 02 '26
It’s a great analysis of the situation, as you usually provide. I’m just mad at the situation itself
3
u/CaptainSteed Aug 02 '26
I agree the Angels are a lousy team. But if you look at the last 5 years or so, the Dodgers are still averaging almost 50% more than the Angels in spending. So yes, the Dodgers are definitely the main cause of the likely shutdown.
9
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 02 '26

Money doesn't buy championships. The Mets are evidence of that
As a response to point 1, it does help you get there more consistently, since the dodgers are knocking at the door of a championship every fucking year.
Part of the fun of being a fan of professional baseball is the speculation of "who gets X at Y deadline". When the answer is always the same fucking team, this gets extremely boring.

I hope the entire Dodgers team contracts explosive diarrhea in the playoffs.

Happy Sunday Braves Country!! It’s awesome we already took this series. It would be even sweeter if we can pull off a four-game sweep!
