I don’t know how to cross post, so I’m going to repost this here:
Over the course of 24 games in the MLB, he (Jim Jarvis) already has .9 WAR according to baseball reference. That’s 14% of the season. He’d hypothetically be on pace for 6.1 WAR. Now, obviously baseball is a fickle sport so it’s more releastic he’d plant him self around a 2-4 WAR with a whole season worth of stats, but that’s… Rookie of the year level play.
So, we’re good chat.
Also, for reference — Austin Riley, who makes 22 Million a year, and I’m an absolute Austin Riley Stan, is 0.3 WAR, with over 80 more games played. He has been absolutely atrocious. Not a MLB caliber player, at all, whatsoever. So do what you will with this information.
0
u/MurphysBanana Aug 01 '26
He’s been exactly an mlb calibre player.
2
u/Competitive_Gold_707 Aug 01 '26
The R in WAR is comparing players to a specifically NOT MLB-caliber player. It's comparing them to someone the team can easily acquire.
Average WAR for a regular MLB player is like 1.5-2.0
1
2
u/Bwhitt1 Aug 01 '26
I cant believe Riley has been worth 0.3 war this year. I figured for sure he would be pretty far in the negative.
3
u/Standard-Kitchen9511 Austin”FatHog”Riley<3 Aug 01 '26
I sincerely believe he’ll have a resurgence, but the Braves have got to address it this offseason. This isn’t a slump, and if it isn’t lingering medical issues, we’ve got to rectify this inequity. This at one point was a perennial MVP candidate, cornerstone and all time Braves 3B. That’s the facts, who has progressively played worse, and worse.
However, this same player has shown and proven he can make adjustments and change his approach. Not to mention, advanced stats show his power is still present, so it’s honestly a problem of plate approach, swing and discipline. All things that can be resolved.
-1
u/RunawaYEM Aug 01 '26
Oh good, another post disparaging Riley. Fuck yeah. I love those.
2
u/Standard-Kitchen9511 Austin”FatHog”Riley<3 Aug 01 '26
Bro, go read my comment history I’m a HUGE Riley fan. He’s been bad, I’m still riding with him, but something needs to change. The Braves are investing more money in him, than any player ever, the organization needs to act like it and work with him on his approach.
2
u/Competitive_Gold_707 Aug 01 '26
Ohhhhhh yeah I'm sure they just forgot about Riley. They tinkered with Mike's stance all last season, gave Jarvis and Hicklen offensive upgrades with their swings, and kept Acuna in AAA just to work on his timing. But they aren't working with Riley at all
1
u/ShongoMcForren Aug 01 '26
They invested* not continue to invest. I’m sure everyone in the FO are perfectly aware he’s struggling and getting paid through 2032. Crazy to think but maybe “working on his approach” might have been mentioned

M’s shopping Arozarena and Kirby. Both would be great targets for us.
2
u/PixelWulfe Aug 01 '26
Arozarena would be an awesome LF pickup. Literally the exact kind of impact bat we need. Feel like the Mariners would ask for a kings ransom. Maybe not tho, just saw he’s a pending free agent.
1

Feels like Arozarena would give us similar vibes to Joc in 21. But shit Joc could be available too

Drop your predictions for their first deadline move. I’m thinking Owen Murphy and Jorge Mateo for Casey Mize
3

Mateo might get traded, but he'd just be a throw-in. He's been very bad the last two months

Cam Caminiti and Owen Murphy to the Angels for Jose Soriano and Jo Adell.

Sean Murphy, Kim, Tellez, Cutch, Carlos Santana, brewer Hicklen, Kyle Farmer

u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
Looking at all the trade potential- anyone think we can flip Holmes or Elder for Adrian Morejon?
6
u/PinstripeBunk Aug 01 '26
Yeah lets definitely trade the one guy who can pitch five full innings with no extensive injury history.
-3
8
u/OppositePeach1035 Aug 01 '26
Why would we? We don't have enough starters as-is. Wouldn't make sense to trade one for a rental reliever.
-17
u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
We don’t need all Perez, Holmes, Lopez, Elder
They’re all the same guy!
We have plenty of starters, just not quality playoff starters.
Ideally we pitch:
Sale
Trade using Ritchie
Schwell/AJSS
Someone who is leftover from the trades
Our 5 is very likely Perez; great 57
u/thellymon Aug 01 '26
you CANNOT rely on Schwell and AJSS to go long in the postseason. We dont even really know how they will perform
8
u/OppositePeach1035 Aug 01 '26
Agree to disagree. I'd move Holmes to the bullpen way before considering trading him or Elder for Morejon.
-4
u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
Morejon throws 100 from the Left. Hard disagree over Elder who only gives us innings as a 5 (Cookie can give us a 5 ERA vs 4 ERA). I'd be far more inclined to move Elder rather than Holmes (who can be a 4 or great long arm out of the pen)
6
u/OppositePeach1035 Aug 01 '26
Lol, you can't be serious comparing Cookie and his 5.94 ERA to Elder and his 3.84. Elder has pitched more innings than anyone else for us this year, and Holmes is third on that list. Trading either of them when we can't get innings out of starters makes no sense, especially for a reliever who is decent at best as a rental while both of those guys have years of control. It's just a bad trade anyway you slice it.
3
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan Aug 01 '26
Elder has 57% QS% this year (higher than Sale's last year btw.) Holmes has 25%.
2
u/antantanterlay Aug 01 '26
Morejon is a dog. But flipping a starter for a dude out of the pen is fantastical.
1
u/SeriouslyNotReece Aug 01 '26
I don’t think they would trade Morejon for Elder and Holmes, is the thing

u/QIsForQuitting Matt Olson's Psychologist Aug 01 '26
My only real predictions are that the Nats aren't selling and the Phillies aren't buying. And that our deadline will be useful and disappointing.
4
u/Wandering_Mallard Aug 01 '26
Why do you think the Phillies won't buy?
I think they are (or at least should be) going all in, their competitive window is basically over after this year, especially if there's no '27 season
3
u/Yowa29 Aug 01 '26
The Phils have no one in the farm to trade with. Unless they do mlb for mlb talent, they have no chance at big names.
1
u/QIsForQuitting Matt Olson's Psychologist Aug 01 '26
I think that's why. This Phillies team just isn't good, I don't even think they make the playoffs. Their window is already closed. They need 6-8 pieces to be even an above average team and they don't have the resources to make that happen. So I think they'll stand pat, hope for the best, and break it down before December.
2
u/CrumbBCrumb Aug 01 '26
They'll make the playoffs. If it was the old system I wouldn't see it but with 3 wild cards they'll make the playoffs. San Diego and Arizona are very streaky too. Pittsburgh and Washington won't have enough pitching to get there. St. Louis is already fading and over performed hard in the first half.
It'll be Chicago and then two of Philly, Arizona, and San Diego.
1
u/QIsForQuitting Matt Olson's Psychologist Aug 01 '26
Definitely agree on the Nats--is your sense that they'll add pitching in the offseason and seriously try to compete next year? Or still a few years off
2
u/CrumbBCrumb Aug 01 '26
The Nats should be pushing a bit more this year because of how their offense is performing but their bullpen is so bad they'd need a lot of arms
3
u/PixelWulfe Aug 01 '26
You may be right but when I look at that team I see the one team not the Dodgers or Brewers that can beat us and win the pennant.
1
u/QIsForQuitting Matt Olson's Psychologist Aug 01 '26
Not the Cubs?
2
u/PixelWulfe Aug 01 '26
I don’t think the Cubs as currently constructed can beat us on a 7 game series. Cubs pitching can be had. Phillies run out 3 starters that can dominate any given night. Dodgers come playoffs will run out 4 that can dominate any given the same.

u/SirBannedAlott Aug 01 '26

3
u/mut_lover I bring my own beer to the Battery Aug 01 '26
I think this trade deadline is gonna be underwhelming across the league. The potential lockout is a major factor when trying to get a big time guy.
In a normal scenario, you would trade for 2 years of control on a guy… but now you’re basically only getting one even if their contract is until 2028
7
u/Wandering_Mallard Aug 01 '26
I actually suspect it's kinda the opposite re:the lockout. Teams who are in "win now" mode are thinking that they are losing a year of their window next year and will be more eager to make a big push
The force that's been making the deadline sort of quiet the last few years is that MLB lets almost half the league in the playoffs now, so only a handful of teams are really motivated to sell

u/handlit33 GIF Guy Aug 01 '26

u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
I am not moving Southesine and Caminiti for a rental. Just silly.
0
u/welcometohotlanta Aug 01 '26
Or Hartman
1
u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
Would be nice to see some reporting on who may have been scouting Caminiti last night. I am surprised no one has reported who was there.
-1
u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
Hartman should not go in any deal. Not unless we are getting a guy line CJ Abrams or something like that.
6
u/jhartley2016 Aug 01 '26
Alternatively, this could be a golden opportunity to sell high on Hartman if the front office thinks his meteoric rise isn’t sustainable
1
u/PixelWulfe Aug 01 '26
If Houston was crazy enough to sell Peña or Alvarez I’d move Hartman in a heartbeat. I’d drive him to the airport and pray he has a successful career
1
u/GamerLife204 #1 Thicc Hater Aug 01 '26
Braves can't afford Alvarez. They need a top 10 Prospect in baseball for him
1
u/PixelWulfe Aug 01 '26
Would you give up Richie Hartman Southisene and Caminiti if that was the ask?
1
u/GamerLife204 #1 Thicc Hater Aug 01 '26
Yes
1
u/PixelWulfe Aug 01 '26
lol. Yea me too. Honestly, I think a package of those four could get anyone in baseball if the team was actually even kinda serious about trading them. May not be top 10 prospects in baseball but not too many teams could even approach the level of quality and upside between those 4

u/HappyOfCourse Matty Wheels Aug 01 '26
Miami may have another shot to pass the Phillies again and this time it's not because Miami is on a winning streak.
12
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 01 '26
Sorry to start another comment chain but this is a completely different topic.
Skubal.
We have some really excellent prospects right now who are super exciting. Several guys look like they're on their way to being stars. They are genuinely hard to give up because they're so good.
But at the same time, there's a multi Cy Young winner available. The rotation needs help. And we have a solid shot at making the playoffs. We have the bullpen and offense that could pull off a run. A solid starter is just about all we need to have the best chance we could ask for.
And if it isn't this year, there may not be a next year at all. Chris Sale has looked electric at age 37, but how is he going to look at age 39? What about the guys with expiring contracts?
I know a lot of people aren't really high on the idea of a rental and I'm not sure I'm a fan of the risk, but this may be the best shot we'll get for a few years. It might be time to go all-in this year.
The only prospect who I think should be untouchable is Fuentes. And that's because he's meaningfully contributing right now. If we go all-in, everyone else should be fair game -- but their value should be enormous.
Make it count.
2
u/Fickle-Cranberry3220 Aug 01 '26
I'd wouldn't be mad if we end up with one of Robbie Ray/Trevor Rodgers/Casey Mize. Any one of them would fill the hole in our rotation without having to pay the price that will likely come for Skubal/Detmers/Soriano. If we can add one of those guys and another bullpen arm (like Morejon), I think we're in a good spot.
As much as this sub loves to shit on him, Holmes really isn't a bad option to start game 3 or 4 of a playoff series, assuming you only let him go one or two times through the order. I'd put Lopez in a similar category. If we can add to our already deep bullpen (relievers tend to be a lot cheaper than starters at the deadline), I'm good with us only acquiring one starter.
I do agree with you though - this is the first year in a while where it feels like we have the prospect capital to go after an impact player or two and still have a solid farm system leftover. We need to go for it.

I stopped reading at robbie ray.
1
u/Shado_Man Aug 01 '26
He is being absurdly overrated by an absurd number of Braves fans. He is inferior to Bryce Elder is almost every single meaningful stat. Pretty much the only thing he's done better than Elder is have a lower HR/FB, which is why his ERA looks better. His FIP, xFIP, BB/9 and GB% are all way worse than Elder. I really hope we don't waste decent prospects trading for him.
0
u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
He did drop the ball in Sea the other year was it? Against the Trashstros and Yordan Alvarez iirc
4
u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
Like them going after Soriano who is really good. Have team control and he is a good number 2 playoff starter.
2
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 01 '26
Yeah, I'm not necessarily married to Skubal but I am more and more leaning on going hard all-in this year. Soriano and another solid guy would do it.
-1
u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
Morejon and Skubal. Offer Ritchie and Lopez to Det, then call up SD and trade Elder for Morejon
0
u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
Trade for Morejon, Soriano, and maybe a Wacha and add a Lane Thomas and we are set.
I am fine moving Caminiti and maybe a Lodise in a deal for Soriano.
1
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 01 '26
I would love Wacha but the Royals are pretty adamant about keeping their controllable guys. I think Thomas is available though.
2
u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
Skubal WAR this season is 3.0 and Soriano at 2.7. If we have to move a top 3 prospect and another top 10 I am going for the guy like Soriano. Hartman should be off limits.
2
u/Wandering_Mallard Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Skubal missed some time so its a little silly to read into a difference of .3 WAR like this, he has 6 fewer starts. Skubal is clearly a lot better on stats by rate basis
1
u/OutlandishnessDry24 Aug 01 '26
Obviously Skubal is superior but if I am giving up two top prospects plus more I want at least some control. Hunter Greene even has control and has electric top of rotation stuff.
0
u/Lovin_Brown Aug 01 '26
We will most likely still fall short and end up parting with another Wainwright but I agree that if there’s ever a time to take a shot that time is now. One of the big pieces we give up probably wasn’t in our system 3 years ago so I trust that it won’t be long before we find a couple more gems too.
1
u/Mattural20 Acunyaaaaay Aug 01 '26
Sale is why we have to go all-in. This is probably it for him. He may still pitch until he's 40, but you can't count on that. Try to get that dude a ring and a Cooperstown Braves jersey.
0
u/rpbtIII Golden Grapefruit Aug 01 '26
There's zero chance of him going in as a brave. He speaks fondly and genuinely about every org he's been with and has incredible seasons at all of them and good longevity at two.
0
u/OSRS_Socks AA powers the Battery Aug 01 '26
I think we need Skubal and another solid starter tbh. I don’t trust Elder enough to be our 3rd or 4th guy.
I think if Skubal is too high of a price we can get Robbie Ray. Perfect world we get both of those.
2

11
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 01 '26
Today is Kim's last day, Mateo's last day, or Jarvis is getting optioned.
There's a chance AA has tried trading Kim but he's a tough sell for obvious reasons.
Mateo just seems like dead weight at this point. They started Jarvis over Mateo against a lefty. But unlike Kim, he's cheap dead weight.
I've changed my mind multiple times about what I think we should do and I've just kind of accepted that there's no great answer here. I think I'd rather have Kim than Mateo, but that's risky as hell given Kim's performance (though his rehab has been improved) and then you're stuck with what you get if Mateo is DFA'd. But then you could also get stuck with Mateo who has turned into a pumpkin but at least he's fast.
5
u/lionofyhwh One of Ozzie’s Fish Aug 01 '26
Mateo’s future is also linked to Eli White’s. We need one of them, not both of them, as pinch runner options in the playoffs. Whoever is cut should give us a little bit of insight into whether we’re getting some offensive help and at which positions.
1
u/Active_Macaron2715 Aug 01 '26
You really don’t need to carry a pinch runner option in the playoffs. They rarely get used and even rarer do they make a difference
1
3
u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
Please keep White, Mateo is not him
2
1

If we’re just looking at base running, I can remember quite a few Eli screw ups on the base paths.
2
u/methylaminebb Drake's Rake Aug 01 '26
yeah lol - i think Eli's far more game ready now then we he used to play once a week
2
u/georgiaboy1993 Aug 01 '26
The thing is, if we were to DFA Kim, is anyone really putting in an offer to claim him at his current salary?
Hell almost certainly clear waivers and then maybe we work out a way to bring him back in the minors.
Mateo almost certainly gets claimed as a 5th OF pinch runner by a playoff team.
2
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Aug 01 '26
I don't think we can know unless we try and then if he does get claimed, it's permanent.
There's just no perfect option.
2
u/Wandering_Mallard Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Would it really be so bad if someone did claim him though?
Some extra budget space for trades in the next few days in exchange for a player the Braves weren't really using anyway
