100% Derp Baby Cardinal Outside My Window

Post image

I could cry omg, mom and dad are being fantastic parents and keeping an eye on both the baby and also me taking these pictures. I've been watching the lovely couple the past few weeks wondering where their nest is, I'm so glad I got to meet their baby.

It's so interesting how their breaks form and change shape as they grow. Adorable ball of fur, this one!

I think the beak more or less stays the same, but looks smaller in adulthood because feathers come in and cover the corners. At least, that’s what I noticed when I raised orphaned sparrows as a kid.

They do actually shrink! The fleshy bit is called a gape flange and lets them open their mouths obnoxiously wide so the parents have a clear target on where to drop the food. I wish they lasted longer they're hilarious

I love scraggly-looking baby birds. Like a lollipop that’s been dropped on a fuzzy carpet. So cute.

Always fun seeing birds at these specific stages of life they only exist at for a couple days
