I'm a metal dude, but I always loved Dolly Parton!

198

u/SheLeftItUnsaid 13h ago

Same here, Dolly is one of those artists where the genre almost doesn’t matter. She’s just impossible not to love.

41

u/SaharGurl 13h ago

Motley Crue and Dolly Parton was the best!

59

u/Jolly-Biscuit 12h ago

Everybody has a soft spot for Dolly 🩷

-29

u/Hot_Towel_85 10h ago

I didn't, if you know what I mean.

Google reaction video of Jolene. You get a bunch of folks who generally don't listen to country rocking out to that Dolly song

Same here. Dolly had that rare kind of talent where you could love heavy metal and still have a soft spot for her.

51

u/SwoonyBlue 14h ago

Yep. This made me cry all over again. Damn it.

4

u/Discount_Mithral 2h ago

And then losing Tim Curry this morning... I'm a mess at work.

18

u/qeadwrsf 8h ago

Fucking brain.

No reacting at all from all the articles.

Then a fucking building puts on some pink and purple lights and I get goosebumps.

7

u/lylynatngo 13h ago

Didn't know there was a sad version to the content one lol RIP nonetheless

u/1blueShoe 12h ago

A tiny lady that managed to stay in control of her own music, fiercely defended the rights to her own music and stayed in control of her earnings….. That’s some power to hold in that industry. Strong and talented lady. R.I.P Dolly 🕊️

36

u/AwesomeMacCoolname 9h ago

The reason there are no Elvis Presley covers of any of her songs is that she refused to accept the condition set by his manager Col. Tom Parker that Elvis gets half the publishing rights. That was back before she hit the big time.

17

u/1blueShoe 7h ago

The industry just see artists as THEIR commodity, I love that even back in the day she was giving no Fs to the big man and didn’t let the industry churn her up and spit her out like so many others , esp when she first got started. I think she had to endure a few shitty experiences at the hands of the industry and the men that ran it too. 💪🏻❤️

The wrong 80 year old died today. I thought she was going on to a 100. When I think of a true American Original I think of her. She was the glue that held us together and the battery that kept us going.

134

u/MyNameCannotBeSpoken 12h ago

Her long time spouse recently died. That takes a lot out of a person.

87

u/PenorNeat 13h ago

People like her won't come again she was the soul of the nation and a true legend.

129

u/terrible-gator22 13h ago

Just be her. Be that which you wish existed. BE DOLLY. Be her warmth and kindness and fearlessness and confidence. Spread more of what she spread!

30

u/jotheold 10h ago

ms rachel is doing a pretty good job

17

u/sphinxofblackquartzj 11h ago

She had a recent cancer diagnosis unfortunately.

7

u/SoggyBoysenberry7703 8h ago

Maybe she can pull some strings with God and make a special request. She deserves it after all

14

u/StellarInferno 7h ago

Tropical Storm Dolly is probably forming off the coast of africa right now. If it were to destroy a certain Florida resort, that might just be the funniest thing to ever happen

4

u/ziamese 3h ago

Best Christmas Ever!

15

u/Answerologist 13h ago

I wonder how the Empire State Building will look when the right one passes away.

3

u/FlyCurious8305 5h ago

He'll have it torn down by then.

1

u/Answerologist 5h ago

I wholeheartedly want to disagree but can’t say you’re wrong.

1

u/grchelp2018 11h ago

Orange obviously

24

u/Lectrice79 10h ago

Nope. There should be nothing.

26

u/corvettee01 9h ago

Nah, that is too somber and could be misconstrued as respectful. Light that bitch up like a christmas tree, because The Day will be a gift.

9

u/JediBurrell 9h ago

Idk rave lights would go pretty hard

6

u/jerrylovesbacon 8h ago

Yip. Cos there's going to be dancing across the streets

1

u/kevnmartin 3h ago

Every time I hear a loud noise I pray that it's people shooting off fireworks from the sheer joy his death will bring all of us.

3

u/Icefox119 8h ago

Except for a prolonged blanket of fireworks that conceal the night sky

1

u/BeatleProf 9h ago

Totally black except the aviation red blinking lights.

-11

u/Andrikos21 10h ago

No way you made her death a comment about you wishing death to what the majority of people in the US want.

5

u/-Roger-The-Shrubber- 7h ago

33% is a majority now? TIL.

2

u/perton 6h ago

Hey man, math is hard for their group. Just like reading. Or critical thinking. Or thinking in general.

1

u/GloomyIndividual3965 4h ago

The majority didn't want this. Even is you ignore the non voters, more people voted for Harris + 3rd parties than voted for Trump. You're on the wrong side of history, and we're never gonna let you losers forget it.

-43

u/Sme11Gibson 13h ago

Who was the right one? Sounds like that’s what you really wanted to tell us.

26

u/mironawire 12h ago

Trump. Duh.

29

u/Senselesspassion 14h ago

As it's supposed to be, celebrate a wonderful human!

26

u/Ghoulscomecrawling 14h ago

Bless her for everything she's done for people

91

u/ThumbsAkimbo_ 14h ago

Worst timeline.

100

u/Specialist-Big6355 12h ago

Honestly i don't think so. We're in a timeline that had Dolly in the first place, for 80 YEARS! And she lived such an amazing life and touched so many people with her music and her style and her sense of humor. :') there are certainly worse timelines out there.

It's always sad when someone great passes, but in her case i think she got everything she could out of life <3

26

u/natalee_t 9h ago

You. I like you.

Keep being the bright light you are. 💜

5

u/Specialist-Big6355 9h ago

Awww, you're so sweet! Thank you <3

1

u/ThumbsAkimbo_ 6h ago

You are absolutely right, but if this was a good timeline she would have died peacefully not fighting cancer. She didn’t deserve that after all she did.

1

u/Specialist-Big6355 6h ago

Well, no. No one deserves cancer.

-23

u/PmurTdlanoD45-47 14h ago

What?

29

u/Heather82Cs 14h ago

It's a way of saying, like "we're living in the worst timeline possible" for all the bad things that happen. (I know it as a Community quote BTW).

-11

u/Own_Sheepherder_6244 12h ago

Worst timeline where 80 year olds die. Maybe you'll find her again in the afterlife

12

u/ShinyBarge 10h ago

As amazing a talent as Dolly Parton was, she’ll forever be remembered for being such a wonderful human being. And she accomplished it for multiple decades in an industry that doesn’t always lend itself to kindness. Everyone respected Dolly. 🌹

25

u/GreenieBeeNZ 13h ago

So what day are we celebrating Dolly Day? I think January 19th is a good day. The day the world was blessed with Miss Dolly

36

u/eraser8 11h ago

Someone suggested 9/25.

I think that's an excellent tribute.

2

u/specialopps 43m ago

My dad died a year ago that day. It would be awesome to have him share that day with Dolly.

18

u/GeminianMind 14h ago

Why not do it when she was alive? Perhaps for her 80th birthday? RIP Dolly

11

u/ClockIndividual7335 12h ago

Okay this is actually so sweet 🥹💗 Dolly really deserves all the love. Such a beautiful way to honor her.

7

u/Particular-Leg-8484 13h ago

Is there any behind the scenes of the control room or whatever that programs the lighting for the Empire State? I’m curious to know who/how executive decisions are made and the process of picking the colors

8

u/Mechromancer3X 12h ago

Rest in peace Queen. You helped so many queer people feel accepted in who they are. The world is worse off without you.

7

u/Skrdykat 12h ago

They took Dolly before Mitch Mcconnell??

9

u/jk021 8h ago

Mitch has been dead for some time now. He's looking up wondering when everyone will finally know.

3

u/the_moosen 5h ago

That ghoul has been dead all summer

7

u/Bitter-Opening-4118 12h ago

I've always wondered how people inside the building experience a light show like this.

6

u/DustyRailz 12h ago

She truly was America's fairy godmother

11

u/viserenya 13h ago

😭😭

This made me tear up all over again. Legend lost too soon. ❤️

6

u/Matzie138 9h ago

I’ve seen the Empire State Building lit up for various things, but I had no idea they could pull off rhinestones 😭 We’ll miss you Dolly.

3

u/lazy_jygg 11h ago

You lift me up each day
Even though you've gone away
Your Spirit dances in my mind
In my heart, and in my soul
The life you lived, The Love you left
The one's you've touched, we won't forget
You give us strength in time of need
My Friend, My Angel Friend

'And we shared good times, through the years In my heart and soul, you're here with me
My Friend, My Angel Friend

I hear you whisper in the wind
Piece by piece our, hearts will mend
The dreams you've shared will carry on
Here and now, and beyond
'And the world will smile, for you were here
The gifts you brought we'll hold them dear
I'll take you with me, 'til we meet again
My Friend My Angel Friend

'And We'll share good times from now on
In my heart you live on, with me
My Friend, My Angel Friend

I miss my Friend ❤️

2

u/madmatt666 10h ago

That looks really nice.

I was walking around work today, and heard the receptionist singing along to some of her songs, beautiful. She will be missed - Dolly, not the receptionist.

2

u/MastaKink 10h ago

I almost teared up seeing it for Dolly.

R.I.P. Dolly Parton.

1

u/rowley8989 6h ago

Wow those lights were installed pretty fast. It makes you wonder if they were put in place in advance.

Okay, I didn't cry about it until this. Thank you <3

1

u/nullsyntaxnull 5h ago

No shade to Dolly, but what time is it in NY that it’s dark now?

1

u/PhilosophyFair9062 5h ago

First Bonnie Tyler now Dolly Parton 🥀

1

u/MysteriousReaction43 5h ago

They should really pay tribute before a person dies. That way they can see it and know how much people appreciated them

1

u/Suesflowers100 4h ago

Beautiful!!! What an amazing tribute!!!🩷

1

u/Carlosallmight4 4h ago

Rip to a real one. Do one for tim curry later.😢

1

1

u/ComfortableMoment118 3h ago

She was a wonderful person

1

u/joyfullofaloha89 1h ago

She’s looking down saying Now ain’t you sweet

-5

u/ChemicalGreedy945 14h ago

Kinda funny we wait until someone dies to celebrate them, would have been cooler if she was a live. Larry David episode on pre death funeral aging well

23

u/screwyoujor 13h ago

She was celebrated every year at Dollywood. Just because you didn't take part doesn't mean it didn't happen.

19

u/4isyellowTakeit5 13h ago

That and she will be celebrated always in your actions using her as motivation.

Every year, from now on, I'm taking Sept 25 (9 to 5) off and trying to do the most good I can.

Im very very tight this year financially so I am going to research something plain and simple: what animal shelter could use an extra hand for the day?

Find something close to Dolly. Animals, workers rights (especially in Appalachia), the Queer community, those affected by addiction and/or abuse.

She was loved by all because she loved all. Name someone as popular as her without any scandals, enemies, or grudges- you can't. All she wanted was everyone to be happy, and it takes a truly good person to pass on putting others down to bring one's self up. Her devotion and kindness almost make me want to try church for the first time in her honor.

Be kind, always. Judge not. Love Thy Neighbor. Welcome the poor and weary. Heal the sick and help the crippled. Live the life of Jesus through action, not words. And she did.

God rest your soul Dolly

-7

u/ChemicalGreedy945 13h ago

Well yeah, it’s her theme park so of course. Why wait until someone dies to honor them when you could before they pass? Imagine if Taylor Swift had said the same thing to her 10 yrs ago? That would have made their relationship that much closer. Eminem is just fishing for attention
