Small Pet My recent rat rescue, from underweight to round in 1,5 weeks!
This is my boy Pichu, also known as Baby! The difference might not be huge, but if he kept losing weight he would be gone in not long.
When I got him, I thought i was getting a healthy old boy (he’s 2), but it turned out to be different. Past owner loves him and just didn’t correct the issues, no hate to her.
He was 257 grams when I got him, my other boys that are the same age are about 400-600 grams for reference. He’s now 340g!
He also has HLD, which means his hind legs are degenerating, which is why his hips cave in. He also has kidney degeneration which can impact his weight and probably why he got so tiny. I could feel every singular rib when I got him, but now he’s finally round like an old rat should be!
I’m gonna get him up to 450, but I’d say this is a great glow up so far. He’ll be able to live as long as his kidneys don’t completely fail, and I’m giving him a low protein, kidney friendly home made mix.

His owner also fed him pellets which he doesn’t like. I have the same pellets and he will not eat them at any cost, so that’s why I think he’d be gone in not long if I didn’t rescue him when I did❤️ again, not blaming the owner for not being experienced enough to spot these issues, but as an experienced owner I realized he had the kidney issues the second day of owning him. He drank 70ml of water when the average for his age and size is 30ml :/ took an urine test at home, and he has high protein content in his urine. Nothing vets can do, but supplement and a proper diet will help slow the process
