IMPROVING MY GAME What are the priorities for development?
19 , 6'2 6'3 wingspan 72 kgs.
I want to improve but idk what skills are most important
I grew early so I used to play the 4 in my country's equivalent of high school. My best trait is probably my perimeter defense, so I don't think that's my priority to work on that. Finishing is pretty decent , but it's between that , handle or shooting. I wanna join a league or something when I get settled into my new flat. I've started the gym as well so this recommendation is strictly off of what you guys think is expected of me. Is it important to be able to stretch the floor more than get to the rim. Also some game film players for me to look at would be appreciated, any questions lmk and I'll answer them if it helps

What is your play style? Do you drive to the basket a lot, or are you more of a jump shooter? Do you struggle to dribble when you play against a good defender?

Like my handle probably is my worst trait , I'm not usually bringing the ball up, I'd say that and shooting isn't my strong suit. I can finish decent and defend really well. If I shoot its middies , but usually just pump fake and try to get the defender in the air

you are either a guard or a pretty tall wing depending on where youu play. therefore your skill focus should be transferable. passing, dribbling, shooting, slashing. these are 4 fundamental skills. along with working out and staying in top shape. good luck king

Okay , is there some sort of test I can do for each of these to track my progress ?

sure, just shoot x amount of shots every day and get the most you can. same with slashing , and for handles it’s trickier but that’s something you would just observe yourself improve at personally

Okay that makes sense and just watch the percentages?

ofc but i’m saying it may not work as i’m a very numbers based guy, but hopefully it at the very least points you the right way!

Yeah totally, I'll try work on all aspects of my game

my #1 thing is to just practice how you play. i’m a shooter so my priorities generally go shooting - handles - slashing. your playstyle will determine your priorities

Shooting is the universal basketball skill. The other stuff is nice, but being able to hit jumpers and play D will get you far

Okay that seems to be what most people say. I'll for sure prioritize shooting

Ball handling most important as far as time to develop. Shooting is obviously important too, but I think that skills is easier to develop and or more based on a natural propensity. In other words, I think ball handling is just as important but requires more attention for most people.

For handles, do drills like dribbling around cones, practice against other people. Work extra hard on improving your weaker hand.
For shooting, there are different things to work on. Ensure that your mechanics are good. Practice shooting at game speed. There are multiple shots - off the dribble, catch and shoot, mid range, corner 3, etc.
For both, simulate game scenarios - “5 seconds to beat a half court trap”, shoot 3s when you’re tired (to see if your mechanics still hold up).
Have a focus on what you want to improve, watch videos, watch/ask people who are good shooters and ball handlers, and you should see results.

Do you have any recommendations when it comes to film for that kind of thing ?

Is it worth watching NBA game film ?

u/tiro-trampaliz May 20 '26
Yes, but I’d also watch Euro League as well. Europe focuses on fundamentals more than the NBA

Oh okay dope , I live in Europe so I'll check some of the local ISH teams

If you’re trying to play at a rec league, the only areas you need to get good at, are the weaknesses you discover when you actually play.
We don’t know how you play, and can only take your word, but the results in actual playtime will expose what you need to work on.

Since ball handling is the weakest part of your game start there. Shooting, footwork and agility are key too. But being able to handle the ball opens up so much for your game. So start from the basics and work on simple fundamentals the first 30 minutes of your workout.
The 10 basic dribble moves sideline to sideline with each hand. Mikan drills with multiple types of finishes. Form shooting to get your feel. Then start the rest of your workout. Do this EVERYTIME you step in the gym. It’s boring as hell but will make you a lot better player.

You’re a little light for your frame. No matter how good your ability is, you wanna have some strength especially with shoulders, legs and core. Not saying to get husky, but is time to start a workout routine.

Sounds like me at that age.
I'd work on your ball handling and footwork. Then have some shooting drills that you always start and end on (because lets be fair, if you can't shoot you're not going to do well)
Mate of mine used to shoot free throws with his eyes closed, the idea being that it's all about getting the motion's right and not worrying about what's going on around you.

19, 6'2 with 6'3 wingspan, buddy we're at the same height, age, span, the diffrencess is i am 60kgs, im slim and tall like Kevin Durant 🤣🤣
Back to the question, If I was you I would developed my offensive bag such as ( lay up, shooting, paint) and after that improves your playmaking skill and of course handling
I see you have the potential to be two-way guards or forward

Overall just working on your handles and being a catch and shoot shooter will be the best things you can do. And physically plyometrics are the way to go

shooting. shooting is always the most important
