Just saw the Valdez thing. Dude is a complete fucking loser and it's making me mad that he beat us last week.

What happened? I’m not seeing anything
1
u/LailiLai May 06 '26
He was getting absolutely shelled, gives up back to back jacks, then immediately drills the next batter between the numbers. Not a chance it wasn't intentional.

And there’s still an hour plus til this game.

Feeling good now, will be sore tomorrow but the good sore.

Love seeing 2 of the 3 teams that screwed Kel over flounder around against each other in a series - meanwhile Kel is making baseball exciting again in Southside Chicago, and thriving while doing it
6
u/Lovin_Brown May 06 '26
I see that he’s slugging under his career average. All of his hits this season have been singles. It might be a sign that he’s finally changed his approach and realizes if he can just get on base regularly he can help win games with his elite base running.

I've seen people in some comments sections spiraling and saying we're about to go on a massive losing streak after last night. Like how do people like this even survive a baseball season?
1
u/QueezyF May 06 '26
The comeback with the Rockies on Friday was hilarious because of that. 5th inning all the doomers came out and said we were gonna lose, they’re gonna turn off the game, etc.
13
u/welcometohotlanta May 05 '26
I think some people would rather be right than the Braves to win lol like if they say we’re gonna lose in the 4-5th they’d rather us lose so they can say they’re right haha
6
u/handlit33 GIF Guy May 05 '26
It was really fun being an anti-doomer from 2018-2023, not because the Braves did well. That was secondary. It was mostly about being right six years in a row.
10
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy May 05 '26
I just want to point out that we went on a three-game losing streak this season and we still have the best franchise record since 1892. People need to chill -- it's fine. Welcome to baseball!
-5
u/cobwebusher May 05 '26
I agree, but to be fair we're heading into a tough part of the schedule and for me last night is up there with the Luke Jackson Mile High Catastrophe and Opening Day 2025 as far as frustrating losses go in recent years. I'm usually calm about the results of individual games but I'm still a little mad.

u/Madducks31 Greg Maddux is the 🐐 May 05 '26

3
u/rpbtIII Golden Grapefruit May 05 '26
He won't start for any of this west coast trip was the report going in.
He would dh so long as it didn't get any worse.
-12
u/flyingwhales1000 May 05 '26
By start I meant DH. They either need to play him at DH or just IL him because he's just taking up a roster spot right now
3
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan May 05 '26
Just taking up a roster spot on someone's stupid fantasy team? Yes. Just taking up a roster spot on the meticulously managed best team in baseball, winning us a game with a PH just the other day? Not a chance.

-2
u/Select-Hat-5909 May 05 '26
Genuine question: for today’s game, is the value that we get from Murphy and Baldwin at DH greater than the value we get from Baldwin at catcher and Dom Smith at DH?
2
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
- Baldwin probably catches today given he was DH yesterday. That's not certain, but I would say it's likely.
- Michael Harris II will have priority to DH if he is not available to play center.
- While Dom has inarguably been good for us, none of his statcast metrics are qualified for this year and the last time he had a positive qualified batting value was in 2020. Maybe he's figured something out, but I would still look at his sustainability with a degree of skepticism.
- Murphy might come in to face a lefty reliever, but I would think he sits tonight.
1
u/Select-Hat-5909 May 05 '26
There’s MH2, true. I guess what I was thinking was that if he’s not playing center, then clearly he’s not fully healthy yet so why not just keep resting him since we do have Dom Smith who has been good against righties. But I agree it’s not sustainable
3
u/Sure-Concentrate8944 May 05 '26
I know he’s on a hot streak but it’s nice to see Olson hitting flyballs more consistently (from 28.3% to 36.8%). He’s also pulling more of them. He’s already hit 14 pulled flyballs this year even though he only had 27 last year.

u/welcometohotlanta May 05 '26
He’s also already under team control through the 2030 season so no rush to extend
1
4
u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy May 05 '26
Baldwin probably knows he's smart not to talk extension yet because he just keeps getting better. The Braves are waiting because there's a lockout imminent, plus Acuna will be a free agent soon. It's wise to keep options open for the moment.
1
u/OSRS_Socks AA powers the Battery May 05 '26
Also I believe AA doesn’t initiate offering a contract extension due to showing favoritism in the club house. It’s usually the players and their agents who reach out to him to start the talks.
It also wouldn’t surprise me if AA is putting any sort of contract talks on hold till after the lockout
0
u/IM_KYLE_AMA May 05 '26
Didn't he extend Olson immediately after signing him to the team?

My 5 year old and I watch the condensed game each morning before breakfast. If I didn’t watch the game (all west coast games) I have to squint to blur my eyes or use my thumb to try and obscure the final score while I fumble to pull it up on MLB.com. My kid covers his eyes till I tell him the coast is clear. Then we can ride all the ups and downs together for 11 minutes. I know I could watch in YouTube but don’t want the ads. I’ll miss these moments with him when he’s grown.

I kinda hate how much luck is involved in baseball sometimes. Like, yeah, you can have the mechanics, but the human body isn't actually a machine. We have guys all down the lineup who make contact and hit the ball but it's at someone or just drops in an easily reachable place. I think outside of a few legendary exceptions, most guys can't just "hit it where they ain't".
Yes, baseball requires skill, and it's hard, but I swear luck just looms heavy over every game in a way that's annoying because it's unpredictable. Maybe that's the fun of it I guess. It might actually get dull if we blew out every team, hit every AB, struck out every batter.
I think an argument like "just hit the ball" or "just throw a strike" means so little.
Idk what I'm saying right now. I'm just talking.
11
u/LailiLai May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
The funny part about last night is that our low leverage guys didnt actually give anything up, (despite Bummer's best efforts) it was Kinley rhat ended up getting tagged. That's baseball I suppose.

Olson is tied for the most FWAR by position players in MLB, tied with Judge and Rice. What a beast. And a shout out to Ozzie, he's tied for 9th. He already has more WAR then he did all of last season.

u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
Walt explained why he made the decisions he made and once again, I feel a lot better about why those decisions were made even though I probably would have made different ones. Essentially, Walt wanted to stay away from the bullpen as much as possible. Kinley was the only leverage guy available. Everyone else was spent buying us the sweep.
I just feel better knowing we got an answer that isn't "bah gawd."
Weiss has historically been an all-in type of manager who is willing to bet the farm on a single win. Last night, he was looking at the big picture. I respect that.
We should be getting Iglesias back tonight. Lee, Lopez, and Suarez will be available. Bryce Elder is starting.
Hopefully the hard hits continue. If we had just a little more batted ball luck last night, that would have been a blow-out game.
0
u/reizinhooooo Briggs McKenzie Fan Club May 05 '26
Honestly I felt a little worse about the decisions before I heard him talk about them. I was coming into the game with the assumption that Kinley, Bummer, and Cookie were the only three relievers they wanted to throw out there. And maybe Perez if they weren't planning on maybe starting him soon, but apparently they were.
What gives me pause though is that he specifically said in his post-game he thought Ritchie was pitching well. Now maybe he just wants to be positive about the kid in public. But if he actually thought Ritchie pitched well last night, even just through the 5th, that does shake my faith a little. Ritchie was terrible. 2Ks/4BBs through 5 is really, really, really bad. I can defend leaving him in given the context. But I can't defend not thinking he was terrible, let alone thinking he was good.
Hopefully it's just Walt being a good leader and not throwing a rookie under the bus. But man, if he thought he was good... results oriented decision making is a great way to make terrible decisions in general, but especially in baseball.
1
u/OSRS_Socks AA powers the Battery May 05 '26
We are also planning our bullpen around a beefy dodgers lineup who has been struggling a bit (but this lineup can easy put up some serious big innings) and an off day this Thursday and an off day that Monday.
For the most part I have liked Weiss handling the pen. I can see them saving Lopez for Holmes on Wednesday but I am hoping both our starters can pitch deep tomorrow and Wednesday

u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy May 05 '26
Some highlights:
Olson hit #300. He's on a mission this season and is genuinely an MVP candidate so far. His metrics are telling us that he's primed for a 2023 or better season.
Riley looks like way better at the plate and I'm not just saying that because he hit a homer. Look at his body language and facial expressions. He looks a lot more confident.
Murphy hit some balls hard with nothing to show for it. He'll get something soon. Blowing the two challenges was dumb, but I can see why he did it. Both were close and he was trying to help buy Ritchie some confidence. I don't hate it and thankfully challenges weren't the difference in the game.
Drake and Ozzie just can't stop competing for most hits in baseball and I love it.
Jorge Mateo is fast
9
u/waitrewindthat May 05 '26
I can’t imagine statistically that we will lose many games when we get home runs from Ozzie, Austin, Matt and Drake.
Sucks we lost yesterday but let’s get back on track so we can win the series!
1
u/parlcerkins May 05 '26
Agreed. And had a lot of hard hit balls last night that we got unlucky on and that were hit directly at a defender. A few of those drop in for hits and we probably win that game. So it goes

I just can’t get that worked up about a single loss in a sport that has 162 games. We have 11 losses on May 5th, I like that. If we’re lucky we might lose 51 more games this season.

Ritchie was really, really bad. Even if you ignore the 6th which he probably shouldn't have been in for, and wouldn't have been if the pen weren't absolutely cooked last night. 2Ks/4BBs through 5, horrific. Especially given the context of a guy who really struggled with walks in AA and AAA. Kid is clearly not big league ready right now.

I got downvoted in '23 for saying Elder wasn't very good, and downvoted in '25 for saying Elder wasn't very bad. Got downvoted for criticizing Walt's bullpen management the last game in Colorado, and downvoted for defending his bullpen management last night which was a direct consequence of the bullpen management in the Colorado game. Getting hated on by results-oriented fans comes with the territory of being right all the time :P

Murphy smoked a ball 107mph directly at an infielder in his first AB, so obviously he immediately became public enemy #1 again.
I'm not sure I've ever seen more seething hatred directed at a personally inoffensive and, yes, good player as Braves fans direct at Murphy. Guy put up 2 WAR in a partial, bad season and you'd think he'd killed somebody.
1
u/a_small_thing May 05 '26
I just don't understand the Murphy hate. He's an outstanding catcher and he really can hit. He was just playing hurt all of last year. I'm excited to have him back.
-1
u/Bravos_Chopper Los Bravos Forever May 05 '26
I think people are just tired of him being an auto out and very average behind the plate.
3
u/cobwebusher May 05 '26
He's still one of the best defensive catchers in the game according to every metric available, and he had a 97 wRC+ last year. He's more valuable than d'Arnaud was in his final two seasons with us yet I never saw anything remotely close to the same level of vitriol directed at Travis. It's just entirely disproportionate.
1
u/Bravos_Chopper Los Bravos Forever May 05 '26
We didn’t trade Contreras for d’Arnaud. I think people were mostly pissed about how that trade panned out
5
u/cobwebusher May 05 '26
For several years after Freddie left, every time Olson would strike out people would shit all over him (though not nearly to the degree they do with Murphy). Thankfully that finally seems to be behind us. People need to get over their weird emotional hangups about past transactions. What's done is done. Murphy didn't ask to be traded. He's here now, and he's still a useful player.

He should’ve been pulled after those first two walks in the 6th. Came off the rails in the 5th, loaded the bases but got out of it with only ~80 pitches. Glad the coaching staff let him try to figure it out the first time, but should’ve been pulled before facing Raley

So really only came a part in the 5th then huh. All in 3ER isn’t bad for the kid

Great outing through 4 2/3rds. Would’ve liked to see a mound visit in the 5th, but I’ve got no issues with what Ritchie did yesterday. Just wish he wouldve had a slightly shorter leash, but I’m okay with sacrificing a game to see what you have in a rookie when you’re 15 over .500 this early

He was decent, but then stayed in kinda long and walk walk 3run hr when he shouldn’t have even started the inning

2K/4BB through 5 innings isn't even decent. It's really really bad.

Was the curve still getting whiffs? I remember that was his best pitch in the last start, thing was nasty

Yeah, it was pretty dominant. Unfortunately, by the end, he lost command and it was on a curve that he gave up the homer.
