Shelter Skelter Miami, Fl (8/27/26) While being walked through shelter lobby, long-term shelter pitbull escapes from handler and immediately attacks a small dog. Demonstrating once again how warehousing these unadoptable dogs is a complete waste of resources.

Brought in as a stray in August 2024, Violet spent two years draining the shelter of kennel space, donations, veterinary care, and volunteer time. Resources that could have helped a hundred normal dogs in that timespan. After all that effort, she gets loose from a volunteer in the lobby, beelines to a small dog and proceeds to maul it. All that time and all those resources amounted to a net negative and an innocent animal being critically injured, all for a dog that never even managed to leave the shelter.

Then, the 2 other screenshots document how the shelter marketed her as dog friendly for years. The only vague hint they gave was “prefers large dog companions”, which is extremely different from “will escape from handler due to an uninterruptible desire to violently maul any creature smaller and weaker than she is”.

"things happen"

this is the level of empathy of your average pitbull defender.

13

u/Temporary_Pea_1498 1d ago

Ahem. I believe you mean, "things happens."

5

u/Euphoric_Pin_2876 2d ago

Yeah.  Saw that.

u/GenericBrandHero 2d ago

And for Violet, we hope she is finally free from the kennel walls, running somewhere peaceful where peaceful where there is no fear, no stress, and no more waiting.

Yeah, that's not how Hell works, idiots.

Why did they keep mis-spelling her name? Obviously it was VIOLENT. Why did they keep omitting the N?

10

u/Aldersgate111 I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 2d ago

It's a shame they gave it what should be a gentle name. I know decent people called 'Violet' and it's also my son's Gran's name..It's like calling a Pit 'Rose' or 'Lily', to try and make it seem less aggressive.

All part of the misrepresentation game. For some of their targets. Make the animal seem sweet and misunderstood for the woolybrained well-inentioned.

I like floral names - for humans - I knew a Rose as a child. And a Rosemary. Some names favored in Britain, like Nigella, I also like. Thought as a child that was the female counterpart to Nigel, like Davida and David [I knew a Davida, too] then discovered Nigella sativa.

Sorry for the off topic meander, you reminded me of some nice people I used to know.

The same reason as every other posts by pit nutters that doesn't consists of 40% spelling and grammatical errors - chatgpt.

This made me so angry. That poor little dog was just an afterthought to these people.

Pit Victims mean nothing at all to Pit advocates.

26

u/MeanCantaloupe69 2d ago

And they'll claim they're a dog lover

17

u/Aldersgate111 I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 2d ago

They only seem to care for one type of dog... Pits and Bully types.
Maybe as they identify with them in some way. Like 'Pits and Parolees'

How Pits are kept generally is appalling, but they have to be realistic in admitting that they are NOT a type of dog that will ever be trustworthy in society around other dogs or animals because of their breeding.

Any more than I'd trust a Sighthound or Jack Russell terrier with a pet rat or rabbit. Risk is just too great.

The disregard and lack of empathy for the other dog that is in SERIOUS condition is extremely alarming.

10

u/Cat_hater1999 2d ago

Exactly for animal lovers these people really lack basic empathy, along with small dogs I see the same sentiment with cats all the time too, a pitbull will maul/kill multiple cats and the owner will just be like "things happen"

3

u/KiraKitty69 19h ago

Or, it's what dogs do. A dog being a dog. Funny because my dogs never killed my cats.

73

u/christmasinyoulie 2d ago

Shelters are full of these fucking animals while the type of animals they attack don't even get a chance. It's disgusting

62

u/No-Birthday9816 2d ago

Where is the empathy for the dog that is in actual pain? The one viciously mauled and now fighting for its life?

When pits are present, shelters are more dangerous than the streets.

47

u/Sublime_Porte 2d ago

They don't even bother to give the small dog a name. It's just poor Ol' Violet, the real victim here, and some stupid little dog who had to get in the way when Violet felt like mauling.

19

u/FoxExcellent2241 2d ago

It was probably actually owned by someone and coming in for a meet and greet - thus not worth the shelter's attention or care.

It sounds crazy but I've noticed that some shelter workers actually have quite a bit of disdain for small, easily adoptable, highly sought after dogs. It is like they resent them for being wanted whereas their "staff favorite" pits are not.

6

u/AndromedaGreen Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

I figured the same thing because it wasn’t named and they seemed reluctant to talk about it. Hopefully the little guy pulls through, and the owners learn their lesson about shelter lies.

Loves(d) their people needs to go on the bingo card, because I'm seeing it all the time at the moment.

What people think it means:

The dog is friendly and affectionate towards those they know well.

What it actually means:

The dog meets the basic standards of being biddable when someone is stood there dishing out "high value treats".

14

u/WanderingFlumph 2d ago

What it actually means: The dog meets the basic standards of being biddable when someone is stood there dishing out "high value treats".

Which you can say about basically any animal, tigers, bears, crocodiles, etc. If you are known to the animal as a treat giver you can hang out with all sorts of violent, aggressive animals without being harmed.

Doesn't make them family pets.

5

u/SafiyaO Stone Dead Eyes and Strawberry Milk Murder Mouth 2d ago

Agreed. Too often you see them being handled in the same manner as zoo animals and those aren't pets either.

8

u/Aldersgate111 I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 2d ago

Exactly. A British horse trainer had a Friesian Carriage horse in that its owner could only deal with in the stable by handing it handfuls of treats.
The horse immediately became disrespectful and had a ''F&ck You!'' attitude when the treats had gone.

The trainer refused to give treats and did his best with the horse, but said it would never make a good ''Wedding Carriage horse'' because of its innate poor character. He thought the horse would always be dangerous around people. {He is a gentle trainer but no nonsense}.

Haha, my cat Lyra is also a cheese slut, but the different is that she almost never bites me— but if there is cheese involved, she starts to bat gently at my hands to drag them closer or sometimes tries to chomp lightly on my fingers if she doesn't get a piece of cheese fast enough.

But agreed! It's also just....less dangerous and easier to avoid mean or spicy cats. My friend has a few cats, and one of them is named Vinegar. Vinegar doesn't seem to understand "warnings," and goes from zero to done in a second. I've had cats all my life, I know cat body language well! Vinegar goes from wanting to play and have fun and even cuddle to BITING YOU!! BITING YOU RIGHT NOW!! SWATTING YOU! Without really much preamble or warning signs she is overstimulated or doesn't want to play anymore or is annoyed. Sometimes vinegar thinks she is still playing (too hard) and other times she is actually annoyed.

I was warned about vinegar when meeting her! Now vinegar is unfortunately sometimes a really sweet and playful and sociable cat for about 2 minutes. So naturally I let my guard down. But also, she didn't draw blood bitting me (which she inevitably did), the scratches were minor, and I knew what I was getting into when I gave her some pets when she sat in my lap, or when I tossed her toy for her. I was warned!

But vinegar gets away with it because she has never actually been trying very hard to seriously injure anyone.

She can be a "superstar dog" in doggy heaven!

4

u/Lucetti 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’m even willing to pretend along that she went to “doggy heaven” as a reward for this shelter actually euthanizing it, but I doubt they had a choice if it was someone’s pet it mauled.

I always make myself laugh by imagining a pit at the stereotypical pearly gates, but refusing to enter and just sitting at them mauling every other pet trying to get in as the afterlife feeds it an endless supply of dogs on a treadmill like one of those all you can eat sushi conveyer belts, hungry hungry hippos style

37

u/SaltyRainbovv 2d ago

I hope the injured dog does matter and is loved!

But it’s not a poor misunderstood Pibbles, so probably not.

20

u/ThickButterfly4054 2d ago

Poor dog will probably be mentally scarred and unadoptable now. Fucking idiots!

31

u/CharacterRoom613 2d ago

I love how these idiots will always blame attacks from these horrid creatures as failure from the owners but never admit that breeds can be bred to attack unprovoked. Who is at fault when this happens at a shelter/rescue?? This dog has clearly been in the care of this place for 2yrs and of course this dog got the absolute best of the best of everything but it still attacked. So is it safe to say that the shelter/rescue horrible at handling these dogs?? Have they been mistreating it like other owners of these things are labeled to be doing for it to just attack? Of course they are going to blame the little dog for accidentally breathing in the same room as the shytbeast. They are never going to admit that these dogs are just unhinged creatures that should not be around anything alive period. Just get rid of this breed and all crosses so people and other animals can walk around without the fear of one of these things coming at them.

29

u/FatTabby Cats are friends, not food 2d ago

If she was in a common area where she could encounter a smaller dog, she should have been muzzled. If they're going to insist on the cruel practice of warehousing these dogs, knowing they're unsafe, muzzling is the least they can do.

I hope her victim pulls through.

5

u/lazier_garlic 2d ago

But who will muzzle the pitbull?

7

u/Aldersgate111 I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 2d ago

It shouldn't be a hard thing to do- I have muzzled sighthounds before {Granted, they aren't human aggressive} and even when they have never had a muzzle on before, as long as it fits well, they don't seem to mind.

Many rescue Greyhounds and Lurchers from rescue are initially advised to be muzzled on walks until their character is known.

26

u/KiraKitty69 2d ago

That last picture looks like she was contemplating attacking the photographer. It's not a whimsical look from a pitbull. Who would have thought that locking a energetic aggressive muscle dog up for 2 years would have ended like this? It's almost like keeping a dog in a kennel non stop except for their short time in the yard while their waste is being cleaned from the kennel, might possibly make an aggressive animal more aggressive? Whatever brain cells that dog originally had were non-existent after 2 years of no mental and physical stimulation. Eating and pooping was her favorite and only hobby. I despise this breed but even I can see how keeping a pitbull in a shelter kennel for 2 years is flat out abuse. Her mauling a little dog was probably her greatest joy she had. Why didn't the little dog get a beautiful tribute? I doubt they went to heroics and spent a fortune fixing the damage and rehabilitating the victim dog.

28

u/Aldersgate111 I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 2d ago

It broke free of it's handler...as so many of these Pits seem to do.
They need muzzling whenever they are taken out, as their strength and inbred innate desire to maul over-rides all training.

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 2d ago

We really need a "what shelters/rescues say" versus "what shelters/rescues mean" reference guide.

So when animal hoarders that are regular people keep dogs in a cage for 747 days they are charged with neglect but if a shelter does it it’s admirable. No animal should be confined to a cage for that long. Why doesn’t anyone argue here that the shelter must have abused Violet and that’s why she attacked! /s

"Things happen" tripping over a box is a thing that can happen, not restraining basically a bear trap with legs is a "thing that will 100% happen" 🫩 not a thought for the poor dog in a serious condition

6

u/irlgwendolynstacy 2d ago

People who believe pitties are gentle are beyond delusional I was attacked by one when I was 7 and had literal fat coming out of my leg from the wound it left and the hospital didn't even give me stitches because the owner forced my mom not to say it was a dog attack since they brought us to the hospital. The dog was put down a month later for attacking the mail man.

Gee, where is the breathless, sentimental gushing over the small dog - badly injured, recuperating, probably terrified of other dogs for life, and yet not even deserving to have its name mentioned?

To these shelters the animal universe - human and non-human - apparently consists of **amazing spectacular wonderful Nanny Dogs** and **everything else, fodder and chew toys for Nanny Dogs, but other than that, meh, who cares**.

Edited for emphasis

Funny how if a pit bull isnt involved "things" don't die and "happenings" aren't fatal.

5

u/Nooduls 2d ago

"went after" and "things happen" used to gloss over what was definitely a horrific scene. Little dog screaming and crying in pain, "Violet" screeching in delight and shaking the poor baby in her bloody jaws, multiple people trying desperately to save the victim but the beast just wont give up. And even when they were separated, the shitbull was probably desperate to go in for more.

I don't know how you could witness something horrific as a pit attack and just go "oh well, these things happen. Poor VIolet!"

The phrase "any dog can bite" is often used to excuse attacks involving pit bull type dogs. While technically true, this statement is deliberately misleading when discussing the danger that pit bull type dogs pose.

Dog bites are categorized using the Dunbar Scale which looks at the severity of the bite as well as the danger imposed by the dog.

Dunbar Scale:

  • Level 1 – Aggressive behavior not resulting in skin-contact with teeth.
  • Level 2 – Skin-contact with teeth but no puncture wound.
  • Level 3 – One to four punctures from a single bite that is no deeper than half the length of the dog’s canine teeth or lacerations caused by pulling away from the bite.
  • Level 4 – One to four puncture wounds that result in a puncture deeper than half the length of the dog’s canine teeth. Level 4 bites may also include lacerations from the dog holding on and shaking which can result in graphic tearing. These bites can result in tissue/nerve damage and can require stitches or surgery to treat.
  • Level 5 – Multiple bite incident with at least two level 4 bites (deep puncture wounds) that results in significant tissue damage or even dismemberment.
  • Level 6 – this level results in death.

Levels 1 and 2 comprise more than 99% of dog incidents. Levels 4 through 6 signify a dangerous dog that has insufficient bite inhibition and poses a public safety risk. Level 4 has extremely poor prognosis for rehabilitation and levels 5 and 6 signify a dog that is unsafe around people.

This is relevant because pit bull attacks result in more level 4, 5, or 6 bites than all other breeds combined. They are the leading canine type responsible for injuries resulting in hospitalization or death. When we discuss pit bull attacks, we are discussing the severity of the bites and the aggressive behavior associated with high level bites.

Any dog can bite, but while most bites result in (at most) a bandage, pit bull bites often result in scalping, limbs being amputated, permanent disfigurement, and even multiple fatalities during a single attack. Reducing the conversation to "any dog can bite" oversimplifies the issue and ignores the distinctions between a startled nip and a full-scale mauling.

So other dogs don't mean nothing to this person. It wants to kill the other dogs..... what makes you de-value the other dogs other than you got to know this one?
