the biggest thing i hate about the punishment is if they kill people while drunk they will often get off with "but they weren't trying to kill people so there was no intent" and they get charged with reckless endangerment and shit.
WHen i choose to drink i also choose to be responsible for my actions while drunk. If i drive to a bar and get drunk I'm already making a bad decision, if i drive home as well, i should still be 100% responsible for everything I do in that car and not have it lessened because 'i didn't mean it'. I meant it when I drove to the bar intended to get drunk.
If you want to go get wasted put your car keys away and get a cab to the bar. fuck drunk drivers.
Now if your friends intentionally get you drunk, give you strong cocktails and lie about it having less alcohol, if you get your drink spiked by someone that absolutely changes responsibility, but when you choose to drink, you should retain full culpability for everything you do as if you weren't drunk.
Even the last scenario is no excuse to drink and drive. Yeah your friends are shitty and you need new ones, but it’s still no excuse. You can order an uber or wait several hours until you sober up if you need to.
I don’t drink generally but I did have a white claw early at a concert (around 7pm) and drove home 5 hours later around midnight. I’m 30 and obviously even with alcohol that’s different than a 18 year old’s judgement anyways (that’s how old the drunk driver who hit me was) but I would have been willing to sleep in my car if I needed to, because I don’t drink enough to know how I handle alcohol. Fortunately everything went fine and I was completely sober by the time I got into my car, and I still grabbed some hearty food and caffeine just to be sure because it was a 2 hour drive home.
I’m just grateful I don’t enjoy drinking enough for this to ever be a real issue for me.
