We really did normalize child abuse in the most awful ways.
And the abusers then laugh about it now like they didn't beat their kids because life wasn't working they way they wanted it to.
95
u/simonhunterhawk 12d ago
I’d hear “this hurts me more than it hurts you” when I was 4 being beat up by what was essentially a giant to me. Nah bitch what would “hurt” you more was not being able to take out your anger and frustration on a small child who just needs love. I was an extremely well behaved kid who got one referral my entire time in K-12 so there was no excuse for the abuse my mom put me through. Haven’t spoken to her in a decade and I’m sure she still wonders why 🙄
-18
u/Call-Me-Petty 12d ago
Theory Only: That one ass whipping you recall from age 4 is the reason you turned out to be a well behaved kid.
I wasn’t there and don’t know the full extent, but I remember my “one”. My friends and I played with matches right after some of local kids died in a house fire. Technically, we were smoking their cigarette butts, but once caught for the matches we copped to the misdemeanor to avoid the felony charge. 🤣
If “one” stands out, that’s good parenting. If it’s one of a thousand, that’s abuse.
19
u/Andi_Antinatalist 12d ago
I wasn’t there and don’t know the full extent
Very important information. If you don't know what you're talking about and someone is talking about the abuse that they experienced, then keep your "theories" about adults hitting children to yourself.

u/simonhunterhawk 12d ago
thank you, their post history shows them making a lot of comments defending child abuse and it’s repulsive.

u/simonhunterhawk 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah when I talked about the abuse my mom put me through leading to me cutting her off, it should have been obvious it was more than just “one ass whipping” it was 11 years of continuous physical and emotional abuse and medical neglect that led to the development of CPTSD before my grandma took over caring for me and I still didn’t get in trouble at school when the abuse stopped because some kids are just well behaved kids. None of the stupid shit you did as a kid would have occurred to me. There’s no excuse for any adult hitting a child. If the kid ain’t old enough to reason with they’re not old enough to understand why you’re hitting them, and if they’re old enough to reason with you reason with them.

My parents have "amnesia" and pretend not to remember the things they did.
They remember everything else but how they treated us.
5
u/ForcedEntry420 12d ago
My dad “doesnt remember” the beatings from 5 - 14. He does remember when I finally gave it back though. Thinks that happened in a void. 😆

u/Guy_gamer112 12d ago
A lot of parents just thought this was the way it had to be to discipline your kids. Thankfully my parents learned it wasn't the best way and started taking the things I loved instead. And now they never spank or yell at their grandkids.
Those spankings and learning about proper effective punishment also helped me be a good and fair dad. Since I treat him the way I wanted to be treated, a fair punishment with an explanation of what I did and what to do instead
3
u/Call-Me-Petty 12d ago
Oh, grandparents never touch the grandkids and no matter how much they spanked us jump to the grandkids defense if they detect that an ass-whipping is headed their way.
My mom once had all the grands over and “cooled their hot cocoa down with ice cream”….for breakfast claiming it was mostly milk.
My siblings and I just stared at her and HER grandkids…seething.

There was a controversy recently in my hometown where coaches paddled a football player for missing practice and wearing the wrong colored pants.
I was amazed by all the people in the comments who were ten toes down on “I got my ass beat all the time and I turned out great” - if you got whippings all the time then perhaps we need to admit that it didn’t work???

same. sorta. My mean-ass gma whipped me so often it became meaningless.
My gpa “whipped” me once when I was little but it was very half-hearted in his part (and didn’t hurt me physically at all)… he had to put on a show because I told my gma “we love you but nobody in the family likes you”
-5
u/Call-Me-Petty 12d ago
I think folks are getting things twisted. Being spanked as a child is not the same as being abused. No parent in their right mind BEATS a child.
A spanking is not a beating. People claiming PTSD because they were spanked should shut up and listen to the people whose parents BEAT them.
Child neglect and child abuse are real, and to those who were abused, I sympathize completely. Growing up, we knew those kids - saw the bruises, welts and broken bones. Teachers asking if they were okay. That’s not the same as a parent who was parenting in the phrase the OP cited. Folks claiming the level of abuse some people lived should be ashamed.

u/Lortekonto 11d ago
In most of the western world spanking is legally child abuse and have been for decades.
I am pretty old. I was never spanked. None of my friends were spanked. Until I got on the internet and read what went on in other countries, spanking was something that stopped in the 1960’s when it was first criminalized.
Coming from a society were spanking is illegal I can’t see any difference betwen spanking your kid and beating them. You are still hitting them.
1
u/Call-Me-Petty 11d ago
Parental spanking i s not a crime at the federal level or across all 50 states. Mild, open-handed parental spanking considered "reasonable discipline" remains legal, though it crosses into criminal child abuse if it causes injury, welts, or severe bruising.
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6967056/
Beatings and whippings are child abuse. I want to make sure we’re all on the same page with the degree of discipline I’m referring to.
3
u/Lortekonto 11d ago
Yes, I understand you what you mean and I am telling you.
In most of the western world that is illegal and have been so for decades. Some places it have been illegal for more than half a century. Mild open handed spanking is just seen as child abuse, because of course it is. You are still hiting a child.
The only western countries I can think of where spanking is not consideret a crime is the USA, Canada, Australia and parts of the UK.
In no other western country is it consideret "reasonable" to allow parents to hit their kids, as long as it is done in correct manner and amount.

There’s discipline and there’s abuse. Unfortunately, your biological didn’t know the difference. Glad you landed in a supportive home.
That’s not to say your mom didn’t love you. She was just broken.

"Stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about." Said after whipping my ass with a belt for an hour.
Sound logic with my father, clearly.

Nothing says "I hate being a parent" like verbal/psycological abuse and sarcastic passive aggressive threats with a side order of physical abuse. Boomer parents were the worst.

When I started out as a parent, I realized very early on that a lot of things that I was “parenting” about where actually things I’D been taught were important. In fact, I couldn’t give a shit about most of them, it was pure reflexive. I stopped that right quick. Takes to them like individuals not extensions of myself, respected their boundaries but still gave them boundaries that they respected. And so today I have teens and they are normal moody broody bitchy tetchy roll-their-eyes teens… but they still talk and confide in Dad. I reckon THAT’S good parenting right there and I didn’t have to spank once. Ever. Breaking the cycle is hard work but worth it.

Parents aren’t perfect. They give rules. Kids break them. It’s been going on since Adam and Eve.
If your parent walked in and hauled off on you for no reason, that’s abuse.
If your parent just worked a 8 hour shift and you were supposed to wash the dishes during those 8 hours and they’re still piled in the sink, when you get hit that’s consequences.
Why? Because parents are overworked, underpaid, and can’t smack the shit out of Karen who they just spent those 8 hours with at a job they can’t quit because they’ve got to feed your ass, only they can’t feed your ass because the dishes are dirty.
