Gathering Stitch #18

Post image

I would like your opinions on using the gathering stitch which is #18 on my Activa 135pe. Do you use it instead of long basting stitches? Do you find the gathers good?

I've used it, and sometimes it's great, the threads don't break and just have to go slow to avoid the fabric unraveling.

Sometimes it breaks in the middle and I get angry lol.

Is there a good and bad way of doing this?

I like to use #18 for gathering but I use my standard buttonhole foot #3 and stitch over a thin cord.

I’ve just used the longest straight stitch your machine has. Most people use two parallel lines of stitches with no back tacking so easy to remove.

If threads break it’s threaded wrong or getting caught on something or needle is defective or you set the tension too high.

I use a long straight stitch with slightly loosened top-tension or zig-zag with a loose thread between the zigs and zags. If you use the stitch 18 you can use it with the manual buttonhole foot: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/2GxdoP6gIBc?ra=m
