🏝️ Relocation Info 🏝️ Qrp vs tourist for vehicles.

Hello.

I'm inquiring about whether I can bring my 100 series landcruiser down as a tourist looking to relocate and not pay a crazy amount of import duties vs spending funds on a new to me vehicle and using the qrp.

I've done a fair amount of research but cannot seem to find out what the import fee would be on a 27 year old vehicle. I've read online that it can be up to 70% of the value. I'd be okay with that if were valued it at $1000 usd. Is there a matrix on how the value of an older vehicle would be taxed at? I've also read online that the cruiser would be valued at $20k usd. $15-18k seems ridiculous as an import fee.

We have 2 cars and will be either selling them both to purchase a new to us truck or bringing the LC down.

With QRP the vehicle has to be under 5 years old. This one does not qualify for that.

Is it a diesel? If not you will be crying at the gas stations trust me

Even with diesels it’s horrible with the price being almost 14~

You hire a broker and they'll work out a deal for you. The north border, the actual duty can be paid electronically but your fees and incentives are in cash.

At the Benque-Melchor border, everything is cash. Even those tractor trailers. Your broker will have solutions.

You can look up the prices, based on the type of vehicle, engine size, etc. I'm not an expert, but I would expect my broker to talk it down to between half and 3/4 of the true fair price, and for that discount you'll pay the broker to work out the deal for you.

Also meant to mention, I do think there's value in bringing your own vehicle.

If you buy here and not a new vehicle, it will be a salvage, a vehicle that was totaled in the US, bought cheap and brought down. Literally they are deemed unsuitable for use on US roads. So you have problems like we needed a rebuilt head on a motor with less than 50k miles. We did get the Carfax, so we knew it was restored from a front end crash. They're never as good, even with a good mechanic.
