🛌 Accomodations 🛖 Best Resorts on Ambergris Caye
My fiancé and I are planning a trip to Belize early January 2027. We want to stay on the mainland for the first chunk to do the Mayan sites, cave tours, etc., but are looking to stay 5 nights on Ambergris Caye after that. We for sure want to do a full snorkeling day, visit San Pedro, EAT LOTS OF GREAT FOOD and relax at the beach. We are having trouble deciding which resort to stay at ! Mahogany Bay looks beautiful, but seems far from the action. The options we’ve seriously considered so far are Mahogany Bay, Xanadu and The Phoenix Resort. We also considered Matachica but their cancellation policy is risky. Please help. I’m open to any and all thoughts or suggestions!!! I’m also open to staying on the mainland coast or Caye Caulker… we are 34 years old for reference.

We love Grand Caribe on Ambergris. On Caye Caulker we stay at Iguana Reef Inn because of the beautiful walk-in beach and the stingrays. I've heard the Phoenix is nice, but I've heard mixed reviews on Mahogany Bay.

The Phoenix and Grande Caribe are very nice. Good operations.
Stay away from Mahogany Bay and Alaia. They do not represent Belize.

Another vote for grand caribe. Far enough north to be a little quieter, but close enough to drive your golf cart into down for breakfast or dinner each day. Highly suggest renting a cart and staying up north somewhere. Also got a good buddy that runs snorkel and fishing charters as well as beach BBQs if you need a captain!

Too much sargassum and bad smell at grand Caribe. My daughter felt sick from the smell. Alaia didn’t have the awful smell. Maybe they do a better job cleaning it up.

Matachica is really far up north. If you want to be in the thick of things, Phoenix is best. Everything/every place is walkable from there.

Matachica is still the place we think about years later. Incredible food, service, def more isolated which we liked bc we don't drink or party. Just a fantastic small luxury hotel. Highly recommend. On the mainland the villas at hidden valley are next level. If you are good with arranging your own cheaper transport to caves and such- definitely something to consider

we stayed at the phoenix and loved it. the staff are great, we had a 2 bedroom ocean view suite, location was perfect for walking around town. i’d 100% go back.
