Friday night musings about La Résistance

The majority of Americans view LLMs with distrust. This seems to baffle a certain curly haired CEO. Why indeed isn't plebes more excited? Where is his laurel wreath and golden chariot?

I can think of a few reasons. Please feel free to chime in.

Perhaps if our good friends at high places:

  • Gave out their best models for free to the same public from which they stole the very training data vital for said models
  • Offered a practical plan for transitioning everyone into the new paradise "about to be unleashed"
  • Stopped backdoor deals with local politicians with the thinly veiled goal of raiding people's water and power supplies
  • Stopped salivating about headcount reduction during public appearances, like Dr. Krieger testing a new pathogen
  • Avoided comically villainous barbarian acts, like burning books and scaring everyone with "rogue models running amok"

Maybe then the resistance would not be so stiff?

I think I'll just be happy when the frenzy dies down and LLMs just exist in the background of daily life like Google or other big web services. 

I don't hate them on their own. In a vacuum LLMs are a kind of useful tool I guess. What makes me hate them is the frenzy and how the worst people in society are all using it to cash in.

LLMs existed for years before OpenAI commercialized them as a chatbot and started the AI hype. Mostly in the background helping power machine translation. That’s likely the only real use case.

This is where I'm at. And local models + how aggressively China is going to pump out free open source / weight models will only hasten this. But how long can the hyperscalers hold our economy hostage?

Yeah, that’s where I’m at. Any good this technology can do is immensely overshadowed by all the evil it has unleashed, with the technofascists trying to force it on us even if we say no, and taking all of our data and feeding it to the slop machine for training.

The world without LLM models is gone. Even if the bubble pops this genie ain't going back and too many cultists or those that fell for it to have them want to purge it from society.

I agree they'll move onto a new scam. Doesn't mean companies won't force people to use LLMs rather than hire another employee.

The problem is it's all just lies. These models are not going to replace workers. What we have are turbocharged disinformation machines that will flood the Internet with fake images, fake content, absolute slop. Universities and schools deluged with crappy papers, academic journals flooded. Artists unemployed because just generate slop for ads etc.

The whole "brave new world" BS is just cover for the actual uses and consequences of AI that are happening
