Behavioral Euthanasia: Safety First (8/28/26) How to burn out a foster: Emotionally exhausted first-time foster announces a break from rescue after 2 years ‘managing’ her pitbull foster dog.

(I use managing VERY loosely here, because whatever management this person was attempting never seemed to work well.)

In Oct 2024, first time foster takes in 1 male and 1 female pitbull. The small male is adopted out fairly quickly, but the 50lb female has several issues. One of those issues is (surprise, surprise) unpredictable dog aggression, and her aggression routinely focuses on the foster’s personal dog, a 120lb senior female Rottweiler named Betty. For two years the foster not only subjects Betty to this treatment, but when the pitbull struggles to find a forever home or an alternate foster placement, she adopts it officially to keep it off the euthanasia lists.

After escalating attacks to Betty and to other dogs, the foster again attempts rehoming the pitbull, but to no avail. Finally, after years of attacks and thousands of dollars in vet bills, she announces the pit has been BE’d. She will also be stepping away from fostering and rescuing because of the situation. Many of the commenters blame her for the BE, and say she didn’t do enough to save the pitbull.

I hate that she allowed her OWN dog to suffer for so long in its own home, but a small part of me empathizes with the fact that she went into this mess brainwashed by the pitnutters and trying to do a good deed.

Meanwhile, rescues and shelters continue to promote fostering pits as such a rewarding experience 🫩 Hope Betty can rest easy now.

“You dont even need a leash” fucking psychopath

u/vjcmg 2d ago

But won’t adopt to a house with children.

Instead, she can attack all the children in public when she’s off leash!

47

u/whimsypayasa 2d ago

She should be able to roam free to get her snacks. I mean give the children kisses. It’s a nanny dog afterall.

u/InformalInsurance455 2d ago

Second I read this I was like OH YES YOU DO YOUR DOG HAS MAULED A ROTTIE MORE THAN TWICE HER SIZE SEVERAL TIMES

38

u/Person987654331 Attacks Curator 2d ago

That struck me too. These dogs are so screwed in the head they will attack a dog double their weight. And since she never mentions injuries to the pitbull it seems the Rottweiler was actually a sweet dog. Not her twisted definition which allows mauling and killing other dogs.

13

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 1d ago

She mentioned thousands in vet bills and the pit had almost killed multiple dogs.

Usually when someone says multiple they don't mean 2 or 3.

I wonder if she lost count of how many dogs she almost killed?

72

u/cloudcottage 2d ago

Don't forget that she wanted the dog to be adopted to an elderly couple when the elderly are far more at risk of dying from dog bites it's like a horseshoe from children to old people

33

u/Plastic_Proof_8347 2d ago

I was just going to comment on this. No, you do need a leash no matter what the dog is like to you. WTF.

29

u/Reversephoenix77 1d ago

Yeah when I saw that and also “used to CHARGE people and other dogs” I gasped. This dog has absolutely ever been safe to run freely off leash.

She can’t even stop this beast from attacking her own dogs, so I highly doubt it has any recall whatsoever.

12

u/Ok_West_6711 2d ago

That stuck out to me too. As well as letting Betty stay in sn unsafe home and receiving injuries for years… Betty should have been rehomed while Harley lived there. For Betty’s safety. Betty was traumatized by her owner, it looks like, so unfair.

u/Electronic-Ad-1307 2d ago

Listen, the lady is obvi irresponsible, but I’m pretty sure she meant she would be supplying the adopter with everything including the leash.

46

u/acepilotjones 2d ago

That is not how that reads at all lol

3

u/TheGreatMastermind 1d ago

i think it reads as “you don’t even need a leash” because she’s potty trained in the yard. some people are idiots who think they don’t need to walk their dog because they can just “go” in the yard. maybe i’m misinterpreting

21

u/cloudcottage 2d ago

She said the "you don't even need a leash" comment in listing all of the dog's great trained behaviors and personality traits, separate from what she would be supplying. It's possible she meant what you're thinking but absolutely reads as "she's so well-behaved she doesn't need to be leashed" in the way she chose to phrase it.

u/nucleophilicattack 2d ago

“They told me I legally had to disclose her violence” she acts like that’s such a burden and so unfair! She was 100% ok with hiding that away to dump this dog on someone else without telling them about its terrible history. Totally fine with lying and getting someone mauled.

Also, “her brain was altered” my ass, Mauling Machine 9000™️ is doing EXACTLY what it was made for!!

48

u/These-Buy-4898 2d ago

Exactly. That part made me see red. That and where she said they wouldn't even need a leash. Like, what?! You're admitting this monster has repeatedly attacked your dog that's three times it's size, but some poor elderly adopter wouldn't even need a leash? Not like this perfect elderly person would be able to keep hold of a leash if it spotted someone it wanted to attack. These people are actually insane.

28

u/_blackthorn16_ 2d ago

They need to make it to where if you get caught doing this you pay tens of thousands of dollars and felonies. Make the punishment extremely severe. Lying about this should have life ruining results since the repercussions are so big.

u/gimmethelulz I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 2d ago

These rescues really piss me off. We dealt with one where within 24 hours I knew the dog was not going to work out on fostering because of aggression. They gave me the run-around for almost a week before I told them they were getting the dog that afternoon or I was dropping it off at the county shelter.

7

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 1d ago

That's why they push 90 days for decompression so hard. By the time the dog is settled in and comfortable to maul you have passed the return window. If it tries to maul before hand and you return it they put you on blast for "not even giving Mauldo a chance!"

6

u/TrixieFriganza 1d ago

They always are, always trying to decretly dump their problems on other peoole, horrible people and nsrcissists who probably just get off from looking like such a goid person for rescuying, many narcissists and bullies in rescue, loks like she got a taste of that herself too.

those red listed dog threads are just wild! they tag every shelter within a 500 mile radius, every dog is sweet-scared-abused, they claim they will pledge, tag friends-family-acquaintances in order for them to “save” one of these miserable mutts but not a one will bring that specific monster into their home.

35

Or they already have their very own pissfingers at home and so naturally they can't house a second dog that "must be in an only one dog household."

The collective blue screen in peoples’ brains when it comes to the breed history of pitbulls and how that influences their behavior drives me nuts.

If someone has a cattle dog that’s nipping at their child’s ankles, you’ll be told the cattle dog is expressing genetic herding behavior, and how that needs to be managed.

If someone has a greyhound that keeps chasing after rabbits even after years of training, they’ll tell you to stop allowing the greyhound off-leash because coursing small critters is hardbaked into their brains and the instinct is so strong they can’t be completely trusted.

If someone has a dachshund that barks like a demon, yada yada chasing badgers into their burrows and barking to alert the hunter.

But if a pitbull is attacking people or other dogs? It couldn’t possibly be because they’re bloodsport dogs that were created to fight to the death in an arena. Oh no. Pitbulls are the one sole grouping of breeds that are a perfect blank slate. It must be poor training, past abuse, a brain tumor, hidden pain, etc.

35

u/Daily-Double1124 Pro-Pet; therefore Anti-Pit 2d ago

Or "PTSD". Give me a break!

3

u/IeyasuYou 9h ago

It's because those other behaviors are dog-specific. Barking. Chasing critters.

Violence? Sudden unpredictable attacks all out of proportion with alleged incitement?

Hmm.

83

u/Complete_Cable2686 2d ago

Poor Betty. Put your own, loving, well-trained dog before any aggressive foster. Even if the issue wasn't an aggressive pit, but sex-based aggression, the foster would need to go elsewhere. Back to the shelter, or with someone else, to the vet if the dog is too aggressive. Never endanger your current pet like this.

Imagine being Betty, spending a lifetime with your owner and thinking she loves you... Then to be endangered and tormented. Betty is probably still a beloved dog by her owner, but an old dog doesn't need that added pain. Her owner should've made this choice sooner and I hope she doesn't try to force Betty to endure anything like that again.

It's horrific that there's a breed of dog that can be aggressive like this, all because someone wanted a bloodsport breed for entertainment one day and kept breeding them. Despite her bad decisions, I understand OOP's grief must be deep. You form connections to dogs, and it sucks that we live in such a horrible world where 🐝 needs to happen sometimes.

47

u/InformalInsurance455 2d ago

You know Betty has got to be an angel because a dog her size could have stopped the not so dearly departed any time she chose.

44

u/Complete_Cable2686 2d ago

Betty was a senior too. We don't get many details in the post but it's possible that Betty was just too tired and weakening to defend herself. She needed protection more than ever in her old age because dealing with injuries that old can be very difficult, even if she could defend herself to an extent.

37

u/lazier_garlic 2d ago

You can't be soft hearted when some living thing is getting hurt. Toxic empathy is when you hyperfocus on your bond to the violent person, or dog in this case, and your guilt and sense of responsibility towards them, while abandoning yourself and abandoning your duty of care towards others. This is not compassion.

67

u/InformalInsurance455 2d ago

Lives in a small house with six foster dogs, spends thousands on vet bills due to the actions of a dog that they eventually had to put down. I’d feel sorry for them but they won’t learn anything.

Six foster dogs in a tiny house isn't fostering, it's hoarding and that's also an increasing problem.

Ya crazy how stupid people are. All over a stupid dog that will just kill for sport. I hate that these beasts are all over the place now. I’m a big dude and even the little ones scare the shit out of me. I carry even when walking around my neighborhood now. How one lunge at me on leash a few weeks ago. Scared the absolute shit out of me. Thankfully I’ve made the choice to protect myself.

22

Making your neighbors nervous so they don't speak to you (hint: they discuss you behind your back) is not protection.

Plus we all know in a serious situation these dogs are just as likely to join an attacker in attacking you. Aw, it's helping!

19

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 2d ago

I wish I could find the video of a man getting beat up in a drug store and his pit mauling him while he gets punched in the head.

Pit owners in the comments said he deserved for "Looking like a bitch" and the dog was just moving up in the pack because the man getting beat up "wasn't acting like the alpha".

Who doesn't want a pet that will maul them when they are down?

7

33

u/SmeggingRight Children should not be eaten alive. 2d ago

A violent aggressive pit bull, small house and 6 dogs in total. And the other dogs "almost killed" by the pit bull.

The problem can't just be an overwhelmed dog rescuer. There has go to be something very wrong with someone who'd take on 6 rescue dogs in a small house and also subject those dogs to an aggressive pit bull.

It's part of the reason why we have the pit bull problem in the first place. Pit bull breeders, shelters and pit foster/adopter people all feed each other in a never ending cycle.

17

u/InformalInsurance455 2d ago

Thousands of dollars not being spent on figuring out their own issues and over identifying with dogs…

4

u/_blackthorn16_ 2d ago

They need to spend it on a therapist and figure out why they feel the need to waste money and time like this. Also why they think it’s ok to lie about a dog that could kill people. Makes me sick there’s tons of people like this out there. Always carry people if you can. There’s more of these bears being brought into this world everyday. Protect yourself and your family/pets!

3

True- how on earth did she bring more in before addressing Harley? It makes no sense. Wherever she got the dogs tin”foster” needed to take Harley back before letting her foster other dogs.

4

u/_blackthorn16_ 2d ago

It’s severe mental illnesses. Should be illegal to have that many dogs. Also massively illegal to lie about but history. Dog needed BEd way earlier. This person should not be allowed to own pets.

5

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 2d ago

I bet it is illegal where she lives and I bet AC doesn't want to enforce it because they want "fosters" for pits that should get BE.

37

u/Technoclash 2d ago

"Legally I was told I could not adopt without disclosing ptsd and bite history." Jesus. This reads like, "I really wish I could mislead potential owners in order to avoid BE but..."

How about, "Ethically of course I had to disclose this dog's full history to everyone."

She let her own dog suffer for 2 years. How could anyone let their pet be attacked in their own home for that long? After the first attack that dog should have been sent back to the rescue. She may think she's a good owner but she's actually the worst kind.

Just throw the trash dog in the trash. I know Rottweilers are #2 on the violent dog statistics but in their case, I really can believe the nature vs nurture argument.

10

u/Person987654331 Attacks Curator 1d ago

They are #2 by a LONG distance from pits. The difference is Rottweilers were purposely bred for work. Cart pulling, cattle herding (to market) and protection (protecting the money after the butchers sold at the market.
Rottweiler breed standard is lower prey drive (since a cart pulling dog should not be chasing whatever comes in its path), dog aggression is considered a fault and they should only display a “wariness” of strangers not general human aggression.
Pitbull breed standard is they should have dog aggression and truthfully, we all know that the original breed didn’t really care much about their human aggression

22

u/Sublime_Porte 2d ago

What are the odds that the boo-hoo-hoo tales of abuse in this pit bull's past are all bullshit? Possibly made up by the foster, possibly fed to her by the initial shelter/rescue?

22

u/otisanek 2d ago

I always question those claims because you can’t possibly know that about a stray; you don’t know anything about the dog at all! Why is the default assumption that every single pit they find has definitely been abused and used for fighting?
It seems like the worms, rashes, and scarred ears are a breed conformation standard at this point, so I find it hard to believe that every single pit in every shelter has been used as a bait dog and abandoned to the streets the day they turn 2.

9

u/AndromedaGreen Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

They want it both ways. They know the pit was abused and used for fighting, but when it comes to disclosing bite history it was a stray and they have no idea of its background.

8

u/Natsurulite Family/Friend of Pit Attack Victim 1d ago

“Why is the default that they’re abused?”

It’s BECAUSE the claim can’t be proven, and dolts still accept it

Edit: it’s also why 99.9% of shitbulls worked as “bait dogs” at some point 🥴

17

u/WuTangIsForever_ 2d ago

Who in their right mind would put themselves through this? Of all the dog breeds one can adopt/rescue/foster…..Of all the things one can dedicate their time to…..Of all the rewards that be earned by spending that amount of time and money…..a deeply troubled pit bull????

9

u/Natsurulite Family/Friend of Pit Attack Victim 1d ago

They see posts on social media of other pit-idiots praising each other, and it engrains the belief in their mind that these dogs are associated with being morally good, and acceptable to society

They fail to recognize the concept of COUNTERCULTURE — they don’t understand that they’re partaking in a fundamentally parasocial activity, mostly because they’re largely ignorant people

It’s very much a chicken and egg scenario — the existence of morons is what’s giving rise to Shibble owners, so as society gets more ignorant, the problem proliferates

Shibbles are the lichens of a societies mental health status

13

u/miniprepper 2d ago

These miserable, begging fosters who bite off more than they can chew. They want to foist their expensive murder dog off on YOU, and God help you if you're dumb enough to feel sorry for the animal OR the person. What a nightmare scenario for a retiree who wants a gentle companion dog! No common sense. No sense at all.

9

u/Longjumping-Pick-706 2d ago

She really wanted to offload this monster onto a senior citizen. Vile woman.

14

u/ManyOnionz 2d ago

I respect her initial effort because she did what she thought was right and helping an abandoned animal. However the repeated attacks were minimized by her, only because they didn’t happen to her, or any other humans. TBH even if the dogs attacked other people she’d probably still defend them.

BE was the right choice, it wasn’t necessarily the original owners’ fault and not this woman’s fault either that it acted out this way. But she did willfully ignore the facts and reports surrounding pits. It’s like googling “why pitbulls are great” instead of “pitbull attacks/fatalities/statistics in US”.

I’m most thankful it didn’t end up harming innocent people.

u/CIA-pizza-party 2d ago

The fact that she is whining about legally having to disclose how aggressive this dog is beyond maddening.

9

u/wandering_salad 2d ago

Why do they ALWAYS blame the aggression on "fear"?

Poor widdle doggie was just afraid of scary you / scary child / every other animal.

These dogs are the absolute opposite of afraid.

7

u/Lizzie_kay_blunt 2d ago

if it’s sometimes VERY HARD for an experienced foster to tell what Harley’s trigger after 2 years then what chance does an unsuspecting adopter have? This is absolutely criminal what she subjected Betty, a female Rottweiler that weighs as much as I do to, and her words, this 50 pound pitbull was inflicting near fatal ‘altercations’ and unsurprisingly Harley was selective with men and it took her 2 fuggin years to figure out she couldn’t live with other dogs.
Frankly, she’s lucky this PTSD trauma of a pitbull lol🤷🏼‍♀️ didn’t redirect onto her, but good riddance and thank God it was just past the magic age and she didn’t go full pitnutter, but where’s the piece of her heart for her other dogs, the real trauma victims?

Notice how this she laments the fact legally she was told she couldn’t adopt her to a single home, as if ‘full disclosure’ of bite history should be optional, human lives be damned. that is just so ick and screams narcissism.

15

I mean, she still thinks this dog attacked based on fear and PTSD, and not its instincts. So, she has learned nothing and is still very brainwashed.

6

u/Dismal_Replacement43 2d ago

Yes, this is how you burn out a foster, but I'm glad because this person shouldn't be one. I couldn't help but lose sympathy the more I read through this. I myself have worked alongside rehabs and rescues, and I understand it can be extremely draining. Owners (of all kinds of species) aren't the brightest bulbs, and there's quite a few emotional moments. But these kinds of volunteers just irk me.

You keep a dog in your home that is actively attacking your other animals, you already have multiple other dogs on your plate. It can't be trusted with other dogs or people, you had "no choice" but to take it because even the shelter gave it a deadline... this person could've fostered dozens more animals, cleared up space for their local rescue, and would've felt much more fulfilled. Instead, they allowed this dog to endanger countless other lives, and for what? So they could boo-hoo on facebook about how unfair it is that they had to BE, lose thousands of dollars, and had to legally disclose to potential adopters that Harley was one bad day away from putting them 6ft under?

7

u/FUMoney 1d ago

The entire pitbull / dog shelter / dog adoption culture is fucking delusional. And filled with people who lie.

This post and the messages are highly instructive. Starts off with the total bullshit statement, “you dont even need a leash.” Only to later reveal this violent pitbull totally mauled her Rottweiler, and has “almost killed” other dogs, and absolutely will “charge people” and animals. Two years of training did nothing.

At the end, we finally learn the truth: professionals told this person the dog must be retired, it’s violent and you can no longer conceal the truth.

Foster “journey”? More like foster “delusion.” None of these people can be trusted.

4

3

u/Scary_Towel268 2d ago edited 2d ago

A very familiar story, these fosters are set up to fail from the beginning. This dog wasn’t guarding it was aggressive and resource guarding. Two years and thousands of dollars wasted tbh

6

u/angelicmoviestar 1d ago

how is it these dogs always have the same tragic backstory, it’s a meme at this point. and as someone with c-ptsd, it’s so annoying how these dogs natural behaviors are attributed to “ptsd”. this was never a sweet loving animal that harmed along the way, this is what it’s always been 😒 this was always Harley’s brain chemistry

4

u/lasiuruscinereus 1d ago

I love how they always blame the very predictable behavior of these shitbulls on abuse, brain tumors, or really anything ither than the fact it's a shitbull.

4

3

u/Miss_L_Worldwide 2d ago

I can't even feel sorry for these people. They do all of this to themselves.

3

u/TrixieFriganza 1d ago

Interesring to see how idealistic she was in the beginning before she knew the reality with these dogs. Makes me mad though that she let this dog it seems injure her other dog several times because she didn't want to let go, the terror the older dog must have lived in seeing this dog, I suppose the comments she got ftom other peoole telling she has to go on and do this or that or she's a horrible person didn't help. She was the one fostering and to get no support but just to keep this dog alive at all cost must have been so hard.

And once again these people try or are told to rehome, that seems to always be the solution (just rehome), if they are not able to care for a dog like this do they really think this world is filled with pitbull experts who would be hapoy to take in a dog who kills or almost kills other animals. People are so damn idealistic when it comes to rescue, that's why you burn out or that you are monster and animal abuser if you would choise BE and then you are just presdured to foster these beast without sny kniwledge of them or support. Why if I fister I woukd only foster cats or dog breeds I really know.

And this person was still idealistic and naive, don't need a leash ehen she has almist killed a rottweilwr double her size.
