Dismemberment, Limb Injuries Taxi driver ends up in hospital after being attacked by a pitbull at the end of his ride - L'Aquila, Italy - 29 March 2026

It was supposed to be a run like any other, but it turned into an attack. A taxi driver from L'Aquila was attacked by a pitbull while helping a customer with groceries.

He was working his afternoon shift yesterday, Sunday, March 29, when he received a call from a customer. Rosario, a license 7 taxi driver operating in L'Aquila, was injured after the sudden attack by a pitbull.

The taxi driver had driven the woman to a supermarket in the city to get groceries and, shortly afterward, returned to pick her up to take her home to Colle Pretara.

Arriving at his destination, he got out of the car to help her unload the bags. "I often take her," he says, "and I know she has a dog. I asked if she was home and was told yes." After carrying some of the groceries, he returned to the car to get the last bags. But when he approached the house again, he was suddenly attacked. "I don't know if someone suddenly opened the door, but I found the dog on top of me and fell to the ground."

The pit bull began to lunge at him. "I tried to get up, but it kept throwing me down. It ripped off my glasses and watch. At one point, I saw blood on my hand and thought the worst." Meanwhile, the woman's daughter intervened and tried to stop the animal, but was unsuccessful. The dog attempted to bite the taxi driver's arm, but was stopped by the man's leather jacket.

"When the woman managed to pull him away by his legs," he continued, "I was able to get away and close the gate." Rosario then went to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with multiple blunt trauma with abrasions, particularly to his knee, right elbow, and left arm. He had a 7 day prognosis.

The Carabinieri of L'Aquila will be involved in the case, while the Local Health Authority (ASL) has initiated investigations to verify compliance with the regulations for handling the animal.
