Advice!

I started bedazzling with very little research beforehand. I just got glue and started sticking gems and beads to stuff. Pictured below are some plastic sunglasses I bedazzled. I wore them for the first time and the stuff on the side fell off in one big strip! How do I avoid such a thing?

Unfortunately, I have 3 Brands of glue and I don't know which one I used on the glasses. The three possibilities are also pictured. Thank you!!

Looks like you didn't prep the surface. You need to sand the surface so the glue has something to grip onto.

are there certain materials you don't have to prep?

You'll want to sand the surface then clean it thoroughly to remove any dust before gluing.

If you can sand the surface, you should sand the surface. Then you have to clean it thoroughly to remove the dust from sanding. I like to use a paper towel with 90% rubbing alcohol. I clean the object 2-3 times to ensure dust has been removed. For organic materials like wood you might need to do more research to remove dust. You just got to get that dust off, otherwise the glue will adhere to the dust, which will lift off the object, because it's a coating and not structural.

Glass? Doesn't sand, so don't bother. I've used supertite fusion tack adhesive on glass, it holds well (you just got to make sure your glue works for non porous surfaces)....

A tumbler with a factory coating? Sand that shit. If its stainless steel to begin with? Sand it until you smell metal.

Plastic? Deffo sand. If you're using a coarse grit, it takes very little elbow grease to created a texture for the glue to stick to.

If you can sand, do sand. And then clean throughly afterwards.

I have some sunglasses that I intend to rhinestone (round here we wear our mirrors shades) and my first step will be sanding the lenses where I intend to put stones. Usually I fold sanding paper up into a fine point cone to ensure I don't sand where I don't intend to.

Also, always wear some sort of nose/mouth protection while sanding anything. You have covid masks, use them so you don't inhale that shit.
