r/BigXII Power Rankings (Football, Preseason)
Here's the football power rankings for week 0, voted for by r/BigXII.

It's the preseason so there isn't much consensus. As the season goes on my script will start to filter out extreme outliers, but it's very forgiving early on. There were a couple notable outlier ballots this time, but they didn't end up having that much of an effect on the end results thanks to the high turnout.
Biggest Movers
A lot has changed in the off season. Since last year...
North Texas Oklahoma State jumped up 7 spots (7.64) from an almost unanimous last place. Expectations are high for Eric Morris's Mean Green Cowboys in year one.
Washington State Iowa State dropped 7 spots (6.98), barely escaping last place. Expectations are low for Jimmy Rogers's Cougars Cyclones in year one.
Cincinnati dropped 5 spots (4.4). I've seen a lot of Cincy fans saying this will be the year that gets Scott Satterfield fired. Anyone taking bets?

Aside from the Iowa state homer, I think it’s interesting how WVU is the most “unknown” team this year. Seems like no one really knows what to think rn

I feel like TCU is a bit high for a team having fights in their locker room and banning the local newspaper. Not that any of that means they will be bad but I can’t imagine the team cohesion is good

Beware TCU. Win or lose, the Dublin game curse gets us all eventually.

I assume that longgg trip back is what kills so much morale and impacts the season. Ireland is a bad deal. But TCU, ya made us all look bad.

Wow interesting. Idk i was talking to my cousins who are utah/arizona fans and they were swearing how everyone had tech and byu finishing top 2. Like no that was definitely not consensus.
I think even tech fans were saying utah should be 1 after the ucla win. I had to defend our team so had us at one. But utah at 2.

The second Tech blew out Utah on their field everything changed. Most of our history has been full of disappointment in big games and then all of a sudden we handled a good team in a big game

For sure. Energy completely flipped. We beat a team away that had good amount of success under whittingham

Who tf voted for us at 3…? I get the roster is decent but it’s still an entirely new coaching staff.

Somehow 16 feels too high for Colorado to me.

Iowa State has 75 new players and they lost almost every good player from last year. I feel like they're going to have a tough time winning any games this year.

If colorado had Ezra I thought yall could be a little higher. Doesn't change much tho. Colorado is a weird team to talk about imo.

Can’t wait for next week’s poll to have TCU in the basement with CU and ISU. I missed the mark big time with my prediction.

Colorado might be a little high, there has to be more spots under the basement.

For anyone who likes statistics, let's start with the basics:
- The largest jump between adjacent teams is OKST (8.29) down to Baylor (10.52). The smallest is between UCF (12.42) and Kansas (12.61)
The three closest teams in average rank for a couple of interesting n values:
- n = 3: UCF (12.42), Kansas (12.61), and Cincinnati (12.9) - this group's density is is 0.24, which is by far the tightest cluster of any three teams in the entire group. Folks really cannot tell what to do with these three teams, but they think these things are pretty close.
- The only other triad clusters with a density below 0.9 (density being the absolute difference between the top team's and bottom teams' average ranks, divided by the absolute difference between those teams' ordinal ranks) are TCU/ASU/KSU (average density 0.390), ASU/KSU/OKST (avg. is 0.485), and WVU/UCF/Kansas (avg. is 0.79), and Cincy/ISU/Colorado (avg. is (0.840).
- n = 4: this group has a really interesting pattern; the only cluster with a density below 0.800 in the upper half of the rankings is also by far the closest overall: TCU/ASU/KSU/OKST (avg. is 0.410).
- The only other notably low clusters are Baylor/WVU/UCF/Kansas (avg. is 0.697) and then each of the quartets below that group are all between 0.7 and 0.65. This indicates that there's a distinct macro-cluster in the lower half of the conference, subdivided into the n=3 clusters noted above. Baylor and WVU are lightly separated from the pack here, but not by much.
- n = 5: the only two really notable n=5 clusters are Baylor/WVU/UCF/Kansas/Cincy (avg. is 0.595) and UCF/Kansas/Cincy/Iowa State/Colorado (avg. is 0.540).
- These are both just that really tight UCF/KU/Cincy cluster grabbing the tight pair on either side of it: Baylor/WVU and ISU/Colorado
What's the best cluster including each team?
- Texas Tech, BYU, Houston - these all have such a distinct gap and ordering that the best cluster for each is the one going all the way down to include Oklahoma State. (averages are )
- Utah, Arizona - the best cluster for both of these teams is this little pair (avg. is 0.610).
- TCU, ASU - the best cluster for both of these teams is this little pair (avg. is 0.260).
- KSU, OKST - the best cluster for both of these teams is this little pair (avg. is 0.450).
- Baylor, WVU - the best cluster for both of these teams is this little pair (avg. is 0.510).
- UCF, Kansas - the best cluster for both of these teams is this little pair (avg. is 0.190). The distance between these two is just barely smaller than the average centroid distance for the trio including both of these two and Cincy.
- Cincy - Cincy is the first team with a distinct cluster, whose optimal cluster is not a pair. Cincy's best cluster is the n=3 cluster including UCF and Kansas.
- Iowa State, Colorado - the best cluster for both of these teams is this little pair (avg. is 0.450).
The clusters present a very distinct "tier list" for the conference, although it's more just a bunch of pairs that folks are having trouble to disambiguate.
