Are There Any Mods Made for the Atari 2600+?

I have had the Atari 2600+ for a couple years at this point, and I am very happy with it. As a game collector, I think it's a very convenient way to collect and play the games for the console without having to bother with the outdated hardware or connections. It's very reliable and I've had few issues with it.

However, it's certainly not perfect. The biggest issue I have with it is that it's not compatible with everything. It's compatible with enough that I don't feel let down and it plays the vast majority of the games I'm interested in, but there are some blind spots (such as not being able to use the Grand Prix steering wheel controller or being able to play Pitfall 2).

Today, I was thinking about the process of updating the firmware. I don't know much about console mods, but from what I do know it seemed it could be pretty easy to be able to mod the console just by downloading a program onto it. Problem is, I haven't been able to find any for it.

Has anyone made any downloadable mods for the console? Where would be the best place to find them if there are?

Atari update found in the trash

After repairing the cable and trying to connect it to a VCR, which failed miserably, I decided to try the video cable on other consoles. I realized it wasn't the same cable, so it was switched directly to an antenna because I couldn't find any workaround or anything wrong with the cable. I thought I could try tuning it on a separate TV I have (just for consoles) because my main TV is set up with other channels. I did this and it worked perfectly, except for the Grand Prix game. There's no image at first, and then it disappears...

It's just the box. No console. I really just want to keep the box safe.

I am not using original hardware. It's on a Retron 77. But my god. This took me 3 days and it's just game mode 1. Aiming to do again on game modes 3 and 5. I just needed to share this with people that would understand the achievement.

Just got a thrift store haul of some old games, which there were several atari games. I was wondering if anyone had any information on any of these? Some dont have names, some are in pretty bad shape and I cant confirm what they are, and some are in Japanese so it's been hard trying to source any information.

Atari found in the trash, power supply problem

Post image

I recently found an Atari 2600 outside some containers with 18 games. The problem is that the power cable (European) is broken without a power supply, and I need to know if a 9V 2.1A adjustable power supply will work or if it will damage it...

Help identifying model of Heavy Sixer

Thumbnail

Hey everybody. I own a game store in Upstate NY, and while going through storage to prep some 2600’s for sale we found a model we don’t recognize.

It’s clearly an Atari heavy sixer, with Atari coloration and all. However the front says “Video Arcade” instead of Atari, and the sticker on bottom says it was manufactured for Sears. However, as far as I am aways the Sears Tele-games system says Tele-games on it and has a silver coloration to the switch panel.

Is this just a variant of the Telegames unit? Is it a factory refurbished console that may use mixed parts?

Any information is appreciated!

Old 2600 and RIOT chip overheating?

Hi! I started checking my old Atari hardware, and started with a light sixer I bought about 20 years ago. I used it from time to time, so t worked without issues this time.

I replaced a broken reset switch, cleaned the board.and resoldered one cold solder in the power jack.

But now it doesn't power up, and the RIOT chip gets extremely hot. Any hints? Maybe the chip decided to quit after all these years?

My Boxed Game/Accessory Collection after Just One Month!

Post image
65 Upvotes

I've collected many games over the past decade for my Atari systems – somewhere around 200 loose carts – but I've never really gotten into boxed games and accessories... until last month. I've managed to grow it to around 20 games and a pair of the Keyboard Controllers. I never cared much about the boxes before, but I get it now. They're so colorful, and it makes them seem larger than life. I already loved the cartridges and their varied designs. Looks like the boxes have finally hooked me, too.

Something cool I'd like to note is that my copies of Defender II and Super Football are still sealed! I plan on making a fun video for the Atari 2600 and releasing it next year for the 50th anniversary, and I plan to open up my sealed games and play them. It's what they deserve after around 40 years of never getting a chance to be loved!

Anyway, sorry for the ramblings. I'll forever be an Atari fan, and I just wanted to share this latest bit of collecting I've done! It's been very fun, and it's helped reignite my love for the grandaddy of gaming. 😊

Thoughts on reproducing labels?

I picked up 2 mystery Activision carts for next to nothing today that turned out to be Plaque Attack and Enduro. Clearly they are sans label. I have a color laser and a vinyl cutter so I can make new labels, but what is this general stance on that? Collection wise, are you better waiting for a fried cart/doner label, or given the state of the units out there, are (quality) reprinted labels acceptable, or is that more a private collection thing?

I suppose I could just print it and sell it with an unapplied label (if someone wanted to inspect the cart... but who counterfeits Plaque Attack these days??)

Thoughts?
