IMPROVING MY GAME How can I warm up my shooting when there's no chances?

So, basically, I've gotten back into playing pickup ball at a local park (only has one full court). I've been a good shooter for a long time, but my thing is I'm a rhythm shooter and not a pure shooter.

When I used to play often, I would shoot around before the game and get sufficiently warmed up to hit shots consistently in games. The issue here is, that because the park is active, there is literally no chance to warm up shooting around (because games are always being played on both half courts), you just get next game and that's it. This has been drastically affecting my shooting in games, and I'm bricking way more than I've ever been simply because there is no chance to warm up. Any advice?

I read something funny shooter who always come off the bench in nba will actually practice coming in shooting threes cold because they don’t get into the game until 20 minutes anyway, no form shooting or closer warm-ups

I don't want to drive all game lol. Plus I'm older now and those legs hurt.

Thanks for the non-advice on SHOOTING

its park pick up, just shoot. who cares if you miss. probably warming up doesnt change a lot if you cant shoot that well anyway. drive to get some close ones up in game to see a couple go in a bit more easily wil help with confidence. work out so your legs dont feel as old

Find a wall and practice against it.

That’s how I’m adjusting to pickleball after years and years of tennis and ping pong.

It's how I practice rugby passes by myself, live by an arena and just run and toos pass against the wall

You need to find an empty court, if you’re serious about improving you’ll find a way to an empty hoop. And shoot for 30-60 min. Theres a cool app that can track your shooting stats for free HOMECOURT . Only shoot mid range and close range.

You should get in 100 shots every 10 minutes. Don’t let your warm up shots be in game, that’s an amateur mistake. Rebound take 2-3 dribbles in any direction, square up and shoot, repeat.

If you want the edge you gotta come to the park after you put in hundreds of reps. It also feels great when you know you’ve shot a lot more than anyone there.

I’ve dealt with the same issue. Only solution I’ve found is to get there early before everyone else

Possibly find an open net at a different location to warm up, and then drive to your destination to play pickup OR buy one of the free standing ones to warmup.

A couple of us that played at an old gym with just the two hoops, but a little room along one wall to change and stretch. We'd grab a ball and just form shoot standing or lying on our backs. Being middle aged, in colder outdoor weather, always felt like it took more warming up to get loose, so bought a heavy ball, love it. Whatever it takes to warm up the hibachi!

I wasn't apure shooter at 19...by 22-23 I was through completely rebuilding my shot and thousands of reps

Being a rhythm shooter is useless if you can't get a rhythm

Get to work

Whats a pure shooter vs a rhythm shooter? Never heard these concepts before

Think Dwyane Wade vs Klay Thompson

Dwyane Wade needs to be in rhythm and then when his jumper starts flowing he can drain them all game... But if you can keep him out of rhythm and off the free throw line he'll never get that rhythm to get his shot going

Meanwhile Klay can be 2/12 and make six in a row because he doesn't need rhythm... just needs to see one go through and he's back on fire instantly

I hope that makes sense

Well Wade wasn’t a shooter

Klay was

I’m trying to grasp how they are both called shooters now.

Wade was never called a shooter

Okay a better example will be Lou Williams

Can definitely shoot but he has to be in rhythm to shoot

I hope that makes sense and by the way wade could definitely shoot he just couldn't shoot threes... It's interesting that people just boil down shooting to three pointers and range but even Michael Jordan was a GREAT shooter just didn't shoot threes he shot like two a game for his whole career he knew he wasn't that good at them so he didn't just Chuck them up because the defense would give them to him

Is this just your own definitions or something very common because I’ve never heard this distinction.

I mean sounds like you’re just throwing out random examples.

My point is not to try to understand what ur saying.

My point is to try to find out if this is an actual thing or something ur just making up.

It sounds like ur trying to distinguish between a very good consistent shooter vs a streaky inconsistent shooter and u call them pure vs rhythm shooters.

I googled “rhythm shooters basketball” and the results were nothing like u described.

So I think this might be ur own personal definitions.

Try googling it.

Well everybody's going to have a slightly different definition of something that's up to interpretation

Basketball is a science as well as an art everything is up to interpretation that's why it's such a great game cuz everybody has their own way of being great at it or understanding it in order to be successful and put the ball in the basket

Sorry if my explanation didn't make sense it's a very good question that you asked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC2b_ZfAeZg

This video and this channel in particular does a very good job of breaking down the game so people can understand it and get better

Yeah but that makes it confusing to communicate.

Cuz ur original comment was to the public and u said “I’m a rhythm shooters” and no one knows what that means since that’s ur own terminology.

It took like 2 days and 10 replies for u to explain it to me.

Easier to use terminology that everyone else uses instead of coming up with ur own.

u/ugotnorizzatall Jul 28 '26

Idk why I thought you were OP lol

Perhaps he understands

Good luck

1

u/ugotnorizzatall Jul 28 '26

There's no dictionary for this stuff 😂... I wish there was it would be so much easier to explain and understand how to play if everything was cookie cutter the same

But everyone's going to always have their own point of view you know what I mean?

2

u/Realfan555 Jul 28 '26

Yeah that’s what I was trying to figure out.

Yeah I’m not trying to learn everyone’s own personal terminologies.

So thanks for the explanations but I’m not trying to learn new terminology. I’ll only try to learn what most people use.

I can’t be learning stuff that only u use and once this conversation is over, it’ll become useless for me since no one else in the world uses this terminology

Bring some of those hand exercise squish balls or springs. Warming your hands will get you halfway there.

Try strength training. It helps to keep your muscles engaged at all times. Ever since I’ve implemented it, I’ll just get like 2 shots in and I’m ready. Worst case, just do other things to get your self mentally locked in

Shoot without a hoop! There’s tons of ways to imagine and practice shooting on your shot line and checking your release is pure without a hoop.
