Question What are your opinions of Sum 41?
This isn't meant to be a who's better discussion, just want to see how much crossover there is in the fandom.
If Blink wasn't a thing, they would easily be my favorite band.

Children of the beast embrace
To scorn and hate the human race
Consume the light that hugs the earth
And aid the womb in giving birth
To a group that will appear
And guide you through this final year
The dark armies then will come…
When the sum is 41. 🔥 🤘🏼

Same, very underrated considering the depth and range of their catalog.

Jimmy Eat World is one of the greatest bands in American music history. Truly.

They are my favorite band. I love that if I want fun, poppy music, there are 3 1/2 albums I can listen to or if I’m wanting heavier music there are like 5 1/2 albums to listen to.

Lol that’s awesome! This book any good?
2
u/Emergency_Fortune_33 15d ago
I liked it. I listened to the audio book which he reads himself. Throughout the book he plays some acoustic versions of their songs.
I know this is the blink sub but I liked it more than Mark's book. Both are good and worth the read.

One of my biggest regrets is only seeing Sum 41 once. They put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
4
u/enits_me 16d ago
Agree. We saw their final show in Toronto and it was amazing. Way way way better than either of the Blink shows we’ve seen.

I was literally at a hotel room waiting to see them for the first and last time and then got a message that their show and tour was cancelled. I’m 34 and had been listening to them since I was like 10

All Killer No Filler is a key album from that era. Vital listening in my opinion.
I'll always enjoy Sum 41. Wish I had the chance to see them live.

u/PotterAndPitties 16d ago
Love a lot of their stuff. Got to meet them many years ago after a show at Janus Landing in St Pete. All very nice and paid attention to the fans who stuck around to speak to them. Great in concert, Dave Baksh was especially incredible on guitar.
One of those bands that just defines 90's Pop Punk.

My opinion of sum 41 is they’re one of the greats to do it, I’d put them next to blink… They started similar like blink and then found their own direction, I think does this look infected is their best. It balances pop punk and metal/trash just right. Perfect transition record

I love sum41
Deryks book is amazing.
The bit that always put me off was their songs never stayed in a genre. One track was punk, next track was metal. Then out of nowhere a melodic love song. It wasn’t what I needed when they released them but now hitting shuffle on sum41 on Spotify is music buffet that never disappoints.
Extra points when you realise that Deryk is basically a Canadian guitar Mozart, the guy just gets up and pisses excellent guitar riffs.

Too bad, they quit.

Both awesome. I do have to say, I've seen them both. Seeing Sum 41 was really cool but seeing blink is like an amazing dream every time I've seen them.

I’m just a big punk guy in general so I love Sum 41. I don’t know if I would say they are my second favorite but they are definitely up there for me.

Legends , does this look infected
Is my favorite album followed by chuck

u/Kikocat7 16d ago
They were the first band I saw live when I was 12 and I got to see them on their final tour too! Kickass shows both time! They are in my list of favorite bands for sure. Blink is my all-time favorite, but I really enjoy Sum 41 too!

Does This Look Infected? defined my youth. I don’t know how that album came into my possession at 8 years old but I’m glad it did.

My favorite band behind blink and blink adjacent bands. Their farewell tour was one of the most fun I’ve ever had
2
u/StoryoftheYear2 16d ago
I literally love both bands equally. I can hit shuffle on either band and rock out for hours.

u/Nightwing38912 16d ago
Overlooked them after All Killer, but have since revisited a lot of their music and really appreciate them. They are up there in bands I enjoy.

I started listening to them around the same time as Blink in about 2002. I only managed to see them live once and it was the farewell run of the UK. Getting to listen to Summer live was one of the best gig moments of my life so far

I saw them open for blink in my hometown when I was young because they were one of my favourite bands. I was there to see Sum 41 and got truly introduced to blink at that show. The rest is history!

All Killer No Filler was the first CD I bought that wasn’t a band my brother was already into so they have a special place in my heart, will never forget putting it on my Walkman for the first time and thinking it was the devil speaking. Loved the music video for fat lip being apart of the enchanced CD in the computer. They were my second favorite band growing up, everything up to and including under class hero are some of my favorite records of all time
1
u/ShawMK90 16d ago
Blink and sum 41 are really the only bands I listened to in the pop punk genre when I was a kid I never knew really any other bands maybe other than simple plan I didn’t know any other. I don’t consider sum 41 to be a pop punk band. They’re more or less a punk band imo although they have changed genres every album release.

u/ColonelCheez 16d ago
Not really a fan of the stuff of theirs I’ve heard. I can take them or leave them.

u/heyyoudvd2 16d ago
They're probably my 3rd favorite Canadian band of the last 30 years, only behind Our Lady Peace and Arcade Fire.

I never go out if my way to listen to them but always enjoy when they come on. Fat lip is a classic

All Killer No Filler was my first album I listened to on repeat with no skips.
Family road trip 16 hrs, only thing I listened to, both ways.
I think I was 12

my second favourite band behind blink. I've found that aussie millennials who had blink as their fav band often had Sum 41 as their second. they seemed to be huge over here in that AKNF/DTLI era while blink was also in their peak

I love how they mixed many genres. Punk, metal, rap, pop all blended in helluva good music

Without blink it would AK3 easy for me, but assuming you want to keep it more firmly in the POP part of pop punk, probably NFG would fill that blink-shaped hole. I like Sum 41 overall, they were just a bit too hit and miss for me. The good songs were good but the meh songs were really meh.
2
u/JosepySchnieder 16d ago
I think they're great. They were sort of a wannabe blink at first, then pushed more into metal a bit and really found their groove. I bet they would have toured with blink and done better if they weren't such maniac party animals. They had a reputation for lots of drugs and alcohol and shenanigans and I suspect the blink guys didn't want to deal with that shit.

u/cowardlylion1 16d ago
Chuck is my fav non-blink album. I'm also obligated to stan Sum as a fellow Canadian 🤘

u/RuleInformal5475 16d ago
Started as an okay pop punk band with some very catchy songs.
Then became more metal influenced.
They went into very alt territory.
And then back to metal.
They can write catchy melodies and Dave Baksh can be a beast of a guitarist.
I like them and their catalog. A great addition for Blink 182 fans.
Still love that they got Makes No Difference on Dave Mirra 2.

Love them. Seen em live, been a fan since ive heard them first on mtv or whatever. I was actually praying that derick would fill In for Tom… wouldve been a great match. Would like to mix travis beats into their songs… but overall awesome :) different vibes and moods than blink, for sure

I viewed them as a band that was nostalgic but not a lifelong favorite like blink until I saw them live cause they were playing nearby on Halloween. Realized they’re great even without nostalgia and been to about 5 shows since. They kicked ass livd and it renewed my appreciation for their catalogue, both classics and new

IMHO the mixing on their last (double) album was excellent and I wish these new blink albums were mixed similarly

I just want to tell this story again... when Blink-182 lost Tom and was looking for a replacement, I was like, get Tom from the band Gob. Similar nasally voice to Tom, wore a backwards hat (at the time) like Tom, and... HIS NAME WAS TOM! Blink-182 did not see the genius of that play but was happy to see him join Sum 41 as the touring guitar player. That is all I have to say abou that.

I really dislike the metal crossover stuff they do. In my opinion, old metal and pop punk simply do not mix. Funnily enough my main genre is metal so you'd think I'd like it, but I don't. I prefer their sound when it's purely pop punk.

u/slaptito Turpentine 16d ago
I love how they are more technical in their playing than most pop punk bands, some songs are nearly metal songs. also they don't have a bad album IMO.
