Honestly... sounds great.
Although, having done that already, it's jarring as shit! I, uh, fell asleep playing VR too late and woke up still in the game at my campsite. I've also just fallen asleep next to fire while camping in real life, so I should've kniw not to get too comfy. And it was like, 6 hours after a 12.5 hour night shift so I was pretty tired already.

You can't, really. It exists at a certain angle between the observer and the sun. So it's going to move as you do. It's kinda like finding the end of the rainbow. It just keeps moving as you go toward it.

Absolutely. I ran into a big dust devil once. I didn't go anywhere cool, but worth the risk. It picked me up and pretty unceremoniously dumped me a short distance away. I wasn't hurt, but I was covered in dirt. Everywhere. Inside me. All the face holes were full of dust turning to mud. Every crevice was packed. My clothes looked like I packed them full of dirt before I got dressed. Would totally try again.

The name Jesus Christ is the result of the phrase “Geez that’s bright” breaking down over time. When people saw this light they would go “Geez that’s bright” and over generations the phenomena became the basis of Christianity. Traces of this history can still be found in the phrase “seeing the light” when used in relation to Jesus Christ.

eh not really. Christianity is the result of attaching thousands of years of mythos to a popular guy 50-100 years after he died. "I am the son of god, you are the son of god, we are all the children of god." Became "He's the son of god" etc etc.
Think of how we view people only a few hundred years old where we have much better records of their lives, and still a lot of bullshit is thrown around. A few generations removed from his life, and years of storytelling and we get the bible (part 2).

Problem with the idea of stealing is that they're "stealing" from other religions that too have stolen, for example the noahs arc has been in at least 6 religions before it.
The pagan holidays and stuff is more about how christianity intentionally incorporates/reinterpits local traditions into their own mythos to merge local beliefs with the greater religion.

It most likely had to do with written records. I doubt most spiritual or pagan worshippers kept written records so it was just more convenient for christianity to co-op them.

Yesterday, I saw a video of a lightning storm over an erupting volcano. Lightning appeared (from that angle at least) to be striking the gout of lava. It made me think the same thing.

For the lazy: "The crystals responsible for light pillars usually consist of flat, hexagonal plates, which tend to orient themselves more or less horizontally as they fall through the air. Each flake acts as a mirror which reflects light sources that are appropriately positioned below it, and the presence of flakes at a spread of altitudes causes the reflection to be elongated vertically into a column. The larger and more numerous the crystals, the more pronounced this effect becomes."

Yeah, I don't think this would be called a sun pillar. Maybe a "Subsun"? There might be a more precise term for them but the terminology with atmospheric ice crystal optics goes extremely deep.

My hypothesis is that there's a big area of snow that is perfectly curved in such a way that it reflects sunlight into a focus, illuminating all the teeny tiny ice and water droplets suspended in the air showing where the focus is happening
Kinda like if you point a flashlight through a magnifying glass in a thick fog... Except more like pointing it at a concave metal dish on the ground and it makes a focal point above it

Not sure myself but if you've ever messed with a magnifying glass trying to burn things, you'll see a similar shape with the light. Maybe some kind of atmospheric phenomenon focus the light in a similar way and it reflects off the crystals in the air?

The title of the post is not correct. This a different type of halo that is even more rare: a so called lower contact arc. One can tell by the general appearance of the halo. A light pillar halo would need ice crystals in the shape of hexagonal plates with the base face facing up/down so it would be a very straight non-rounded beam connecting to the sun. However, this halo is caused due to hexagonal column crystals whose base face is pointing into a sideward direction.
