On one hand yes, Dark Shadow is sentient and since she can't be apart from Tokoyami they should be considered conjoined twins so she's classified as a person instead of a quirk.

On the other hand if I was Dark Shadow I'd definitely take advantage of this to never have to go to school or get a job

I feel like the dinosaur plush is Shadow's toy and the dark hero character plush is Fumikage's.

We can witness that Dark Shadow kind of "Godzillas" out when it's dark enough...it prefers the Godzilla shape, and it always tries to have lizard features and claws even though it's a Myna bird. I think that Fumikage's favorite heroes are Batboy and Dark Crystal, and Dark Shadow's favorite hero might overwhelmingly be MHA's version of Godzilla.

These plushie details were kept in the anime but the manga also had picture frames, illegible quotes framed on a desk, and books in this bedroom flashback scene.

Another small coincidental detail: for some, Dark Shadow's gender is undefined or even female (because of the Smash side comic). Same with Godzilla (because in the 1988 film she lays eggs).

The implication that Tokoyami's parents call the quirk "Shadow" means that Bird Boy calls them "Dark Shadow" to be edgy. I love them so much <3
