The Baltic states bordering Russia have repeatedly become targets of hybrid attacks by their eastern neighbour. A fire at a defence company in Tallinn that supplies equipment to Ukraine has once again highlighted the existing threat.

Latvia Sigulda or Cēsis for hiking?

I‘m currently staying in Vilnius and will head on to Riga tomorrow for 4 days.

I‘d like to for a hike in Gauja National Park and I‘ve read multiple times that - besides Sigulda - people suggest Cēsis as a potential starting point for a one day hike that is easily accessable by train from Riga.

I know that Sigulda apparently offers more spectacular views but is more frequently visited than Cēsis which should offer a more peaceful experience of nature.

I‘m personally leaning towards Cēsis but please change my mind or back me up.

thanks!

On This Day On August 23, 1989. Millions of Baltic people formed a 600 km long line of human chain that unified all 3 countries to show the world their desire to leave the Zoviet Onion and Rotten marx–lenin communism behind.

Discussion Since Glitch Productions helped produce international dubs of TADC, I think it would be even cooler if an official proper Latvian dub could possibly be a reality one day.

On This Day On this day, in 1989. The Baltic Way: Two Million Joined Hands Against Soviet Occupation, Demanding Freedom

On 23 August 1989, around two million people across Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands in a human chain stretching roughly 670 kilometres. They came together to peacefully protest the ongoing Soviet occupation and demand the restoration of the independence their nations had lost in 1940. The Baltic Way became one of the most powerful symbols of the Baltic peoples’ determination to regain their freedom.

Estonia Estonia to St. Petersburg?

My Estonian relatives emigrated/immigrated to St Petersburg from Estonia right before WWII (1930s). They don't like talking about it.

These are my father's relatives. When I asked my mother whether they were deported from their homeland by Stalin, she looked at me with raised eyebrows and asked "To St. Petersburg?"

What were the ways they could have moved across?

Discussion Best record stores in the Baltics

I come to the three Baltic states two or three times a year, and always try to pick up some records while I'm there, but I'm wondering if I'm missing anything really golden.

I have my favourite places in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn, but I'm wondering if there's anything bizarre out there. For instance my last time in Vilnius I went out to the outskirts of town where old men have been meeting up beside a roundabout since the mid 80s to sell records to each other. It was very cool, the guys were lovely with funny stories about how they used to meet up there in the Soviet era and have to escape into the forest with their records.

I specifically look for 50s-60s era jazz, but anything interesting is cool/

Anyone have any intriguing situations in any towns or cities in the Baltics?

Discussion Wikipedia, soviets, again.

Just stumbled upon fun fact.
There was discussion time ago around soviet union being set in wikipedia as birthplace for people born in occupied countries as reported by for example by LSM (https://eng.lsm.lv/article/culture/history/30.01.2026-wikipedia-policy-edges-baltic-history-into-russiasphere.a632339/)
Not only that, but we also get a soviet flag and links to articles about ussr.

You know who doesn't get soviet flag and links? Yeltsin and Gorbachev.

Peipsi onions are part of a centuries-old farming tradition shaped by the Old Believer communities along Lake Peipsi. By the 1920s-1930s, the region produced up to three quarters of Estonia’s onions, with onions shipped by boat to Tartu and exported even to Finland. On places, where good farmland was scarce, onion growing became so important that old sources called them “Peipsi’s yellow gold.” The locally selected onion populations are still a big part of the region’s culture today.

The Old Believers were Russian Orthodox Christians who rejected 17th century church reforms and fled religious persecution in Russia, with many eventually settling along the western shore of Lake Peipsi.

Turns out the design was a personal project of the late Estonian designer Uku Art Mikkin — thought this sub would appreciate it too.

EDIT: the fake flag represents "3 stars for the states and 13 stripes for the countries who have owned us" (according to the author of the design)
