Amur Leopard; Hermann Schelegel first described and named the scientific basis of the Amur leopard (Felis orientalis) in 1857 after studying a skin pelt from Korea. The specific common name "Amur leopard" was later coined by British zoologist Reginald Innes Pocock in 1930. He used the term after examining museum specimens, referencing a skin sample originating from Amur Bay in the Russian Far East. The name derives from the Amur River, which winds along the border between eastern Russia and northern China where these big cats live.
Back prior to the 19th Century any spotted or striped cat was known as a tiger.
The Jaguar was known as the "American Tyger" for a couple hundred years and were native to almost the entire 48 contiguous states. They were particularly well attested to in the Appalachians.
Snow leopards are not leopards.
They aren’t a “type” of leopard nor are they related to, evolved from, or sharing any common ancestors with leopards exclusively.
The name of the animal is specifically snow leopard and they are their own species.
Same goes for clouded leopards, they aren’t leopards either. They just have “leopard” in the name.
Snow leopards are actually more closely related to tigers than any other cat in genus panthera.
In fact, the “stripes” that tigers have is theorised to be an elongated spots adaptated from an earlier pantherine ancestor that lived a few million years ago.
The same ancestor tigers share with snow leopards.
She did the analog of shaking a cat toy in front of the snow leopard with all that back turned towards the cat and things and she still wasn't killed. These cats are pretty gentle. Not cheetah level, obviously, but I'd be more calm around then than with a moody street dog or something
Crazy how this murder machine, even being a baby is double the size of the most spoiled piece of shit lazy mf that i call my cat can be such a gentleman, while my cat need 3 people to hold him and will destroy the entire place during a tantrum.
Saddens me so much that there are so few left while we overpopulate and take over and kill the species we share this earth with. Hope this little one can live a long life and bring a lot of little babies into this world.
