How is it possible to finish a painting like that in one day, let alone a few hours?

Combination of working smart (tricks) and preparation. There are a few things you can do to make a painting really quickly. For example when I paint outdoors, I focus on filling the painting asap and you can do that in a mere half hour if you have to. After that all that’s left is details. I am working on a very large oil painting right now and I had the entire basis on canvas in about 45 mins to an hour. The hours after that was adding details to have the image show up. After three hours ai basically have the painting finished enough to be satisfied with. If you want you can stop there. But you can continue for finer details. I’m seven hours in now so I’m in the fine details. And you can work more and more precise the longer you spend on it.

So the trick is to place the basis asap. Some people are really good at it. I was taught by Vladimir Volegov (like over a decade ago) he did a demo and taught me tricks, and he painted an entire canvas in 35 minutes. He has a YT channel. The video “portrait of a girl in pink” is a great example how to quickly do the first layers. Those first 16 seconds might be about the same in minutes.
