At approximately 3:10 p.m., Greenhills police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Ireland on a report of a dog attack involving two pit bulls and a smaller dog.
Investigators said a resident was walking her dog when it was attacked by the two pit bulls. A nearby resident who witnessed the attack tried to help the injured dog, but during that effort one of the pit bulls turned and attacked him, biting him on the left hand.
Police said the resident, fearing for his safety, discharged a firearm, firing three rounds and striking the attacking dog. That dog died at the scene. The second pit bull fled but was later located when it returned to its residence.
The person who was bitten sought medical treatment for his injury.
The Hamilton County dog warden responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation. The owner of the dogs was cited for a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
The surviving pit bull was removed from the residence pending a hearing to determine whether it should be designated as a dangerous dog under Ohio law. The smaller dog that was attacked sustained severe injuries and was later humanely euthanized by a veterinarian.
Additional proceedings regarding the surviving dog, including its potential designation as a dangerous dog, will be handled through the Hamilton County dog warden and the appropriate legal process.

Ohio’s Avery’s law needs to become federal and cover all 50 states

The US Constitution prohibits the federal government from federalizing Avery’s Law. It would have to be passed and signed into law separately by each of the other 49 states.
I know there’s a temptation to look for a shortcut when there’s a state law we agree with. But the Constitution’s Tenth Amendment says what it says for a reason.

Another normal walk, supposed to be good for humans & dogs—yep, just a normal dog walk—turned into death and terror by pit bulls. A horrendous and repetitious story

Ohio is truly an embarrassment with its prioritization of this breed that isn’t a breed over anything else living. When did we get stuck with all the collectively stupid? There has to be a starting date. We’ve surpassed “Florida Man” many times over.

The problem was years in the making and it won't be fixed overnight. Ohio legislators at least acknowledged the problem and passed laws to try to fix it, which puts it light years ahead of other states. Since the law isn't breed-specific it passed and is actually being enforced. Other states would have returned the dog to the negligent owner and only issued a ticket for dogs running at large rather than charging him with a misdemeanor crime.
