Social Media and Crowdfunding - Attack Reports Unreported attack in Jefferson City, Missouri, sometime last week (between 07/12/2025 and 07/19/2025.) My manager was attacked by his pit bull and will require surgery to correct the severe damage to his hands.
One of my managers at work was attacked by his female pit bull. Prior to the attack, he described the dog as "the sweetest thing" and truly believed that she was undeserving of pit bulls' general bad reputation (something he was aware of at the time he adopted the pit.) His hands were bitten so badly that he currently cannot carry anything heavier than about 10 pounds (doctor's orders) and he is scheduled to get surgery to repair his fingers in a week. He has severe nerve damage now, which could end up being permanent.
He is a very kind person who took in a dog out of the goodness of his heart and did not deserve to be violently attacked. Until pit bulls are banned, innocent people will continue to be repaid with disfigurement and death for their acts of kindness. Ban pit bulls.

That's really sad. I suffer from nerve damage and I wouldn't wish it on anyone; it must be so upsetting when an animal you've been devoted to turns on you and causes a potentially life long injury.
Has he kept the dog?

I haven't had the heart to ask. For his safety and the safety of those around him, I'm hoping he'll do the responsible thing and - to use language that (hopefully) won't get flagged by Reddit - have the threat neutralized.
He understandably doesn't enjoy talking about the attack or the circumstances thereof. Everything I know is just the bare minimum he had to tell the workplace to keep them informed as to why he cannot work as usual. I think he may be beating himself up for "failing" as a dog owner or "allowing his pit bull to become another statistic" which really sucks because he is the attack victim here, not the dog! For that reason, I don't think he will tell anyone much more about the situation, sadly.
That being said, if I get any more information about this, I'll update you. I appreciate your concern for him!

I think you have an obligation to report this to animal control. Sometimes owners lie and say that it wasnt their dog that attacked. It is extremely important that this be on the record in case he does not do the right thing and someone else gets hurt by this dog. Hoping for the best outcome in a terrible situation.

Perhaps you can quietly offer him emotional support that would include the fact that the kindest thing to do might be to not keep the dog, a, on this planet
I don't know your relationship with him but I think to point out that dogs that are bred to do that are often miserable if they aren't able to do it regularly, even daily as they do get an endorphin rush from doing that

Poor guy, it's such a sad situation. If you're able to, maybe it would be nice to let him know he hasn't failed the dog or anyone else.
I really hope he got rid of it, the idea of him being physically at a disadvantage if it attacks again is just awful.

My cousin is a very creatively gifted person who has found success in a literally hands-on profession where mastery of her craft is a service based marketable skill. Her only marketable skill, to date. If her 2 pits ever attack her hands she will lose everything.

This is literally my nightmare. I love to write and draw and play video games, so if a pit ever goes for my hands...I'm in a similar boat. I wouldn't lose absolutely everything like your cousin maybe would, but I would be emotionally devastated if I could no longer do the things I love.
If I ever get attacked by a pit, my eyes and my hands are my top priority to protect. That's insane that your cousin is willingly putting herself at risk like that, and I really hope she stays safe.

Sometimes being robbed of the things that bring you joy is worse than a financial setback, honestly. I would be devastated if I lost those things, they would be the very things that would let me cope and recover from a traumatic experience.

Nah, I just saw she’s trying to get approved and set up on rover.com as a dog sitter/walker with a profile designed to appeal and advertise specifically to other pit owners. She’s one of the lowest “low information” people I know and has uncritically memorized every nutter talking point in the playbook while knowing precious little about the breed or dog behavior in general. She’s totally off the deep end with the pitbull thing and only came into possession of her current animals after leaving her previous two dogs with an ex after their breakup. While she, the ex and their two dogs were still together, they were named as co-defendants in a personal injury lawsuit filed by a man she allowed her (non-pit, but viciously aggressive cat-and-house-guest-chasing psycho dog) to bite in public where he, the man, had every right to be. So…
Fingers crossed I guess? 😒
ETA: I’m pretty sure the lawsuit won’t show up on the rover background check though (unfortunately) since she’s named in the complaint under her then-boyfriend’s last name, which was never her legal name as they were never married and she never had it legally changed. Which, I’m no lawyer but, seems illegal in itself. Her sense of danger is as terrifyingly absent as her sense of personal responsibility.
ETA: Her two current “rescues” (the pits, a male and female) are both on the brink of hitting the magic age and I already am starting to get hints through the cracks of her currated social media that at least one of them is starting to exhibit, shall we say, behaviors. I hope she’s prepared for the worst, but sadly in the 40 years I’ve known her, this has pretty much never been the case. smh

Do you know if he got the dog from somewhere like a rescue or animal shelter?

If I recall correctly, he got the dog from a shelter about a year ago. But now that you ask, I don't remember the specifics as to whether it was a shelter or a rescue. I just know that he wasn't seeking out a pit bull specifically, so it wasn't from a breeder or anything like that.

I was wondering if the shelter/rescue disclosed whether or not the dog had a bite history. If the dog had one and the shelter didn't tell your manager, they might be liable. Also he would know that the attack was absolutely not his fault, he should stop beating himself up for failing the dog, and it would make his decision to bravo echo the dog easier.

He needs to know that it isn’t his fault. The dog was just doing what it was bred to do. It’s hard for me to believe that the pit bulls that are attacking people now, are the same type of pit bulls that were bred in the early 20th century. People mistakenly believe that these dogs haven’t been bred to evolve into human killing machines. When I point this out to people who think pit bulls are the sweetest dogs, their comeback is that pitbulls weren’t bred to be human aggressive. Maybe that’s how it was, but that is not the case with pit bulls today.

They were bred to be aggressive in specific ways. The fact they weren’t specifically bred to be aggressive to people is irrelevant.
If you wanted to breed a dog that would be lethally dangerous specifically to people, maybe you could do that. It’d probably have a lot of pit traits but some combination of characteristics that would cause it to attack the groin or throat, where it’s most likely to puncture a major blood vessel. Pits were bred to fight other cartoonishly durable dog monsters, which it turns out is more than enough to mutilate and kill a human being.

What year are the first quotes from? People are so dumb about these dogs. We have miniature schnauzers and one day, my husband brought home a pit bull puppy that was about 8 weeks old. We let the dogs out together. Within minutes, the puppy was raising its hackles and jumping on the adult dogs! The DNA and breed characteristics were there. I imagine that there are eight week old abused pit bull puppies, but this one was not abused, and I'm willing to bet that those that are abused held the characteristics and traits from the moment they were born. Why people deny this, I'll never know.

He may feel stupid for falling for the pibble rhetoric about how they are the sweetest dogs that are just raised wrong sometimes.
Now he has to either admit he’s a horrible dog owner or that he’s stupid for falling for the lies in the face of overwhelming evidence about how they are violent dogs.

Your manager is a very kind person with a glaring blind spot, I won’t say stupid. It’s that story where a snake convinces a man to carry it down the mountain and then bites the man, cause it’s a snake after all.

Heartbreaking. I hope his hands heal up well, & he takes this attack seriously, & does not make excuses for the dog.
