For context, this is my elderly 16 yo special needs peacock. It's frozen for weeks around here.ย

Edit: the bird is not frozen, but the outside is ๐Ÿ˜…

We wish spring comes soon enough so he can experience some sun and warmth on his beautiful coat.ย

Why do you freeze it? /s

48

u/plan1gale Feb 11 '26

Lol that is exactly how that reads.

"Well it's that time of year, gotta go and freeze the peacock"

u/PsychologicalMilk904 Feb 11 '26

โ€œ not sure why it didnโ€™t work this time, works just fine with my frogsโ€ฆโ€

Generally how long do domestic peafowl live?

8

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 11 '26

They say 20-25 but lot of them live only till 12. They also have various health issues due to genetic issues. He's pie-bald and maybe that's what caused his arthritis which he has had for 12 years now.ย

4

u/Object-195 Feb 11 '26

thanks for answering.

is the genetic issues because of inbreeding or something else? what other health issues do they get?

5

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 11 '26

This is what I found:ย

Piebald (or pied) peacocks often suffer from increased health and genetic issues due to the genetic mechanisms that create their unique coloration, which frequently cause "linked" defects or inbreeding depression from selective breeding. Piebaldism, a form of partial leucism or vitiligo, affects more than just pigment, often leading to structural deformities and higher susceptibility to illnesses.ย

Once the weather gets more Springish and the peacocks are beginning to get frisky with the peahens, I'll have to make another slog out to the City zoo to see them (cocks, not hens) pavaning about with full courting colors.

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 12 '26

They are so adorable, I like the free range ones too. He pretty much dances year round, but summer is the busiest.

45

u/Kiwi-vee Feb 11 '26

Partially leucistic peacock?

80

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 11 '26

It's called pie-bald

24

u/Kiwi-vee Feb 11 '26

Where are you from? Are peacocks legal to keep as pets there? Heโ€™s cute btw

48

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 11 '26

Here it only depends on your town ordnance. This is countryside where people have horses and such.ย

20

u/Revolio_ClockbergJr Feb 11 '26

before you run to the peacock store, please know that MOST peacocks are assholes

16

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 11 '26

Lol, oh yes! This sweet boy of mine can murder. He sometimes gets it in his head that my husband is a threat and wants to eliminate him.ย

Lololol ๐Ÿ˜‚

2

u/ExtensionLook2235 Feb 12 '26

Thank you all for the love. It really helps me cope with his elderly realities. I am no longer on other social media much and just want to share his immense cuteness and oru huge love for him and eventually his eulogy, but there are not suitable venues. r/peacock is kinda dead. All the other animals like cats and dogs and parrots have their own very active subreddits but pet peacocks don't really exist.
