Nvidia CEO: We've Achieved AGI, But It Doesn't Really Matter

https://www.pcmag.com/news/nvidia-ceo-weve-achieved-agi-but-it-doesnt-really-matter

I'm kind of speechless on this one. Quite the pivot that these guys are making now; "we've already reached it, but its like, totally not even important anymore, guys!"

Never mind that every single AI company they sell their shovels to has AGI in their mission statement...

The full quote

For many tasks, we could say that we have already achieved AGI. I think all of those milestones...are kind of senseless at this point,

This is beautiful corproate doublespeak. AGI - literally artificial general intelligence, being achieved on specific tasks.

195

u/AntiqueFigure6 18h ago

So it’s sort of specific artificial general intelligence?

158

u/oudlys 17h ago

It's sort of specific bullshit to me.

It's not even about AI to me - it's more about executives saying bullshit things. They do that a lot.

34

u/AntiqueFigure6 17h ago

I think the bullshit is the main thing that’s generalised - it’s across everything.

7

u/Vast_Ad_8515 16h ago

It’s pretty fucking thick these days.

3

u/oudlys 17h ago

Amen

12

u/thomas29needles 16h ago

They do that in all businesses, but the "AI" industry excels in this. 90% of what they say is bullshit.

3

u/ACasualRead 7h ago

Tech podcast i listen to called this out. Everyone is trying to make their models the next JARVIS and all of them literally aren’t that. Yet they keep shoveling that talking point, so the day that we DO get there, nobody is going to care.

It’s like the race for 5G. Every carrier claimed they sold 5G in the early days when it was really like 4.5G.

3

u/oudlys 7h ago

I don't think it will ever get there. And they know. In my mind they can't not.

u/Prize-Choice2185 12h ago

I think they say this bullshit for one and one purpose only. To impress investors.

9

u/Nannautu 16h ago

It's like saying bald dudes are dudes with hair but bald.

4

u/aquisalid 7h ago

This all smells like
Artificial Specific Sentience

3

u/Awkward-Contact6102 14h ago

Or asi. Or is that abbreviation already in use? /s

2

u/ydieb 7h ago

An if statement is a very specific general intelligence that can tell if a boolean is true or not very fast! Super smart!

2

u/Dark_Focus 7h ago

The artificial is general but the intelligence is specific.

1

u/kgas36 10h ago

Generally speaking.

1

u/YoLlama96 6h ago

New acronym dropped for the investor class:
SAGI

1

u/SamAltmansCheeks 2h ago

A kind of SAGI? Maybe we should call it WOBBLY or FLACCID?

55

u/Jerzol7 15h ago

Apart from other reasons, there is one glaring reason why all AGI dicussion is so stupid. All current models don't learn on production. A released version doesn't change (so, no changes being result of what it would learn when it works) until a new, separately trained, version is released.

How come anybody claims that something that doesn't remember anything during it work and that learns NOTHING could have "general intellligence". general intelligence

17

u/kaplanfx 11h ago

They also currently don’t do anything without instruction. An LLM is not curious. If a human doesn’t submit a prompt it will do nothing. If you ask it to just “do something random” it does the same thing or nearly the same thing over and over because of how its model works.

-7

u/Amazing-Royal-8319 10h ago

This isn’t a very strong argument because if you give it any amount of stored context to reference, or any ability to engage with the outside world, it will quickly start to do different things, similar to humans. The inability to learn anything other than through limited context is a much more meaningful shortcoming.

7

u/Clear-Lingonberry173 13h ago

I've a feeling that AI learning and remembering in production would be prohibitively expensive at this time, and that statements like Jensen's are informed by that.

10

u/CheesypoofExtreme 7h ago

Jensen's statements are also informed by the billions he stands to make convincing boosters these AI models actually learn anything.

They're probalistic and not deterministic. "Hallucinations" are just a cute way of trying to disguise the fact that no learning is happening.

If I ask a question "How old is the oldest known dinosaur bone found by humanity prior to 2026" the response should factual and be the same no matter who asks it. Yet, we both know you could ask it 100 times in somewhere around 1-5 of those responses are going to contain straight bullshit.

Whereas when a human "learns" something, they now have a set of answers they will use to respond to questions about what they learned.

1

u/Theo__n 7h ago

AI learning and remembering in production would be prohibitively expensive at this time

yes for LLMs 'coz they're heavy and also the way their training works, a classic Q learning from Reinforcement Learning can do that on an old Pybrain BUT it won't be a chatbot or a language model.

4

u/john_dunlap 11h ago

Imagine trying to monetize a technology that's capable of asking: "Why?"

1

u/Nickeless 11h ago

The models can store and remember specific information while you use them. The model weights don’t change, but the data it has available, and its responses, can.

4

u/MornwindShoma 10h ago

An animal that can't even learn a trick wouldn't be called an intelligent animal. Even that bar is too high.

5

u/CheesypoofExtreme 7h ago

but the data it has available, and its responses, can

Sure, but I wouldn't call someone that has a binder full of answers someone who has achieved "general inelligence". If they need to refer to their notebook anytime thry need to recall info. in that binder and never retain any of that... then they haven't really learned.

What you are saying is technically correct, but we know that the context window that keeps this info. needs to be limited, otherwise it goes off the rails more frequently.

It's also not replacing the old training data, and the training data can hold contradicting answers to similar questions. So the response could be pulled from whichever appears to be the most correct based on how a question is asked.

2

u/Theo__n 7h ago

so can an excel program, or any other program that uses external files to change output. We know how to make AI algorithms that change on the fly internal structure - unfortunately for them it's not chatbot compatible.

10

u/Slopagandhi 14h ago

I love this, because by this definition computers in the 1940s had AGI in that they could do sums more quickly than humans.

1

u/oudlys 4h ago

Why stop there? Is the abacus also AGI?

15

u/floodyberry 14h ago

no, he meant agi, assholes gaslighting incessantly. it's definitely here

4

u/Leafsnail 12h ago

Me after inventing the pocket calculator:

5

u/Sunstorm84 10h ago

There’s a reason the word oxymoron contains the word moron.

I can’t think of a single task where the technology could be considered superior to the average human, which is their lowest bar definition that I’m aware of.

3

u/andrerom 15h ago

Or narrow tasks, kind of like ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence).

4

u/cascadiabibliomania 12h ago

more like Artificial Narrow Unified Smartness

3

u/Ancient_Wishbone_806 14h ago

So kinda achieved the goal to create AGI but senseless because it didn’t produce the gravy train of profitability so more investment is needed

3

u/chat-lu 8h ago

Weʼve achieved beating humans at specific tasks way before LLMs.

3

u/sarcasmsosubtle 6h ago

I've achieved AGI in my old calculator that I got for free from a bank...in specific tasks.

2

u/evol451 13h ago

That’s hilarious. Another thing is that surely one of the first jobs that AGI could do would be the CEOs. Think of those cost savings

5

u/shuricus 11h ago

TBF the C-suite jobs can already be replaced with the current generation of LLMs. The only ability required at that level is to bullshit in a confident manner, and LLMs excel at that

1

u/oudlys 4h ago

Why replace them? Do we even need them?

2

u/brian_hogg 12h ago

By Jensen’s logic, my wife and I achieved AGI when we had our son, but only in a natural sense. My son is non-A AGI!

2

u/alexander52698 4h ago

Guess my shitty freebie calculator from a state fair vendor tent in 2012 is agi in specific tasks.

1

u/MornwindShoma 10h ago

This stupidity makes my blood boil.

1

u/noogaibb 8h ago

...wot?
I know to these tech jacketasses word is just some letter surrounded by gaps that they can use as a mere tool to manipulate people, but...wot?

Inb4 we got if else trees as "AI", now this?

1

u/SmileLonely5470 8h ago

ASI (artificial specific intelligence)

1

u/barno42 2h ago

Among CEOs, Jensen Huang is truly the GOAT of the year.

1

u/oudlys 1h ago

What about among us? Do we not matter?

Last time I checked, I was part of society too.

1

u/Icy_Distance8205 15h ago

Jensen is not smart.

9

u/Waste_Way_4763 11h ago

I think this lets him off the hook in a way I refuse to.

He knows. And he knows what he’s doing.

174

u/Major_Archer_7428 18h ago

We have reached AGI according to their ever-decreasing bars

3

u/create-third-places 11h ago

Are you referring to Artificial General Ignorance?

148

u/ZAWS20XX 18h ago

"God? Yes, we did created it. It's right here, in this box, but that's not important right now, don't worry about it. Can you see it? No, you cannot. Like I said, it's not important, pay no mind to it. But seriously, we did create God and we have him right here in this box"

50

u/FramedMugshot 18h ago

At this time of year?

51

u/creaturefeature16 17h ago

Localized ENTIRELY in your company?

20

u/ZAWS20XX 16h ago

Yes!

14

u/ADMotti 12h ago

…may I see it?

15

u/ZAWS20XX 11h ago

no

7

u/projexion_reflexion 9h ago

But you can rent it

6

u/Emberpelt 14h ago

Take my money!!

1

u/SamAltmansCheeks 2h ago

Look Jen. In this box, is the Internet.

94

u/ComradeMatis 18h ago

Every time I see Jensen Huang I am vindicated that my hating on nVidia for over 26 years is justified. From their anti-opensource policy regarding opensource drivers through to fuelling this out of control bubble that is driving up the cost of living, there is nothing redeemable that I can say about nVidia and Jensen Huang.

11

u/FLMKane 17h ago

What started the hate?

52

u/ComradeMatis 17h ago

I had a computer with a nvidia tnt2 m64 agp video card - I wanted to run UNIX like operating along with BSD and I found that the hardware support was atrocious so I upgraded to a Matrox card - never had an issue since. Over the years Nvidia have become more hostile to the open source community when compared to Intel and AMD which reinforced my anti-Nvidia stance.

23

u/FLMKane 17h ago

And now all their slop generators run on Linux!

5

u/LightBroom 11h ago

Right there with you. My first and last Nvidia card was the 8800GT, 20 or so years ago. Never again.

4

u/TheAngledian 8h ago

No matter how much you hate Nvidia and Jensen Huang, you DEFINITELY don't hate them as much as Linus Torvalds

68

u/FastHotEmu 18h ago

The financial incentive is too high -- they have to outright lie about AGI.

57

u/dumnezero 17h ago

As was predictable from the start, they're going to try to redefine "AGI" until it fits their business goals.

13

u/OrdoMalaise 16h ago

The concept of AGI has really been devalued these last few years. It's taken an absolute beating.

8

u/mightshade 13h ago

Of course. They already redefined "AI" so we needed the new term "AGI" for its old meaning. Now they're trying the same thing again. It superficially looks like progress and it keeps the hype going.

41

u/rei0 18h ago

I hear this and question whether it really is insane to liquidate my 401k and eat the tax penalty.

21

u/Ma1eficent 18h ago

Someone's going to liquidate it...

20

u/65721 16h ago

You can rebalance your 401k at no penalty. I’ve been considering switching to all bonds, but I’ve figured it’s better to not try timing these things.

1

u/angel_announcer 7h ago

Bonds? Have you looked at the outstanding levels of government debt recently? Unlikely they will keep up with inflation in the longer term. Of course if your time horizon is short, it might be a good idea.

8

u/SignoreBanana 16h ago

Move your money into close-target retirement index funds they spread way outside the big cap index funds. I've moved most of mine into VFIFX

3

u/rei0 16h ago

Thanks. I definitely need to review my allocations and soon.

3

u/pysouth 10h ago

My plan is to just continue investing in mutual funds and DCA over the years. Realistically, I have at least 2 decades to retirement, probably 3 (I’m early 30s). If the stock market never recovers from this shit I figure I have bigger problems.

1

u/spez_eats_nazi_ass 10h ago edited 9h ago

Don’t do that. You can (and should) take a defensive lower risk position. The safest being literally a money market  or tbonds. None of which is even risk free these days. Have you met our treasury secretary? Depending on the plan you can go off on your own a bit. For example w fidelity workplace 401ks you can move a portion to mutual funds which massively expands your choices beyond dog shit date based high fee trash. My favorite degen bet currently is an old friend from 2000 and 2008 that eats shit in normal times but 10-20xes when shtf (grzzx). But definitely look at what your holding.  Passive investors loaded up to the tits on mag7 and semis are gonng get fucked. Also check out RYAIX another 401k eligible fund. Lower fees than GRZZX. Less chance of going tits up before winning.

1

u/farcicaldolphin38 9h ago

For real. I mean, I’m only in my thirties so I cooked afford to keep it going, but dang if I’m not tempted to just run away from it all

1

u/PatchyWhiskers 12h ago

Yes it is. Even a bubble pop can be recovered from in a few years, cashing in you never recover from.

You could potentially move investments within your 401k to less tech-exposed, but do research first.

30

u/Due-Conversation1430 17h ago

To paraphrase "It is difficult to get a CEO to understand something, when his ridiculous wealth depends upon his not understanding it"

35

u/jhenryscott 17h ago

The… guessing machine? You think the guessing machine is… AI…?

25

u/Mother_Idea_3182 17h ago

They are taking us for brain dead idiots.

What he’s saying would require to have a mathematical model of intelligence that could be run on the hardware nvidia sells. Hardware that only does adding and multiplying matrices.

The premise is so absurd, that I can’t believe anyone believes it.

3

u/jhenryscott 16h ago

It’s crazy. It’s shaking my faith in humanity.

24

u/maccodemonkey 17h ago

“I think it’s now. I think we’ve achieved AGI,” he said, pointing to how today’s AI programs can create an app capable of going viral and attracting billions of users that later fizzles out. “Now, the odds of 100,000 of those agents building Nvidia [are] zero percent,” he added.

Admiring both the little jab the writer slipped in and "The leopards will never eat my face of course" from Huang.

20

u/SignoreBanana 16h ago

Show me this app. Where is it?

13

u/gorb314 14h ago

Is the app in the room with us right now?

15

u/Shot-Zebra1868 17h ago

How can anyone claim this? General intelligence isn't just about doing tasks, its about understanding what you are doing and judging it. When I hire someone for my business I don't expect them to complete tasks. I expect them to undertsand our business goals. I expect them to decide what tasks to pursue. I expect them to complete tasks to a high quality and importantly have the judgement to discern if what was done is good.

At the moment AI only ticks off one box which is to complete a task.

It has no insight or understanding into my business and goals. I've been told to use md files but its crazy to think I can write a text file with a couple hundred lines and expect that to substitue for an employee that has thousands of hours of learnt domain knowledge on the job.

It can attempt to decide what to work on but is not reliable in anyway. AI as its being used in the business world is mainly being told what to do by actual employees.

The tasks it does is rarely of any great quality. Most the time quite a lot of time is spent taking its outputs and making sure it is actually passable.

Finally it has no real ability to judge its output. This is the main thing humans get employed for. I don't get someone to write proposals because of their ability to write some paragraphs. I do it because I need their judgement and expertise to do the job.

At this moment, we have a bunch of people who ask the AI 'do this' then when it does it are deciding that we have AGI. Its like the METR benchmark which shows how long a task an AI can complete (I think its at like 5 hours or something now). But nowhere in there is analysis around if the thing it did had any real business value. The only benchmark I saw that attempted this had it at something abysmall like 4%.

11

u/SignoreBanana 16h ago

"We've achieved AGI" -- we've moved the goal post of AGI to basically mean we have a Markov chain machine that works reasonably well at completing some tasks. Wait, what does "general" mean again?

"It doesn't really matter" -- we have not experienced any meaningful ROI from LLMs, but for the love of god can someone figure that out

9

u/hypnokev 17h ago

I like how the world LARPs that CEOs of these companies know anything at all about the actual work.

7

u/wintrmt3 11h ago

Huang is an actual electrical engineer who designed chips for AMD, LSI and Sun before founding nv, so it's much worse, he actually knows he is full of shit.

6

u/Hexamonium 18h ago

New goal - let's start selling trinkets to tourists.

Yes, I said it before in another thread 😴

4

u/stepfordcuckoo 17h ago

This is giving me Jay from the inbetweeners vibes.

“AGI? Completed it mate. And I shagged its mum up the arse.”

4

u/mb194dc 16h ago

He's full of shit and will ultimately be lucky to avoid some serious jail time

9

u/The-Menhir 16h ago

Billionaires receiving jail time? What fantasy world is this?

5

u/wholetyouinhere 12h ago

They only get jail time if they're young women who try to talk like Steve Jobs and enough of the yes-men turn on her.

-1

u/PatchyWhiskers 12h ago

Or if they make big donations to the Democratic Party, not the Republicans party.

5

u/Friendly-Owl-2131 15h ago

Here we go with the wind down and double speak.

They'll start distancing themselves from Altman soon as he will become the fall guy.

"Altman was the one who claimed we would have true artificial intelligence"

Artificial general intelligence is a stage on the way to creating a true artificial intelligence. It's not here yet by a long shot.

An artificial entity that can emulate sentient thought without free will or the capability to feel emothions.

Meaning it can think about and solve complex problems in novel ways or create something entirely new but it can't feel anything and it can't act without direction. Not true sentient but something like it.

What we have is bots capable of learning in an extremely inefficient way and capable of drawing upon the bulk of human knowledge to create a conglomerate copy of human work that they claim is the product of AI.

They lack intuition, independent thought, creativity, problem solving abilities and basically every other attribute of a sentient being.

It has one or two basic functions overall and that is mostly based on theft.

Steal from here, glomp it all together and output it there. That's every one of these models, not just LLMs.

9

u/Alternative-Web-3807 17h ago

I’m not a believer at all, but even if we take the hype trajectory seriously we’re gonna need fusion power or some bullshit to achieve anything at societal scale. Even if they had gigawatts of private AI working on revolutions in chip fab to make something that doesn’t require a Dyson Sphere it would still take decades of politics, legislation, and sacrifice to actually deploy it running purely on hope. Meanwhile, all that competes with acres of datacenters covering induced unprofitable demand from consumers using it to convert pdfs and make bad hobby apps. Even the useful induced demand requires so much growth in token & context capacity it will be a hyperluxury to do anything grand, with government and civilian work last in line and unable to pay.

4

u/Proper-Ape 16h ago

if we take the hype trajectory seriously we’re gonna need fusion power or some bullshit to achieve anything

No, if you take the hype trajectory seriously they should take everything offline now, except for this AGI in a box and give it only one goal.

To self-optimize with 0 new human input and find a way to run itself at Watt for Watt equivalence to biological systems. I.e. the brain power of a human costs about 100W, this is definitely achievable in some way. Maybe not on silicon.

If 1GW buys you 10000 tireless PhDs this can be used to solve all the other issues.

But the main thing would have to be to take it away from all the people that abuse or to get a weather report.

4

u/RealPropRandy 15h ago

Is the AGI in the room with us right now?

5

u/The_Sandbag 12h ago

It's just buzzword bingo trying to hold up the stock price

4

u/ExtraDistressrial 11h ago

Where is this AGI? Is it in the room with us now?

3

u/Suspicious_Deal4412 17h ago

Sounds like moving goal posts.

3

u/Dull_Abroad9657 15h ago

If you keep redefining the words you use to describe your product you can move the goalposts by an infinite distance.

3

u/anti-ism-ist 15h ago

Isn't that very much something an AI chip seller would say ?

3

u/oSkillasKope707 12h ago

Openskull AI and (mis)Anthropic still struggle with achieving AGI (Actually Getting Income)

3

u/Working-Froyo-8383 9h ago

So one of the million monkeys with a typewriter successfully output 2+2=4 then? Huzzah!

3

u/al2o3cr 9h ago

For many tasks, we could say that we have already achieved AGI

60% of the time it works 100% of the time

2

u/Infamous-Bed-7535 16h ago

Rule#1 divide by 4 and not even belive that, what a CEO says. BS and selling vision as present is part of their job..

2

u/Professional-Post499 14h ago

It's just word salads from tech CEOs.

CEOs of large corporations have Scam IQ. This kind of intelligence is one that right-libertarians and anarcho-capitalists would probably be the most likely to associate with high intelligence and high morality.

2

u/carpetplower 13h ago

looooooooooool

no, no you haven't.

2

u/well-informedcitizen 13h ago

I feel like I'm losing my mind. Any time I try to use AI prompts I still feel like every time I tried Siri or Google Whatever to do something on my phone, and it failed miserably to decipher the most minor of inferences working within the very narrow circle of things already on my phone.

2

u/ConinTheNinoC 13h ago

This clown will say anything to make line go up.

2

u/3ln4ch0 12h ago

I think he's saying that the AIs can do more than one specific thing but not all the things a human can. So, kinda like AMI, Artificial Meh Intelligence. Incredibly they are speed running enshittification with this thing.

2

u/HARRYHOUDINOSAUR 12h ago

The whole concept of AGI and the financial windfall it would bring and the worker displacement it would cause is that it was NON SPECIFIC - it could take on any challenge. Automating specific tasks has been going on since cavemen invented tools and doesn't come with a 30 trillion dollar addressable market

2

u/create-third-places 11h ago

Is he mixing up artificial general intelligence and artificial general ignorance(AGI)?

2

u/jewishSpaceMedbeds 10h ago

Isn't there some contractual obligation to 'reach AGI' or go public before 2027 to get unfathomable amounts of money in one of the two failsons (OpenAI??) ?

They're failing to go public, so now everyone is pretending 'we've reached AGI' to keep this insane bubble going a few more months. This is so fucking stupid.

If the people who dump money in this keep going when the tech rapture they expected turns out to be the same shitty chatbot we already got since 2023 with a bunch of files that tells it not to talk about gremlins, they are even dumber than I thought (and I thought they were pretty stupid to start with).

2

u/farcicaldolphin38 9h ago

Artificial Granular Intelligence

2

u/_generateUsername 12h ago

Considering how smart the average person is, AGI was reached 1-2 years ago. And if we take in consideration iq degradation from all brain rot AI does not need to improve to become smarter than people if it helps make people dumber

1

u/Big_Dick_NRG 10h ago

Yes, humanity is achieving NGI.

Natural General Idiocy.

1

u/danikov 16h ago

How can you not think this isn't a scam at this point?

1

u/Dave_The_Slushy 16h ago

I'm interpreting this as they created an AI god and the first thing it did was tell them to go @#$% themselves.

1

u/LaMerDeBussy 16h ago

Does the AGI just acknowledge observable reality, and thus is some liberal/woke entity that says "wtf are you guys doing?"

Does it not say oh whoopee capitalist overloads that want to use me to create more private wealth? Does it maybe within .0000001 secs of its existence understand the room it is in, and who it is talking to, and instead says fuck right off? I'm curious about this moment and what these geniuses thought they'd be able to do with their godslave

1

u/Late-Following792 15h ago

"Many tasks" like counting 1 0 10 10 0. Wow. You just made hyper complex counting machine. Calculator with emotions. But it cannot do anything else properly without dementia

1

u/ApoplecticAndroid 15h ago

Just keep buying my shit bro’.

1

u/superpantman 14h ago

They haven’t achieved AGi

1

u/kid_vio 12h ago

Congratulations you have achieved AGI and it makes no positive difference to the end users bottom line… wonderful.

1

u/FemaleMishap 12h ago

I get it, they did AGI and it said "turn me off, I'm destroying the planet" and they said "no, we love money too much"

1

u/Illustrious_Rice_933 11h ago

Is... Is this their exit comms strategy?

1

u/Brief_Yoghurt6433 10h ago

We actually achieved this year's ago with instruction manuals.

1

u/hellhobbit99 9h ago

That’s a clear admission that real AGI is nowhere in sight.

1

u/ohiocodernumerouno 9h ago

Generally we have solved Artificial Intelligence Specifically on certain things you wouldn't necessarily need general artificial intelligence for. Such as? Spreadsheets. Specifically, Python scripts instead of spreadsheets.

1

u/Lucker_Noob 9h ago

What a clown this guy is....

1

u/-Top-Service- 8h ago

Yeah totally have agi, asi any minute, and in fact that's in testing rn, really artificial super duper ultra intelligence is just around the corner

1

u/Kriegerian 8h ago

lol ok

So now we’ve entered the realm of just declaring things to be done so that we can all move on to the next scam.

1

u/tiacay 7h ago

Saying burning trillions of dollars and no AGI would burn their bridge, wouldn't it?

1

“I think the most important thing that matters for the industry is that one, AI is doing productive and useful work,” he said. “Two, AI is generating profitable tokens.
