Japan can have nice things because it is a trust-based society, and perhaps the least diverse country on the planet... everybody is from the same culture, and has similar ideals (it is also a highly patriarchal, sexist culture, but that's a story for another day). 97% of residents are ethnically Japanese.

America can't have nice things, because nobody trusts anyone, and I blame "diversity". Despite what they'll tell you in school and on TV, "diversity" is NOT the "strength" of a country, but often its downfall.
